ALEXA’S POV

"Alexa, you need to get married."

"What? Why?" I exclaimed.

"The past is going to reoccur. This time, it’ll be more toxic. You can’t handle it alone — you’ll need someone by your side. Besides, I’m getting old enough."

"What the heck are you talking about? You’re speaking in parables, and I’m freaked out. What past? I want to know who these people are!" I demanded.

"No!" she snapped.

"Then why this all of a sudden?"

"Alexa, I won’t be at rest if you don’t fulfil my wish."

"Oh… don’t say that, Mom. Nothing’s going to happen to you. I’ll be fine without a husband."

"Alexa," she said softly, "this is my wish, and I want you to do it for my sake. You’re more than old enough to get married, so please — fulfil my very wish."

"Mom… why do you so desperately want me to get married? Is there something I need to know?"

“Alexa, you have to get married to Jason,” my mom said.“Why?!” I exclaimed loudly.“Something’s up, and you really need to get married to him.”“Is it because of the people after my inheritance and our companies, Mom? I’ll be okay. I can protect myself—my brothers are there for me too. I don’t need to get married to that jerk,” I said, frowning.“You’ll have to endure that jerk’s attitude. I know you’re calling him a jerk, but he seems like a good guy. I saw his affection for you that day—at the party.”“Mom, that was just pretense!” I blurted out before realizing what I’d said.“What?” she exclaimed.I froze. It took me a few seconds to process what had just come out of my mouth.“What do you mean?” she pressed again.“Mom, the affection was pretense. We both agreed to deceive you and his mom. We wanted you to think we were in a serious relationship, which we obviously aren’t. It was just for the meantime—until we figured out how to break it off.”“I can’t believe you, Alexa. You we

She’s lovely,” Mr. Anderson said with a smile. It had been over a week since the party, and Mr. Anderson hadn’t stopped talking about Alexa.“Don’t you think they’re a perfect match?” Mrs. Anderson asked, staring at a picture of the two of them taken by the press.“Of course, they are, Suzan.”“I’ll speak to Jessica,” Mrs. Anderson said softly.✦ ✦ ✦“It’s a pity I couldn’t see Suzan and Jessica,” Mrs. Stones said sarcastically to herself.Sydney came down the stairs, looking stern as usual.“How was your night, dear?” her mother asked.“Mom, I’m moving out. Finally,” Sydney replied immediately, a scowl on her face.“Why? Are you not comfortable here?” Mrs. Stones asked.“Exactly. I’m uncomfortable. I’ve done as you wished all these years by staying here with you—enduring your annoying behavior. It’s high time I lived on my own. ALEXA'S POV“So you’re trying to tell me that you know each other?” Jason asked, confusion flickering across his face.“Yes,” my mom and his mom chorused.“Yeah,” Austin and Jennifer said, stealing glances at each other.“How?” I asked curiously.“Well… when I was back in university, I had two friends, Katey and Susan. We were best of friends, always seen together all the time. But we were separated because of a certain issue, and we lost contact since then,” Mrs. Leonard said.“That kind of explains better… So, Jennifer?” I turned my gaze to her.“Um… well, well…” Jennifer stammered nervously.“I and Jennifer were once in a relationship,” Austin said.“When?... where?” I asked anxiously.“England. Remember I once travelled to England for some things?” Austin replied.“But Jennifer happened to be in Germany,” Jason cut in immediately.“Erm… I travelled to England with my friends for some months. • ENTANGLED MARRIAGE    CHAPTER FIVE: GETTING MARRIED AT ALL COST

I got dressed and drove to the restaurant where Jason and I had planned to meet. A part of me was still curious about what my mom had wanted to tell me earlier, but she clearly wasn’t ready to open up. When I entered the restaurant, I didn’t see Jason anywhere. I scanned the room, feeling slightly uneasy, before finally taking a seat. Just as I picked up my phone to call him, the door opened. There he was — Jason — looking as handsome as ever. I caught myself staring dreamily before quickly regaining composure. “Hi, Miss Alexa,” he greeted with a small smile. “I’m sorry for keeping you waiting. I had a meeting to attend.” “It’s fine,” I replied. “I only just got here myself.” He called for a waiter and ordered some food, his calm confidence filling the air between us. “You look stunning,” he said, his gaze soft yet unreadable.
