Chapter 5

Penulis: Maria Anita

I showed up at the company at 8:00 a.m. Mrs. Taylor gave me a warm welcome and introduced me to everyone, and they were all very kind. The boss wasn't there - he was traveling and would return at the end of the week. The office was beautiful, very modern, decorated in white with stainless steel and green accents, managing to be both professional and welcoming. It was elegant, and I really liked it. I was particularly glad I had chosen to wear a black suit with a dark green silk blouse underneath and black heels. I would need to dress elegantly every day now, after all, I would be working directly with the company president.

Mid-morning, I received a message from Mel saying she had managed to schedule an appointment with the director of the daycare near our apartment during lunch hour. I explained the situation to Mrs. Taylor and asked if it would be possible to leave during that time, assuring her I would be back on schedule.

"So you have a child. How old is he?" she asked with a smile.

"He's two years old. He's a very clever little boy. He wasn't planned, but he's the reason for my life!"

"What's his name?"

"Peter."

"Peter. A strong name. You're not married, I know that, but what about your son's father, are you still together?" My heart sank - how could I explain to her that I didn't know who the father was? But I don't lie, so let's face the truth. I told her that Peter's father was someone I met at a party and never saw again. She looked at me seriously, but there was no judgment in her eyes. Then she said:

"You have my respect, Catherine. It's not easy being a single mother, and it's very difficult to tell truths like this when you know they might trigger others' judgment. Thank you for your trust and honesty. Go take care of the daycare arrangements for your son, we'll continue this afternoon - no need to rush."

I thanked her and said goodbye, heading off to meet Mel and Peter. My admiration and respect for Mrs. Taylor only grew. She's a woman in her mid-fifties, with very light blonde hair and almost transparent blue eyes. She's a beautiful and elegant woman, but most importantly, she's very welcoming. We got along very well. During the rest of the morning, she filled me in with information about the work, and I took notes on everything. At lunchtime, I left the building, and Mel was already waiting at the door with Peter. I got in the car, and we went to lunch before heading to the daycare.

Mel and I loved the daycare, and Peter was already fitting in, running around with his new little friends - he's such an outgoing boy. That made me so happy! My son was happy! We decided not to look at other daycares since this one was excellent and very close to home, just three blocks away. We completed the enrollment and sorted out all the details. The director suggested we let Peter stay until the end of the day since he was having fun and could start adapting. Mel agreed to pick him up at the end of the day.

Mel dropped me back at the company and told me she'd head home to prepare for her job interview later in the afternoon. I returned to my office, arriving before Mrs. Taylor. I sat at the desk and started reviewing everything she had already told me. The phone on the desk rang, and I wasn't sure what to do, but since this would be my desk, I answered in my most professional voice:

"Miller Group, Executive Office, good afternoon, how may I help you?"

I heard a deathly silence on the other end followed by a long sigh. Someone spoke up with obvious impatience, in a strong and slightly hoarse voice:

"Put Mariana on."

I was startled but kept my composure and replied:

"I'm sorry, sir, but Mrs. Taylor hasn't returned from lunch yet. May I help you, or would you like to leave a message?"

"Who is this speaking," he asked, even more impatiently.

"My name is Catherine, I'm Mr. Miller's new executive assistant."

"But I don't know you," he seemed to grow more impatient with each word.

"It's my first day here, sir. Would you like to leave a message?"

"Tell Mariana to call me as soon as she sets foot in the office."

"Certainly, sir. And your name is?"

"Looks like I'm your boss!" He snapped and hung up.

Wow, what a stressed-out man! This wasn't in the job description. My throat immediately tightened. Had I already made a bad impression on my boss? I was so screwed! I started thinking I wouldn't last long in this job. Shortly after, Mrs. Taylor arrived and I passed on the message with a worried look on my face. She looked at me with a smile, as if understanding my concern, and asked:

"Was he calm?"

I looked at her and couldn't help myself:

"He was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I'm pretty sure I could see his jugular vein popping out of his neck."

She burst out laughing and then said:

"You two are going to get along great! You'll tame the beast, I'm sure of it."

I wasn't so sure about that. Maybe I shouldn't even unpack my bags, this man was going to eat me alive!

  • Irresistible Boss: Succumbing to Your Touch   S3-Chapter 105

Lexie’s POVI was anxious about my first day at work. Being Patrick's assistant didn't excite me, as I knew he would fire me at the first opportunity - he only tolerated me because of my brother. But I was eager to see him again; it had been so long since I last saw him when I was nothing more than a teenager. I spent the whole night thinking about it."Lexie!" I heard my brother calling. "Are you daydreaming?""Sorry, just a bit distracted. What did you say?" I really hadn't heard anything he had said."That I'm driving you both there and back, and don't even bother complaining." Flavian was like a father giving orders to his teenage daughter; it was almost funny."Oh, whatever..." I replied, drifting back into my thoughts, barely noticing time passing as we automatically made our way to the office."Lexie, you're distracted today. Is everything okay?" Manu put her hand on my shoulder and examined me at the company elevator door."Must be because you and my brother won't let me sleep,

  • Irresistible Boss: Succumbing to Your Touch   S3-Chapter 104

Manuela’s POVAfter Sabrina's visit to my classroom, I felt unsettled. I was almost certain that Flavian would hide from me that she had sought him out. But then doubt crept in - did she actually seek him out? And just like that! I was being eaten up by doubts. What seemed like a pointless little visit from Sabrina had become a monster in my head. And the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like the clock hands weren't moving at all. When class finally ended, I was practically already standing. I rushed out of the classroom and found PH and Lexie walking down the hallway."Manu, you should have waited for us inside the classroom," PH complained about my not waiting."I know, I know, but I'm tired, I just want to go home," I tried to hide my impatience."Tired? Yeah, you must be tired, you and my brother barely sleep and don't let me sleep either. The walls in that apartment are pretty thin, you know?!" Lexie laughed, making a suggestive comment about my activities with my boyfr

Flavian’s POVPatrick called asking if I had time to grab a drink with him. I found my friend unusually serious, which was odd since Patrick was typically a laid-back, playful guy. Something seemed wrong. Either way, it would be good to hang out with him for a while. We agreed to meet after work at a bar, and when I arrived, he was already there."Hey, detective," Patrick greeted me seriously, which already had me worried."What's up, man? What happened?" I asked right away."Ah, Flavian, I don't even know what happened," Patrick sighed."What do you mean?" I ordered a drink and waited for my friend to speak."Something's wrong with Virginia." So that was it. Even I had noticed that Virginia had been acting strange lately, as if she were somewhat disconnected from the group."Patrick, I noticed she's been avoiding the girls, always busy with something, but I didn't think you two were having problems." I looked carefully at my friend, and I knew that expression on his face - I had seen

Manuela’s POVLexie left Rick's office with a weak smile on her face, and I knew it was because she and Patrick did not get along well."Little Key, let's take Lexie for coffee. I thought this woman would be jumping for joy with the job..." Rick came out laughing behind her."I am happy, Rick, but I'm worried." Lexie remained quiet until we reached the break room, but she really didn't seem like someone who had just landed an excellent job."Well, don't worry. You and Patrick haven't seen each other in a long time, he's changed and become a better person, I guarantee you. And if he's a jerk to you, just tell me and I'll kick his butt." Rick served us coffee and pastries."Rick, how was your trip?" I remembered he went to see Tess at her parents' house to resolve their situation. He didn't want the divorce, but judging by his expression, I guessed he hadn't been successful in convincing his wife."She wouldn't talk to me. She simply hid and had her father send me away." Rick sighed. "It

Flavian’s POVMy sister called to tell me she would be working as Patrick's assistant. I thought that was great since I knew Patrick would be kind to her. She also said she would take Manu to college since she was at the office. The two of them were getting along really well, which made me happy. After all, Lexie needed a friend, and so did Manu, especially now that things in the group were different.Catherine was busy with her five children running around everywhere, and Sam was occupied with the baby. Tess had left, and Virginia never had time, so the girls were hardly meeting anymore. Only Melissa would regularly stop by the apartment to see Manu, but she was on vacation traveling with Fred.During this time, Rick had grown quite close to Manu. He had been missing his wife, who had left a long time ago, but nobody knew what their situation was, though I suspected Manu did.The ringing phone pulled me from my thoughts about the group. It was Cam, Manu's brother. He was supposed to l

  • Irresistible Boss: Succumbing to Your Touch   S3-Chapter 100

Lexie’s POVIt had been three days since I sent my resume to Rick, and I hadn't received any response. Maybe it was time to try an employment agency and see if I could find something. Manu was super sweet and let me borrow her car since Flavian had been driving her everywhere due to the drama with her mother, so getting around would be much easier.I printed some resumes, researched a few employment agencies online, got myself ready, and went out to face the battle, as they say. I had a plan and I would make it happen. I would get a job, have my own apartment, and my parents would never force me to do anything I didn't want to do ever again. It couldn't be that hard. But I was wrong. At the first employment agency, I had an interview and took one of those annoying psychological tests, and in the end, they said they would contact me if something matching my profile came up, but it would be difficult. This habit that HR people have of treating us like some profile they define who knows h

Rita’s POVThe day was scorching hot and I returned from church exhausted, desperately needing a shower and a cold drink. It was tiring to play the role of an abandoned wife and having to accept all the advice and laments about my ungrateful husband who had left home. Truth be told, when I arrived and realized Orlando had moved out, I was quite pleased - I was already tired of him, but I needed to maintain my role as the loving abandoned wife."Cida! Cida!" I called for the maid, but she was such a dimwit, always taking forever to show up."Yes, ma'am?" Cida appeared, drying her hands on her apron."Where's Julian?""Sleeping, ma'am.""Bring me something cold to drink, I'm burning up." The maid left the room and returned with a tray holding the refreshment. She was looking at me suspiciously. "What is it, Cida?""Ma'am, Cam was here earlier.""What did that good-for-nothing come to do at my house? Did you let him in, you useless thing?" I had already forbidden that insufferable man fro

Cam’s POVAfter visiting my sister, I kept thinking about how to get Rita's sample for the DNA test. Flavian had explained the ways to get it, either through a strand of hair or a glass she had used. So I kept wondering how to obtain it.I came to the conclusion that the best approach would be to enter the lion's den. I woke up early and went to Rita's house at the time I knew she would be at church. I never understood why she spent so much time at church when she was such a terrible person. Perhaps she just wanted to maintain her facade of being a good person for the rest of the town."Cam, good morning." The maid received me and found my presence strange. After I left this house, the few times I came back were because of Manu, who thankfully wasn't here anymore."Hi, Cida, is your boss home? I need to talk to her.""She went to church. And young Julian is sleeping.""Of course he is, that good-for-nothing. I'll wait for Rita, I need to speak with her." I said as I walked in and sat d

  • Irresistible Boss: Succumbing to Your Touch   S3-Chapter 97

Manuela’s POVI left college with PH by my side - he really hadn't left me alone for a moment. When we got outside, Flavian was already waiting for me beside his car."Hey, little one! I missed you." He pulled me into a hug. "Good evening, Peter Hank.""Good evening, detective." PH replied somewhat awkwardly."Man, just call me Flavian. Sorry about that day, but I think you can understand why." Flavian was apologizing to my friend for how rudely he had treated him when they first met, and I found that sweet."Don't worry about it, Flavian, I understand. And you're right to be jealous - Manu is truly beautiful and very special." PH smiled at me. "Manu, I'll wait for you here at the entrance tomorrow." We said goodbye to my friend and got in the car."Little one, what happened?" Flavian asked as soon as he started the car."Calvin showed up here." I said, still processing that visit."Who?" Flavian looked confused."Calvin, the father of the fiancé my mother arranged for me." I explained
