Trinity POV: The Shadow Of Julian Hayes

Cassius is talking to the white-tuxedoed staff when I walk past him. The veil obscuring the upper half of my face works like magic. He doesn't even recognize me.

I touch his arm, and whisper from the corner of my mouth, "I'm right here."

Cassius turns, his jaw dropping slightly as I brush past him to take my seat. He sits and stares at the hat, then at the dark lace covering my eyes. His mouth hangs open, his eyes filled with wonder.

I smirk under the ne

Trinity's POV: The Doctor Will See You NowI walk into the hospital lobby and every nurse lifts her head to look at me. The one behind the desk straightens. "Ma'am, can I help you?"I flash a fake badge. "Dr. Robin Shelby. Alpha Julian asked me to come about his daughter, Lily, who went missing."The nurse gasps, her eyes widening. "Dr. Shelby? The Dr. Robin Shelby? From the Bayer Medical Research Center?"I smile and nod. "That's the one."The nurses trade glances. One of them frowns. "You look different from your pictures.""What's your name?""Linn.""Okay, Linn. I need every piece of information you have on Lily's last twenty-four hours here. And there's no need to call alpha Julian. He's tied up in lower Manhattan, and we don't want him divided. Now, please, get to work."It isn't only Linn who moves. The others join her, scurrying between cabinets, dropping files on the counter until the pile leans. When they finish, Linn says, "This is everything we have on Lily. She's been wit

Julian's POV: Ghost in a Red BoxThe detectives have questioned me and gone. They questioned Frank too. Jack and I have already visited Peggie's parents, and I'm still hearing her mother's sobs in my head.Damn. The loss feels like mine already. In a way, it is. She died in my house. I didn't know her that well, but I don't have to. I swore to her mother I'll find the murderer and make them pay. And I meant it. Now we're in my office at Hayes Group headquarters. An hour ago, I gave the go-ahead to file for bankruptcy. I'm hunched over my desk again. I can't seem to stop doing it. Jack sits across from me, twirling a pen around his thin fingers. He was there when the police questioned me. He heard it when I told the cops I think Vivian could be involved in my daughter's abduction. Jack thinks I'm crackpot for saying something like that to police detectives. "You just implicated your own Luna," he says."You want to hear something crazy?""Crazier than your Luna killing your daughte

Trinity's POV: Seven FacesI sit staring at the small vial in my hands. The blue liquid inside catches the light from the kitchen and throws a faint, trembling glow across my palm. A small bag sits on the floor by my feet, packed for two days at most. Inside it are my disguises, enough to make me seven different people, including one that turns me into a man. I've never worn that one. I hope I never have to.Mabel sits across from me, hands clasped in her laps. "Are you sure you don't want breakfast?” She asks. “Coffee for the road, a bit of toast? You need something in your stomach.""I'll just throw it up when I get on the train.""Then I'll pack you a sandwich.""It's okay, Mabel. You've done so much for me already.""Don't talk like that, Trin." She takes my hand and holds it tight. "You sound like you're leaving and I'll never see you again. You'll be safe, won't you?""I'll be safe.""Promise me something. Now that you're fated to Julian, make peace with him. If not as lovers,

Julian's POV: The Empty BedAn ambulance is already parked outside my house when I arrive. I watch, numb, as they carry the body out on a gurney. Frank puts a hand on the back of his neck."She was strangled," he says."Frank. Be quiet."A brown sedan pulls into the drive and Keogh climbs out. He walks to the gurney, flips back the white sheet, and glances at the body. I stand there staring, so full of anger that I begin to doubt my own sanity.Keogh steps away, wrinkling his nose, and joins Frank and me. "Who else was in the house?""No one," Frank says. "I found her.""You were at the hospital with the alpha. All night, in fact."Frank nods."Frank thinks she was strangled," I say."Ah, a good eye, Mr. Frank. Yes, I believe so. The marks on her neck, the bruising. Her face is strained, too. It all checks out." He shakes his head. "I'm sorry, alpha Julian. Such a tragedy."I walk back into the house.I pour liquor for Frank and Keogh. The doctor refuses at first, then changes his min

Julian's POV: The Luna Who Wasn't ThereFrank should have been my beta, not Bob. I've been thinking it for some time now. Frank stands at the door, waiting.Keogh takes the vial from my hand and nods. "Please, alpha. You'll have to excuse us now."I give Lily's hand a quick, gentle squeeze and step back from the bed. Three nurses converge on her. The door shuts, and Frank and I are left in the hallway."You wanted to tell me something?" I ask my now most loyal man. "Perhaps later, sir."I look at his face. His eyes are bloodshot, his beard has been growing for days, and his hair is a mess. "I don't think there's anything worse than what I'm going through right now, Frank.""It's beta Bob, sir. He's in Goldrun, starting his water project there. He's finished with Fairview."I go back to staring at Lily's door. So Bob is in Goldrun doing business instead of standing here with me. So what? I don't care anymore. Once Lily is well, once Trinity makes good on her word, I'll deal with Bob.

Trinity's POV: Ink on My FingersMaybe it's because he's drunk that Bob doesn't taste the wrongness of my lips, that they aren't real lips at all.My stomach turns at the taste of Bob's mouth on my tongue. The idiot had stuck his tongue into my mouth, as if trying to swallow mine. I can't do anything about it, so I take it."This is my, uh, friend," he announces to the table. "Viv. I call her Viv. Wait, I didn't know you were coming. You should've called. Here, sit."He steers me into a chair. Across the table, Cassius stares at me, then at the entrance, then at me again. He's shocked, of course. He doesn't know it's me under here. He's probably wondering what he'll do if the real Trinity walks in."Alpha Cassius Lane," I say. "How nice to see you again.""Luna. Good to see you.""My sister told me you had to go to the hospital."His eyes narrow. "She did? Yes. The doctor said E. coli, or something like it.""I hope you're better now.""I am. Thank you, Luna. How's Lily?""Lily is doi
