Chapter 4

Autor: Maple Muse
I took Silas's supplementary card, but I didn’t go downstairs and splurge with it.

I simply ordered the restaurant’s standard business dinner set and wrote a detailed report covering the food, atmosphere, and service.

Early the next morning, I placed both the report and the card on his desk. He glanced over the report, his brows twitching slightly.

[She only ordered the dinner set? Why is she so stingy with money? Does she think I’d feel bad about spending it? Does she seriously think I’m cheap? No way. I need her to understand that my money is her money.]

He pushed the card back toward me. "Keep it. Use it for client entertainment going forward."

"Alright." I obediently accepted it.

The next few days passed peacefully.

My daily routine consisted of making that ridiculous special blend of coffee, handling paperwork, and occasionally dealing with Linda’s passive-aggressive comments.

As for Silas, he continued wearing his untouchable ice-king expression every day while his inner monologue became more dramatic by the hour.

[She chose a white dress today. She looks stunning. Absolutely angelic.]

[She smiled at me just now! Even if it only lasted a fraction of a second, it was definitely for me. She must have feelings for me!]

[It's nearly lunch. I wonder what she's having? I’d give anything to join her... but no, that’s too transparent. I can’t break character.]

Every day, I nearly laughed myself to death. Honestly, this job wasn’t nearly as unbearable as I’d expected.

Everything changed that afternoon when Silas received an unexpected call from his grandfather, Edward Vance—my supposed future father-in-law—and decided to take it on speakerphone.

"You little brat! I heard Jade started working at your company. You haven't been bullying that poor girl, have you?" an energetic voice boomed through the phone.

Silas rubbed his forehead. "No."

[As if I would bully her! I spoil her if anything!]

"Good! I'm warning you right now. Jade's a wonderful girl. If you scare her away, I'll break your legs myself! So when are you bringing her home for dinner?"

"I'm busy," Silas replied coldly.

[Grandpa, nicely done! Keep helping me out! Dinner! I want to bring her home right now!]

"Busy, busy, busy. That's all you ever say! I don't care. This weekend, you are bringing her home!"

With that, Edward hung up, and silence filled the office.

Pretending I hadn’t heard anything, I lowered my head and organized the documents in my hands.

Silas glanced at me and cleared his throat.

[What’s going through her head? Is she annoyed? Does she think my family is pressuring her into marriage? How do I even bring this up without sounding weird?]

After agonizing over it for ages, he finally forced out a sentence. "The company team-building event is this weekend. Attendance is mandatory."

I blinked. Since when did the Vance Group even have team-building events?

[Perfect! I'll bring her home under the excuse of team-building. It won't be awkward, and Grandpa gets what he wants, too. God, I'm a genius.]

I nearly burst out laughing. "Got it, Mr. Vance."

When the weekend arrived, I traveled to the suburban address he provided, only to find that this team-building was actually a private barbecue in his own backyard.

Furthermore, the "team" turned out to be a grand total of two people: Silas and me.

Wearing casual clothes, Silas was struggling visibly as he hovered over the grill.

[Why is grilling this hard? It's almost burnt. Is she going to think I'm useless? I should've hired a pro for this.]

I walked over naturally and took the tongs from his hand. "Allow me."

"Mm." He stepped aside obediently, though his eyes never left me.

[She's so perfect. She even looks so good grilling skewers. Once we're married, will she cook for me too?]

As I expertly turned the skewers over the flames, I casually said, "Mr. Vance, I think my grandfather once mentioned arranging a marriage for me."

Silas instantly stiffened.

[It's happening! She's finally mentioning it! Is she about to say yes or no? Dammit, why am I this anxious? My heart is racing!]

I continued calmly, "I heard the man is very impressive, but I've never met him. Honestly... I'm not really a fan of arranged marriages."

I said it on purpose, eager to see his response.

He stayed silent for a very long time. So long that I thought his thoughts had stopped completely.

[She isn't a fan... well, that shouldn't surprise me. It makes sense. Nobody actually likes arranged marriages anymore. She's incredible and probably has men lining up for her.]

His internal monologue was heavy with letdown.

Feeling a sudden wave of sympathy, I nearly confessed everything right then and there.

At that moment, the villa door swung open.

A glamorous woman strutted inside, swaying her hips as she walked straight over and wrapped herself around Silas's arm intimately.

"Silas, I'm back. Did you miss me?" As she spoke, she shot me a provocative look.

Silas scowled and tried pulling his arm away, but failed.

Immediately, I recognized her as a rising actress who'd recently skyrocketed to fame. Her name was Eve Turner.

[Why is she here? Who let her in? Crap, crap, crap. Jade is definitely going to misunderstand!]

Silas's inner world had descended into total chaos.

Meanwhile, Eve's smile only grew more smug. She turned to me sweetly and said, "You must be the new assistant. I'm Silas's girlfriend. Looking forward to working with you."

Before I could react, my mind suddenly went blank.

A sharp pain exploded through my head. My vision blacked out, and then I lost consciousness.

The next day, I placed the voice recording which clearly documented Lucas's blackmail right onto Silas's office desk."I can't let him get away with this."I looked at him, my gaze unwavering. "He didn’t just scam me. There must be other victims out there."Silas, I need your help. Not to pay him off, but to use your resources. I want to unearthed every single piece of evidence against him so he gets the punishment he deserves."Silas stared back at me, the sheer admiration and love in his eyes nearly melting me on the spot.[Jade's so brave and incredibly smart! She isn't begging for help, rather she’s inviting me to fight alongside her. That's my woman!]He gripped my hand tightly. "Leave it to me."Silas's efficiency was terrifyingly impressive. It took his team only half a day to follow the clues and dug up Lucas's criminal activities. He had used the same tactics to defraud multiple women over the years. With insurmountable evidence against him and multiple charges compou

The moment those words left my mouth, the entire world seemed to fall silent. The smug arrogance on Lucas's face froze completely, twisting into something almost absurd.Silas froze, too.The storm raging inside his head suddenly went still, leaving behind only one sentence repeating endlessly.[She likes me... She said she likes me... She actually said it herself... I'm not dreaming...]The overwhelming joy in his eyes was so intense it almost felt tangible.Lucas was the first to snap back to reality. Pointing wildly between Silas and me, he doubled over with hysterical laughter, practically doubled over."Fiance? You've completely lost it, Jade. You were so hung up on me that you actually tracked down a cheap imitation to take my place? Tell me, when you're in bed with him, do you still have to scream my name just to feel something?""Shut your mouth!" Silas roared. The fury in his voice felt hot enough to ignite the air itself. Finally snapping out of the shock, he yanked

For the next two days, I kept a calm expression on the surface while chaos raged inside me.Lucas, the nightmare that had destroyed my entire life. Now that I'd been given a second chance, I refused to let him drag me back into hell again.Ask Silas for money? No way. I couldn't do it.It wasn't just about pride. More importantly, this was my own personal demon, and I needed to destroy it with my own hands.Silas noticed everything.Rather than interrogating me, he focused on small gestures of care, bringing my favorite meals daily and searching for any way to lift my spirits.[She's barely touching her food again. What is going on? Why is she keeping this from me? Does she still feel like she can't trust me?]The worry in his inner voice only made my heart ache more, and it strengthened my resolve even further.'Silas, once I deal with this mess, I'll tell you everything.'Then, the third day, which was the deadline Lucas had set, finally came.He sent a text that afternoo

Ever since I agreed to give dating Silas a go, our relationship had progressed at lightning speed. At the office, he was still the same cold and expressionless CEO, but outside of work, he awkwardly engineered all kinds of ridiculous "coincidences".For example, his car would just happen to break down near my office right when I got off work, forcing me to give him a ride home.Or we'd randomly run into each other at the bookstore I frequented, followed by dinner together afterward.Meanwhile, the voice inside his head had evolved from nervous insecurity into nonstop praise.[Jade is seriously perfect. She can handle anything, and she somehow even makes eating tacos look elegant.][Jade is gorgeous when she's working. A career-driven woman is super attractive.]Little by little, I also got used to having him in my life. That day, Edward called again, urging us to come home for dinner. This time, however, Silas didn’t make excuses.[Finally, I can officially bring Jade home! Gr

The moment those words left my mouth, Silas completely froze.[W-What did I just hear? She said... she said we could try getting to know each other? Am I hallucinating? Is this a dream?]Inside his head, fireworks and celebration cannons were exploding so loudly they practically made my ears ring.Trying not to laugh, I pushed open the car door. "I'm home. Goodnight."Then I walked straight into the neighborhood without looking back.Behind me, I could still feel Silas's scorching gaze fixed on my back.[She agreed! She actually agreed! AHHHH! I need to go run laps! No, maybe I should jump into an ice bath and calm down!]Over the next few days, Silas remained in a state of extreme excitement. On the surface, he still looked like the same cold and detached CEO. However, every time I got close to him, the nonstop commentary inside his head became impossible to ignore.[Her hair smells like oranges today. It smells amazing.][She dropped her documents. Should I pick them up imm

When I woke up again, I found myself lying in an unfamiliar room. The lights were off. Only the cold moonlight streaming through the window illuminated the blurry figure sitting beside the bed.It was Silas. He sat on the carpet with his back against the bedframe, looking strangely lonely.[Why isn't she awake yet? The doctor said it was only emotional stress combined with low blood sugar, so why has she been unconscious this long? This is all my fault. I never should've let her meet Eve.]My head still hurt slightly as my memories slowly returned.Eve. The woman who claimed to be Silas's girlfriend.A strange irritation rose in my chest.I shifted slightly, and the bed let out a soft creak.Reacting instantly, Silas stood and hurried to my side, clicking on the bedside lamp. The warm glow revealed the heavy shadows under his eyes and a look of deep-seated anxiety he was unable to mask."Are you alright? Is anything hurting?" he inquired, his voice thick and raspy.[Thank goo
