"Jake, Watch the door for our guest!" I yelled from my room.
I heard the platter of feet as my son rushed to the window. He seemed happier for the past week. He smiled more often and was more cheerful. I was finally glad to see that he wasn't so keen to bring up the conversation about his father again, I was not ready to tell my five-year-old son that his father was a thug who had us kicked out before he was born.Thinking of Arthur still made my heart ache, even after all this time. I often caught myself comparing each man that approached me with my ex, after a lot of pressuring, I had finally agreed to see Joe on a date.Joe was a good guy. He was good with Jake, but he wasn't Arthur. I sighed and carefully applied my light makeup. We were having Joe over for dinner and he should be here anytime soon."Joe is here!" I heard Jake's tiny voice call from the sitting room, and soon enough I heard the sound of a car driving into our driveway.I looked at myself in the mirror before walking to the door. I opened it to see Joe standing there holding a bouquet of red roses."Hello Olivia," He said in a smooth voice."Come in," I said, stepping aside to let him in. He leaned in to kiss my cheek before handing me the flowers."You look pretty," He said. "Hey, Champ!" He crouched beside Jake as I went to dip the flowers in a game of water.I stood at the kitchen counter and watched the both of them. Jake had not completely taken to Joe, he was still a little reserved, but Joe was determined and I'm sure that with a little time, they would be best buddies – If we got married.I almost choked.Where had that thought come from?I had not even gotten intimate with Joe yet. Nothing more than a peck on the cheek."This little man's hungry, Olivia," Joe said, standing up."Oh yeah," I snapped out of my little trance. "Come and have a seat. Let's eat."I was a professional chef, the meal was delicious and the air around the table was lighthearted. I could tell that Joe was taken by Jake, I watched silently as they chatted. Jake was talking about his school and to my delight, he spoke about his school friends. So what was holding me back from taking things seriously with Joe?That was a question that constantly hung in my mind. And the truth was that; I didn't have any answer.I sighed and stood up to clear the table. Joe and Jake kept on talking in the background."Okay, time for bed," I said when I saw Jake give a big yawn."Help yourself to a drink, Joe," I said as I led my son to his room. He nodded at me.After putting Jake to sleep, I delayed a bit longer in his room for no reason. Knowing I could not put it off any longer, I went back to the sitting room.Joe was relaxed on the couch with a can of beer in his hand. "I can't believe you got these," He said to me, holding up the beer.I chuckled. "You said you liked them." I poured myself a glass of soda and sat down beside him."Olivia," He took my hand. His hand was cold from holding the cold can. "You make efforts on little things like this," he said in a soft tone. "But I don't know why you don't want us to go all the way.""I'm not ready yet," I mumbled."I know, I know," He said. "It's just…""Give me a little more time, please?" I interrupted."Okay, okay," He sighed.I knew that was a lie, but how could I tell him that my heart already belonged to another?I need one of those cold beers to ease my throbbing headache.JOE LEFT THE house early the next morning, we had both slept together on the couch. Fully clothes.I heard him stretch and crack his back after he stood up. He leaned in to kiss my forehead, before leaving. After I heard his car start and drive away, I sat up and rubbed my temples.I should get serious with Joe. I really should. Good men like him are scarce to come by.I went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash up before I prepared for the day.I ONCE READ somewhere that a morning walk was good for both your physical and mental health. So I parked my Subaru a block away and decided to walk Jake to school. He could use the exercise, he looked like he was about bursting with unused energy."Why are we stopping here, mummy?" He asked from his car seat."Because I want us to walk," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt and stepping out.I released him and locked the door. The morning sun was bright but felt cool against my skin."Come," I took his hand and we started towards his school.I was still thinking of what to do next about my relationship with Joe. It had been bothering me since I woke up, suddenly, I felt Jake's hand stiffen and he slipped out of my grasp and ran ahead."MARCUS!!"I felt my blood run cold as my son yelled out the name. A dreadful pool settled in my lower belly. What are the odds that my son finds his father in the millions of people in the city?Almost impossible, right? But when I looked up at who Jake was running to, I recognized the blonde hair even before the man turned.I watched in horrific slow motion as he turned, his blue bright eyes lightened in a laugh as he caught my son and lifted him high into the air before dropping him down."Hey, buddy!" The breeze carried his deep voice over to me. I didn't hear what Jake said in reply but Arthur threw his head back and gave a hearty laugh.I noted vaguely that I was rooted in a spot. His gaze rose and traced me from my legs up to my face. I saw his face widen in what might be shock or surprise. Maybe both."Olivia?" He asked.I cleared my throat. "I see you've met my son, Jake. Everyone calls him Jake.""Yes, I have met him. Last week," Marcus said."Mummy, you know him?" Jake pulled my attention back to him.I nodded. "Yes baby, I do. From a long time ago." I looked into Marcus's face and apart from the colour of the eyes, I wasn't sure I recognized the man staring back at me. There was no warmth in the deep blue eyes."So he can come to have dinner with us tonight?" Jake piped."What? No. I'm sure Arthur has other things to do tonight." I looked at him.A smug smile hung around Arthur's lips and he said, "On the contrary, I am very free this evening."I looked from the smug smile to my son's pleading eyes and groaned silently. "Okay, dinner tonight." I gripped Jake's hand and walked away, taking deep breath to calm my nerves.Marcus stood in the middle of the road. He watched Olivia walk away with the little boy beside her. Watching the gentle sway of her hips, he felt the blood rushing into his cock which started to swell and throb. He ran his hands through his hair. This was just too much to be a coincidence. First, being drawn to a kid who turns out to be Olivia's child. He remembered that Jake had said he didn't have a father, he was going to ask Olivia about it. He sat on a bench by the side of the street and prepared to wait. After years of training, he knew he was in considerable danger, seated on the street alone without any bodyguard and only a brass knuckle in his pocket, a pistol strapped to his belt, and a Rambo knife taped to his ankle. He put his hand into the pocket and wrapped his fist around the knuckle weapon. He sat in full alert mode. He should not even be out here this morning. His phone rang. Following his father's rule, he had two phones. A small untraceable phone that he u
MARCUS GOT INTO his Ferrari SF90 and sped out of the Salvatore Mansion. The meeting was taking place on a neutral ground. Even though Marcus was married to their daughter, the three-headed dragon did not bother to pretend that they were friends with the Salvatore famiglia. There was no love shared between the two families. The marriage between Marcus and Melissa only stopped the killing between them and made them desperate allies, it did not make them friends. The Salvatore family would not agree to a meeting in Dragon land, and the three-headed dragon would not agree to a meeting on Salvatore land. A meeting such as that would be extremely volatile and would even be perceived as a threat. Marcus spotted the entourage of cars and he knew that he was at the right place. Where Mafia bosses gathered, there was sure to be some extravagant show of wealth. Marcus parked illegally – who cared? – and got out of the car. He buttoned up his designer suit jacket, the fact that he dealt with
MARCUS SCREECHED TO a stop in front of the main mansion. "This is your stop," He said. Julian nodded. "We should be getting word from the Murphys soon.""I will be expecting it," Marcus said. "You are acting on impulse, Marcus," Julian said.Mafxus chuckled. "Get out of my car, Julian… or I drive you to my house and you suffer a breakfast with my wife." Julian laughed and got out. "Son of a bitch!" "I thought so," Marcus laughed and zoomed off. He and his wife stayed in the other mansion on the estate. It was good for a little privacy. He drove into the driveway and got out. He took a deep breath, every day, it got harder to stand Melissa. He loosened his tie as he walked into the grand foyer. Melissa was lounging on a couch, holding a glass of champagne, and scrolling through her tablet when Marcus walked in. She raised her eyes to acknowledge him. "How did the meeting go?" She asked. Marcus grunted. "We did not kill each other. There was no shooting either," he removed hi
"BE GOOD TO Grandma, alright?" I said to Jake as I bent down to place a kiss on his cheek. "He is always good, aren't you?" Mother came out to let Jake in, she hugged him close. I have always believed that she spoilt him. Then she looked at me with concerned eyes and said, "You look troubled…""I'm worried about how much inconvenience I am to you," I said. "Nonsense," She snapped. "And that is not what I am talking about. You have eye bags underneath your eyes. Is everything alright?" I nodded and pecked my mother's cheeks before hurrying away. "Bye, mum. I'll be here at 5." Then I hurried into my old sedan and drove away. I knew if I spent any more time there, my mother would know just what was on my mind. The truth was, I had lain awake for almost throughout the night, Marcus's words resounded in my head and even though I refused to admit it to myself, he was right that I would want more than a kiss. I hated the hold that Marcus still had over me. I sped back to the house wher
I HEAVED A sigh of mixed feelings. I ached for Marcus's touch and kiss but I knew nothing good was going to come out of it and resented him for it, so I was both grateful and ungrateful for the interruption. "Fucking hell," He muttered under his breath. I could perceive the aroma of the cigar he had been smoking as his breath fanned my lips. I squirmed away from his grasp and stepped aside. I looked up at the source of the cough, and the coldness from the hazel eyes that stared back at me almost made me stagger. The stunning gorgeous woman stood with an air of impudence as she stared daggers at me. Who was this? I asked myself. Marcus turned slowly. He had a smug smile plastered to his lips as he walked to the woman. "Vittorio was worried about your whereabouts," She said. "And as YOUR WIFE, I was sent to bring you back." She raised her voice slightly and flashed me a glance when she said the two words. His wife? I could not believe my ears. I cleared my throat in an attempt t
THE FOLLOWING WEEK passed in a blur. The family was occupied. Some strange Italians had been found scouting a company owned by the Salvatore family, so Marcus had been sent to deal with the issue. The Giovannis, who were a big mafia family in Italy had found out that Marcus Salvatore was behind the death of one of the sons, for that, Marcus had been protected heavily wherever he went for the past 2 weeks. It was overwhelming for him, but he knew that it was necessary. He had been at one of their offices in the commercial district of town, going over the numbers and amount of money in and going out of the company. He wanted to be sure they were not being ripped off by any employee. That was an offense punishable by death. He sighed as he looked at the papers on the desk. "I should not be doing this," he muttered to himself. He was cranky. After the incident with Olivia, his wife has been giving him a tough time and silent treatment. And he ached for Olivia. His phone rang, cutt
I THOUGHT I had seen the last of Marcus Salvatore after that wedding event, but it seemed like I saw him everywhere and in everything in my daily life. I saw his cold, blue eyes in the eyes of the mailman. I saw his bold confident gait in the walk of my next-door neighbor, and I thought I was running mad when I looked for my son in the park and saw him talking with Marcus. I restrained the urge to walk ahead briskly and snatch my son from Marcus's hold, instead, I stood back and watched them. They looked like how an ideal father and son should look like. On close inspection, one could see the similarities between the two of them, I felt bad for withholding the information that Jake was Marcus's son, but I felt justified because, after all, it was Marcus's family that threw me out and refused me a chance to break the news. After their meeting at the park, Jake had become even happier. I did not want to ask him what they had spoken about, because I preferred not to know. It's the w
MARCUS PRESSED THE gas pedal and weaved through the traffic. He could feel the pressure building in his head as he drove in. He was blinded with anger and a strange streak of jealousy at Joe. He considered sending Àngel Mario, one of his most trusted men, to "take care" of Joe. By "take care" He meant to kill and make the body vanish. He smiled at the thought but turned to look at the bright happy look on Jake and he calmed down. He did not know what it was about this kid that always calmed him down and was very familiar, and with his wife gone for some impromptu visit to her family house, Marcus knew there was no better time to spend some good time with the kid than now. He knew his wife would notaproe of their outing. "Where do you want to go?" Marcus asked as Jake pressed his face out the window to watch the buildings wheeze past with speed. The little kid seemed to be having the time of his life just being in such a fancy car and feeling the air-conditioner blast his face. Mar
