Mila’s POV The creepy guy I met at the cemetery, who gave me the chills was the one who saved my life. I didn't know if I was meant to be grateful or wary of him. I turned to Jett who had a hard time standing up, “Did you have to do that?” I asked, my voice stern and unyielding as I stared at him. If he didn't steal from the bastard, we wouldn't have had to experience this kind of embarrassment. “I'm sorry.” Jett lowered his head, not daring to look at me in the eye. I sighed, “Thank God you're okay, but you still need to be treated.” I frowned, a strange feeling in my heart. Presently, I didn't have a dime in my account, and the money for Jett’s hospital bills would take ages for me to get. Currently, we have no shelter on our heads and no food to put on our table. We sleep outside shops and battle with the cold at night. Sometimes, it becomes so unbearable that I feel like breaking down. I mean, sleeping outside for several weeks wasn't something a weak person would be able to handle. I sighed inwardly, not knowing how Jett would get treated. Perhaps taking him to the hospital would be the best option. He would only stay there a bit longer while I gathered up the money for the bills. Getting up, I covered up myself and tried to help Jett up. “Let me.” the mysterious man said as he walked closer, helping Jett up with just an arm. He had raven black hair, a perfect build, and the most beautiful set of eyes. I shook my head and turned away. Even if he looked better than all the men, I wasn't going to have my heart swayed by him. “You need to take him to the hospital.” I heard him say after a while, and I smiled, “Yes, I'll take him to the hospital. Thank..” “My car is over there. I'll help you guys there.” he cut me off, getting me suspicious. He was a stranger, someone I didn't know from anywhere. Why was he helping me if he didn't want something in return? Wanting to refuse, I parted my lips to utter a word, “You don't have to. You've badly injured yourself,” he said, not wanting me to say a word. I frowned, “Don't have to do what?” I asked curiously. The man chuckled, “You don't have to repay me. Not yet.” he smirked as he helped Jett into his car, and my car was the limited edition of Bugatti. The inside was well-furnished, and the design was insane. I gawked at the car, wondering when last I had touched something so expensive. Ever since the unfortunate event of my mother's death, I didn't give my father a chance. Since he chose his new wife over his children, I left his home in search of a better life. My siblings followed suit, as they couldn't allow my mum’s sister to be their stepmother. Moments later, we arrived at the hospital and Jett was being treated. Sitting calmly on a bench, the young man turned to look at me, “Don't you think you have to get treated too?” he smiled, making me widen my eyes in surprise. More treatment means more money. “I'm fine, it doesn't hurt,” I explained, not wanting to be put in even more debt. What if he wasn't planning to pay Jett’s hospital bills? “If you say so,” he said curtly as he adjusted himself on the chair. “What happened back there? Did your lover steal from him?” he asked, curiosity written all over his face, but did he just call Jett my lover? I then realized that the bald man had referred to Jett as my lover too. Were they blind? Didn't they see that he looked younger than me? “He's my little brother,” I explained, and at the same time, he smiled brightly just like a huge weight had been lifted off his chest. “I see.” he said shortly, “Then he stole from him?” I averted my gaze and played with the hem of my dress, embarrassed to say my brother stole some money from a shopkeeper. He seemed to have sensed my worry, “You don't have to feel that way. Your brother must have been driven to the edge. I'm glad I stepped in quickly.” he comforted, making my eyes sting with tears. Well, maybe he was. I couldn't remember the last time I had a reasonable meal. Most times, we don't eat for a whole day and search for work only to get scammed. Life had been really tough and draining, and I badly felt like falling to the ground to let out a heart-wrenching cry. To tear my heart out. “Thank you,” I whispered, controlling the urge not to cry. “What's your story? I can help you.” he said after a while, making me frown in confusion. “He..help me?” I stuttered and he nodded. “Yes.” “I'll get you and your sibling out of this predicament, give you a place to stay, and give you food to eat.” “How did you….” “Your appearance says it all, and the bald man also mentioned it.” he simply said, and I lowered my head to look at my palms, which had dirty patches on them. My clothes were torn and my hair would probably look like a bird's nest. He must have mocked me inwardly for looking like a wretched loser, but maybe I was. After all, I watched my little brother get beaten right in front of me. But he was going to help me? Help my siblings with everything they need? Provide food on our table and give us a place to stay. It looked too good to be true. I believed in angels, but then, I couldn't just trust anyone. Anyone willing to help would want something in return, and I knew the mysterious man wanted something, but what? “Why are you helping us?” I asked, confused by his actions. I knew he was rich, but he was still someone I'd never heard of. “I'm helping you because I want to, but then, I want something in return,” he said coldly, turning his head to meet my gaze. I frowned. Presently, I was a homeless girl with nothing to call her own. What could he possibly want? There was nothing on me. Nothing that would satisfy someone of his status. “Sign a contract with me, and pretend to be my fiance for four months. ” What?A DANCE OF SHADOWThree days and the world still hadn't shut up. Selene Monroe's face has shown everywhere magazine covers, talk shows, those relentless trending hashtags. Everyone and their mother had a theory. Pregnant? Plotting some corporate coup? Had Cassian finally met his match? The media couldn't make up its mind was she the luckiest Cinderella in Manhattan, or a femme fatale gunning for the throne?Honestly, Selene wasn't sure what box she fit in either. She was curled up in this massive leather chair in the penthouse library, a room she’d basically been scared to even look at until today. The whole place looked like something out of a billionaire’s Pinterest board dark wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, books lined up in perfect military rows. Too perfect. Like, who actually reads these? But at least it was quiet. No stage lights, no prying eyes. She nursed a mug of chamomile, still in her silk robe navy, because apparently that’s what power looks like at 9 a.m. Her phone buzze
Paths crossMila’s POV “What do I do now?” I asked myself as I tried to come up with a plan to tackle all these matters arising. I wasn't sure if Dolph had backed down completely or if he was planning something new.Secondly, I didn't know who this text was from. The only thing I had gotten straight was reuniting with my siblings. Outside that, I still had countless unanswered questions roaming in my mind. I dragged myself out of bed and headed for the shower. I needed a hot bath; maybe it could clear up the fog in my mind. The moment the steaming hot water touched my body, it brought a feeling of warmth and temporary relief to the aching thoughts that lay heavy in my mind.A few minutes later, I finished my refreshing shower and decided to do my hair. Sitting in front of the mirror, I saw the reflection of a broken soul, the unending cries for fulfillment and a better life. I sat there staring at my reflection, lost deeply in thoughts. But before I could pull myself out of such t
Evil mastermind. Hedda's POV“Mila doesn't belong in this world of fame and power,” I said as I sipped my glass of wine. This world of elegance, power, and fame was all mine. And I can't let anybody take this world away from me. Including that riffraff, Mila. As I scrolled through my phone, I felt immense satisfaction flow through me. “Mila Thomas stepped down from a lead role, due to a controversy swirl” the headlines read boldly on every blog on social media. The managers were so gullible, how easy it was to change their perception of Mila. And make them take such merciless actions towards her. I couldn't believe how fast she had risen to the ranks like she was some kind of movie star. It was irritating to even think about. “Pathetic!” I yelled, setting my phone aside. Mila was nothing but a stray that Jayden picked up and polished. Throwing her into the spotlight was not enough to hide her inferiority. Seeing her backing in Jayden attention was a slap on my face that I ref
Revealing secrets. Mila's POV After what felt like an eternity, my stomach reminded me with an aggressive growl that I hadn't eaten anything since that day. I needed to downstairs and eat something. The strength to leave my room came, making me drag my feet down the stairs. The moment I got downstairs, I was greeted by the smell of melted cheese and tomato paste. I scanned the kitchen and saw my siblings, Lila and Jett, with a half-empty box of pizza before them. Jett had a slice midair as I caught him about to stuff his face. “Hey Mila,” Lila said as she looked up. She was surprised to see me. She stared at my puffy eyes and tired expression. “Hey,” I said softly like I was normal, and I didn't cry myself to sleep. Jett turned to me with his mouth full of food. “Hey, do you want some pizza?” He offered, mumbling his words with a full mouth. I gave a small giggle, laughing at his innocence felt good even for a brief moment. “Sure,” I said with a small smile, as I sat close
Unfinished businessJayden’s POV“Jayden? Are you still there?” Mila’s voice cut through the hallway. I froze for a moment, my fist clenched tightly by my side.As I made my way down the hall, I realized that the past, which I had been trying to bury, was starting to come back to my present. Mila’s voice echoed in my head with the name I had tried not to think about for a long time. Hedda. With anger and fury, I stormed into my study room, slamming the door behind me. The room was a bit dark with only a desk lamp providing a dim illumination around the desk. I placed my hand on the desk, leaning into it and squeezing the edge tightly until my knuckles turned White.I repeatedly echoed Hedda’s name under my breath. Her name left a bitter taste in my mouth. One that I thought I would never imagine. My mind rests with numerous questions. Why now I asked myself. Hedda had never taken defeat, not in business or love; she had a way of gripping onto people's vulnerabilities until she got wha
More tears.Mila’s POV“No, I won't cry! Not in front of anyone” I yelled at myself as I slammed the front door of the mansion behind me, dashing to my upstairs to my room in a sprint. I need to be alone.“Hey Mila, you are back?” Lila’s voice floated from the other end of the living room, full of warmth and happiness.Without saying a word, entirely ignoring her, I bolted up the stairs. “Hey Mila, what's wrong?” She called out for the second time. I could feel the worry in her voice pulling at me, but I didn't stop.Jett appeared from a corner in the hallway, his face lighting up with a smile as soon as he saw me. But immediately he read the expression on my face, his smile faded into worry and fear. “Mila, are you okay?” He asked with a small voice filled with worry and anxiety.Despite his innocent plea, I didn't stop; I ignored him, too. I kept on walking to my room. I couldn't allow them to see the tears that were threatening to spill over. They were too young to share in my pain
