LOGINCHAPTER 4
JENNA’S POV Grandpa blew off a cynical laugh as he said, “ so you were real?” His eyes trailed to Rob’s bandaged hand. “You into sports?” He questioned, still eying his hand suspiciously. I felt my heart drop into my stomach. I turned to look at Rob, he gave a slight smirk as his eyes met mine. Please don’t say I did that, oh God please. “Oh no, my hand got caught in the door back at work, So yeah this” he waved his arm. “Of course I am real, my cute little Jennie here really did a good one in keeping us a secret,” he grabbed onto my hand as he gave a light hearted laughter. Little Jennie? No one’s fucking called me that since high school. “Oh well, you missed starters, but you came just in time for the main course mr-?” “Rob, Dimitri Rob” his voice resonated. Everyone got settled in. It felt so real, the dinner, Rob by my side, I never believed I could pull this off. “So how did you two meet?” Grandpa started. “Can’t we have a quiet dinner without you interrogating, grandpa?” “Common sweetie, I’m sure he is just curious about us,” Rob said. “We actually met in a club” he shifted his gaze to me. “Little missy here was a bit tipsy and as we’d have it, I ended up being her knight in shining armor,” he winked at me. I found myself blushing at that little action. It was a lie, well we did meet in a club, but still. “I actually saw her walk in and I knew from there I had to get her for myself,” Okay now that was very cliché. I tried to hold back a giggle. “I’m guessing she had loads of-“ “Tequila!” Both chorused as they stared at each other in amusement. I think he’s warming up to Rob. Grandpa’s voice dropped to a low tone as he leaned forward “ where do you work, Rob?” “Uhm, I actually work as a manager at RD companies,” I paused as I almost choked on the vegetable I just put in my mouth. I started feeling nervous and didn’t notice when my legs started to shake. Huge hands started to rub my legs. My eyes dilated. I turned to look at Rob as he nodded his head signaling me to calm down. What does he mean he works at RD companies? Like the RD companies we’ve been trying to partner with for a long time? As much as I was shocked, I was also amazed. I could have sworn I’ve met the manager of RD companies and he doesn’t look anything like the person eating dinner with my family. Or maybe he got fired and then replaced with Rob? I shrugged. Well I’ve got more issues to worry about now other than that. Grandpa’s face gleamed with delight. “My, my isn’t that amazing? And why am I coming to know of this now?” His gaze narrowed to my direction. “Uhm-uhm,” I stuttered. Rob stretched his hand to mine and gave it a light squeeze. “I’m sure Jennie didn’t want to mix business with pleasure hence why she kept it a secret. Isn’t that right honey?” “Uh yeah, right”. I confirmed, giving a slight nod. “Well that makes us very much acquainted then. We’ve been planning to partner with your company for a while now, and seeing you’re going to be in our family soon makes it much easier”. “That’s for sure sir”. “Quit the formalities, I’m not that old, you can call me O’Neil” grandpa spoke in his crackling old voice. If it wasn’t for the grey hair and beards, grandpa would definitely pass as being 40. I shot him an eye. He gave off a light hearted laugh “Give your old man a break, girl.” “ So….” He paused to sip into his wine. “ I want to assume you’re both planning a wedding soon,” grandpa shot a look at both of us. What is this old man up to again? He asked to see my boyfriend, now he wants us married? This couldn’t have gotten any worse. “Not yet grandpa,” I blurted. His gaze shifted to Rob, staring with a questioning look. “Rob?” “What she’s trying to say is, with the job I have currently, getting married isn’t really a priority right now”. He continued. “ I really wouldn’t want to put your lovely granddaughter in a life of discomfort.” “Ohh, I see,” Yess, way to go Rob. I didn’t even notice when I blew out a sigh of relief. “Well then, we’d go ahead with the wedding preparations”. Grandpa said with a sinister smile. “What?” We both called out at the same time. “I don’t think you heard Rob right grandpa, his job isn’t enough to think of starting a family right now. I think you should give us more time to think this through.” At this point I could feel my heart thud so loudly. Our expressions suddenly filled with confusion. This shouldn’t be happening. I suddenly felt bad for dragging poor Rob into this. The plan was to come here and play pretend boyfriend for a couple hours and everyone goes their way, live their fucking goddamn life not getting married. I could see Rob starting to become visibly uncomfortable. “Grandpa, I think you’re just filled with too much excitement,” Rob chimed in. “Jenna and I need more time to think this through, you see.” “Nonsense,” grandpa said as he paused to sip into his wine. “Son! Money isn’t our problem here. Take it as me being generous to my soon to be son-in-law.” I got cut off, just when I was about to speak. “That’s final.” “So it’s settled then, you both are getting married nextweek” he continued. “A toast, to our soon to be weds,” he raises he glass up in the air. Glasses clicked together, the only thing I can think of is how woefully my plan failed. My gaze turned to Rob. His expression was flat, straight, anything you’d want to call something that lacked emotion. Just when I thought I was the player, rather I got played.CHAPTER 122ROB’S POVThe woman at the front desk looked at us as though we were an inconvenience. The sharp sigh from her lips was enough to tell as she dropped down the piece she was knitting. Her lips pressed thin as she swung towards our direction for the second time. “I already told you, we don’t disclose information about any of our residents here. Both old and new, now if you would stop interrupting me.” I didn’t know how long we’d been standing here for, but it was long enough for my patience to start running out. “Ma’am, we just need to confirm if Elena stayed here and if she did you’d be doing us a really huge favour.”“No.” The reply came rather too quickly. “I’m sorry if you don’t leave right now, I might need to call the cops on you.”Before I knew it, Phil had already whipped out his badge. The shiny metal reflecting beneath the fluorescent lights. “We’re investigating a homicide,” he says calmly. “So you can either decide to let this go the easy way or we come back wi
CHAPTER 121ROB’S POVThe holding room smelled of dust and coffee. I sat rigidly on the metal chair, the sound of metal handcuffs clanked against each other every time I moved. Above me the almost dim fluorescent light flickered at intervals. My irritation heightened along with it. “Let’s try this again,” one of the officers glanced up at me, lazily flipping through a thin file. “I already told you everything.” I leaned back into my chair, letting out a very exhausting sigh. There was no clock in the room and I could only wonder how long I’d been here for. An hour? Two?Another officer who’d been standing at the corner of the room arms crossed inched closer, drawing out one of the chairs across from me. “What was your relationship with Elena like?”“I barely knew her.”The officer raised a brow, scoffing almost immediately. “You really expect us to believe that?”“Yes I do!” I snapped, hitting my cuffed wrists on the table. “She used to work for Isabelle and that’s it.”“And how lo
CHAPTER 120ROB’S POV“Sure you don’t want to get that?” Phil points towards the direction where my phone had been ringing for the past minute. I grunt out, stretching forward to grab the phone. I’m suprised at the caller. It’s Cassy?I couldn’t think of a proper reason for why she would be calling but one reason kept resonating in my mind. I swiped the answer button instantly. “Cassy! Uhm hi, it’s weird to see your call.” I almost cringed from embarrassment after saying that. Probably not the best idea to spew out exactly what’s on your mind. “Yeah, Rob.” A long exhale followed, almost like she was running out of breath.“Are you okay?”“Yes, yes! I know this is already awkward but it shouldn’t be me you should be worried about….” I chime in before she completes her sentence. “Is Jenna okay? What happened?”“I know I wasn’t supposed to tell you this, but I couldn’t figure out who else to call. Jenna is being irrational right now and she won’t listen to me.”I can feel my body an
CHAPTER 119ISABELLE’S POV“This is…how? I mean, how did you manage to get all of this?” I said, sounding almost out of breath as I flipped through the file. “You meant to say thank you?” Damien says over my shoulder, but I don’t look his way. I’m too engrossed in what I’m looking at. As much as I knew they were fake, they looked really believable. Every evidence that once and might have connected me to the death of Elena now pointed all to Rob. “Nice huh?” Damien assumed. “With Rob gone, we can finally be together again. Live the life we’ve dreamed.”It feels like the air has stilled around me. I keep my arms folded against my chest, turning my gaze away from the file. “Don’t you think we should find another way around this?” My voice goes small, it’s unlike me. Damien doesn’t answer right away, instead he moves away to the center of the room before lighting his cigar. “I’m talking to you, Damien,” I called out, a little louder than before. I can hear the anger brimming in his
CHAPTER 118JENNA’S POV“Are you still brooding over what Rob did last week?” Cassy says over the video call, managing to chew so lightly on her French toast. “No, but I have every right to still be mad at him. I mean! You know how long I’d been working my butts off just to secure that deal with the Craters…..”“Yes, but he misses you, Jenna! Don’t you see?”My chair made a small creak as I turned around, my eyes following in the same suit as it orbited hard into my skull and back. I didn’t know what irritated me more. The thought of Rob or the mere mention of him. “I'd rather remain blind, thank you.”“You’re being stubborn.” Cassy clicked her tongue aggressively. “I see the way your eyes soften when I bring him up. Do you a favour and quit lying to yourself.”Me? Stubborn? I could go on to beat the allegations but that could only get me more talks about Rob that I didn’t want to hear about. “I’ve got work to do, bye!”The call ended right before Cassy could even protest. I let ou
CHAPTER 117ROB’S POV“Seems here he’s been in this school all his life.” Phil muttered, his fingers scratched at his beard as he continued to flip through the pages. “Poor guy, this place was his life.”Turns out Damien had been enrolled in this boarding school since he was a child up until he’d left for college. I couldn’t help but wonder why it was so. “Can we have the lady back here, I’ve got some questions.” I said, still fixed on the file I was reading. Phil dialed into his phone and the lady waltzed in almost immediately. “You asked for me?” She asked, leaning casually into her seat. “Yes!” I replied hurriedly. “Uhm lady…”“Call me Martha, dear.”“Right! Martha. You knew Damien very well, didn’t you?”“Oh yes!” Her voice sang beautifully. “He was amongst our brightest students, too hard to not pick interest into. Sadly his mother passed just before he got admitted into our college.”I couldn’t imagine how distraught he’d have been. “And his father?” I asked almost immedia
CHAPTER 82ISABELL’S POVThe moment I stepped foot inside the building, there was no stopping the rush of memories that flooded within me. I can still remember the first day I came in here. A young and growing model with so much determination, wanting to grow my portfolio. I’d overheard my colleag
CHAPTER 85ISABELLE’S POVI hear the door slam with the usual violent thud. Each step was already memorized and I knew exactly what came after the next. I didn’t even need to look at the clock to know Rob was back. He never came home gently anymore. And it had now become a routine since the last f
CHAPTER 84JENNA’S POV “Do you want some juice? You looked parched.” Adrian questions, his head is poking through my room door. So you could kill me slowly? I rather pass. I manage a smile, “I don’t feel thirsty though, but I’d let you know if I do.” I’d been hunched over my back for the past tw
CHAPTER 77ROB’S POVThe file landed on my desk with a quiet thud. “Here are the papers for the year’s asset liquidation.” My secretary said softly. I peered up. Totally perplexed by what she had just said. “What liquidation?”She blinked at me multiple times. “I…I thought you were informed sir.”
