CHAPTER 4
JENNA’S POV Grandpa blew off a cynical laugh as he said, “ so you were real?” His eyes trailed to Rob’s bandaged hand. “You into sports?” He questioned, still eying his hand suspiciously. I felt my heart drop into my stomach. I turned to look at Rob, he gave a slight smirk as his eyes met mine. Please don’t say I did that, oh God please. “Oh no, my hand got caught in the door back at work, So yeah this” he waved his arm. “Of course I am real, my cute little Jennie here really did a good one in keeping us a secret,” he grabbed onto my hand as he gave a light hearted laughter. Little Jennie? No one’s fucking called me that since high school. “Oh well, you missed starters, but you came just in time for the main course mr-?” “Rob, Dimitri Rob” his voice resonated. Everyone got settled in. It felt so real, the dinner, Rob by my side, I never believed I could pull this off. “So how did you two meet?” Grandpa started. “Can’t we have a quiet dinner without you interrogating, grandpa?” “Common sweetie, I’m sure he is just curious about us,” Rob said. “We actually met in a club” he shifted his gaze to me. “Little missy here was a bit tipsy and as we’d have it, I ended up being her knight in shining armor,” he winked at me. I found myself blushing at that little action. It was a lie, well we did meet in a club, but still. “I actually saw her walk in and I knew from there I had to get her for myself,” Okay now that was very cliché. I tried to hold back a giggle. “I’m guessing she had loads of-“ “Tequila!” Both chorused as they stared at each other in amusement. I think he’s warming up to Rob. Grandpa’s voice dropped to a low tone as he leaned forward “ where do you work, Rob?” “Uhm, I actually work as a manager at RD companies,” I paused as I almost choked on the vegetable I just put in my mouth. I started feeling nervous and didn’t notice when my legs started to shake. Huge hands started to rub my legs. My eyes dilated. I turned to look at Rob as he nodded his head signaling me to calm down. What does he mean he works at RD companies? Like the RD companies we’ve been trying to partner with for a long time? As much as I was shocked, I was also amazed. I could have sworn I’ve met the manager of RD companies and he doesn’t look anything like the person eating dinner with my family. Or maybe he got fired and then replaced with Rob? I shrugged. Well I’ve got more issues to worry about now other than that. Grandpa’s face gleamed with delight. “My, my isn’t that amazing? And why am I coming to know of this now?” His gaze narrowed to my direction. “Uhm-uhm,” I stuttered. Rob stretched his hand to mine and gave it a light squeeze. “I’m sure Jennie didn’t want to mix business with pleasure hence why she kept it a secret. Isn’t that right honey?” “Uh yeah, right”. I confirmed, giving a slight nod. “Well that makes us very much acquainted then. We’ve been planning to partner with your company for a while now, and seeing you’re going to be in our family soon makes it much easier”. “That’s for sure sir”. “Quit the formalities, I’m not that old, you can call me O’Neil” grandpa spoke in his crackling old voice. If it wasn’t for the grey hair and beards, grandpa would definitely pass as being 40. I shot him an eye. He gave off a light hearted laugh “Give your old man a break, girl.” “ So….” He paused to sip into his wine. “ I want to assume you’re both planning a wedding soon,” grandpa shot a look at both of us. What is this old man up to again? He asked to see my boyfriend, now he wants us married? This couldn’t have gotten any worse. “Not yet grandpa,” I blurted. His gaze shifted to Rob, staring with a questioning look. “Rob?” “What she’s trying to say is, with the job I have currently, getting married isn’t really a priority right now”. He continued. “ I really wouldn’t want to put your lovely granddaughter in a life of discomfort.” “Ohh, I see,” Yess, way to go Rob. I didn’t even notice when I blew out a sigh of relief. “Well then, we’d go ahead with the wedding preparations”. Grandpa said with a sinister smile. “What?” We both called out at the same time. “I don’t think you heard Rob right grandpa, his job isn’t enough to think of starting a family right now. I think you should give us more time to think this through.” At this point I could feel my heart thud so loudly. Our expressions suddenly filled with confusion. This shouldn’t be happening. I suddenly felt bad for dragging poor Rob into this. The plan was to come here and play pretend boyfriend for a couple hours and everyone goes their way, live their fucking goddamn life not getting married. I could see Rob starting to become visibly uncomfortable. “Grandpa, I think you’re just filled with too much excitement,” Rob chimed in. “Jenna and I need more time to think this through, you see.” “Nonsense,” grandpa said as he paused to sip into his wine. “Son! Money isn’t our problem here. Take it as me being generous to my soon to be son-in-law.” I got cut off, just when I was about to speak. “That’s final.” “So it’s settled then, you both are getting married nextweek” he continued. “A toast, to our soon to be weds,” he raises he glass up in the air. Glasses clicked together, the only thing I can think of is how woefully my plan failed. My gaze turned to Rob. His expression was flat, straight, anything you’d want to call something that lacked emotion. Just when I thought I was the player, rather I got played.CHAPTER 45 NARRATOR POV Under the bright fluorescent lights, photos of Elijah’s body were plastered across a transparent board. Photos of the warehouse, Jenna and an unidentified suspect all connected with each other. A light knock fell on the door. “Come in!” One of the forensics scientists approached detective Morgan with a clipboard. “You better be coming with good news” Morgan blurted before the scientist came into close proximity with him. “Well we’ve finished processing the scene and the samples that were provided, and there’s not much apparently.” Morgan’s voice was tight. “What do you by ‘not much’.” “We found no foreign fingerprints except that of the dead man, no DNA, nothing on Jenna’s restraints either. Everything else doesn’t seem to have been tampered with by a third party.” “How is that possible? Do you know what this means?” Just as the scientists were about to give a reply , an officer walked into the office. “Morning chief! We found survei
CHAPTER 44 NARRATOR POV A few Police cruisers alongside an ambulance encircled the warehouse. Red and blue lights flashed against the structure, creating a temporary glow. Yellow tape went up fast. Officers approached slowly, guns in the air while moving with caution. “Fan out.” Detective Morgan called out. “Keep your eyes on the area and call if you find anything.” “Roger!” Two officers replied briefly before stepping away into the shadows. Detective Morgan continued to walk further, sweeping his flashlight across the dusty floor. Eventually, he found himself walking down into the cellar. The fresh smell of blood stung his nose, as his eyes met the ground with horror. “Over here” he yelled. “We’ve got a body.” A few officers rushed towards his voice. Their faces also had the same expression as dey active Morgan’s did. They stood around the body in circles, while Morgan crouched to take a closer look. “Three shots in the head. It seems our killer really wante
CHAPTER 43 ISABELLE’S POV The road stretched endlessly ahead of me while the warehouse loomed further into the distance. The tires hummed loudly against the bumpy road, but my mind was too occupied with thoughts to notice. I’d barely slept well in days. Not since Elijah showed up, with threats hanging around my neck like I was being held on a hanger. And now here I was, driving back to that godforsaken warehouse. Finally I pulled up at the site, the old Mercedes still sat in the same corner as it was the last time. I stepped out of the car, the gravel crunching beneath my boots with each movement. I stretched to the passenger’s seat to pull a little black bag. Before walking towards the door I quietly made a mental note of what I was carrying. I’d managed to gather the documents Elijah had asked for. Fake passports, new IDs and even forged visas. All sourced through the dirtiest channels I knew. One would ask why and how, but they just happene
CHAPTER 42 ISABELLE’S POV My phone rang just as I was about to step into my apartment. It was an unknown number. I contemplated on whether to answer or not, but I had no idea who it was or how important the call might be so I picked it up. “Hello?” A muffled voice filtered through the speaker after a few seconds. “I'm probably wondering how Jenna left the hospital.” I froze. My hands grabbed tightly onto the door knobs, my knuckles began to redden. “Who’s this? What do you know?” “You’ve been playing nurse far too well, Isabelle and now I’d like to give you a promotion. You can have what you’ve always desired if you listen carefully.” This person knew me, they’ve been watching me, all this time. My body trembled. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Where’s Jenna?” I snapped. “We wouldn’t know until you come to find out for yourself. Abandoned warehouse by Mayfield’s creek. I’d be expecting you.” Mayfield’s creek? That place was a mile from anywh
CHAPTER 41 JENNA’S POV My head throbbed before my eyes opened. The air was thick with something far from the scent of a hospital room—it was musty. I rubbed my eyes in circles as I tried to adjust to the dark room. I looked around, no windows. A dim light flickered above me, it was more or less useless at it barely shone bright enough to even see around the room. When I tried to get up, the pounding in my head doubled, so I retreated back to my previous position. “Hello? Is anyone there?” I blurted loudly, using my hand as a guide around the dark room. Silence. I continued to yell until my voice gave out, my throat became patched. I had to reserve the little energy I had so I kept quiet. I curled myself into the corner, shaking from cold and hunger. After waiting for what felt like a few hours, I began to drift into sleep from exhaustion. And then. Two clicks. I jumped up, startled as I turned to see where the clicks came from. Beneath the shad
CHAPTER 40ROB’S POVI sat at the corner of the lodge waiting for when it would be time for visiting hours. After what had happened the previous day, I knew I had to be here always. ‘Rob’ I could still remember the way she called out my name, and the sense of recognition that lingered in her eyes. She was beginning to remember, yet what I didn’t understand was how her condition worsened. Was that a bad sign? Or had I walked into her at a bad hour. I couldn’t get answers except to see her again, no matter how long it took. My feet tapped continuously against the floor as I glanced up to check the huge clock hanging at the reception. Just a few more minutes, until I get to see you, Jenna. It was finally time and I walked towards the nurses station to check into the visitors book. The hallways were quiet as usual. The only footsteps that resounded were that of mine and the nurse in charge of Jenna’s ward. “How’s my wife doing?” I asked the nurse. “She’s fine sir, but I advise
