Chapter 1

My grandmother's hand was really cold. So cold it sent a shiver down my spine.

She went in closer toward me with a child-like wonder in her eyes.

"Zack is coming back, right? I heard it on the phone. Is he giving me a surprise?"

My heart tightened. It felt as if someone were squeezing it hard.

Zack and I had grown up without our parents. We survived on scraps because our grandmother raised us by scavenging trash.

She always said, "Once you two are old enough, I will finally get to enjoy my life."

The day Zack passed, he had sent me a message.

[Miles, I bought Grandma a red wool sweater. It will surely look good on her.]

Later, all I received was a bag. Inside was that red sweater, still with the tags on.

That was when our grandmother started losing her mind.

The doctor said it was too much of a shock. Alzheimer's.

I thought maybe forgetting the painful things was not entirely bad.

"Zack is working late. I told you, right? He's working extra on New Year's Eve; he'll get paid much more."

I held her hand and hugged it. She nodded and subconsciously played with my shirt pocket.

"Oh, yes. Zack said he was going to buy me new clothes, too."

My throat tightened so much that it hurt. I clenched my fists, unable to say a single word.

The red wool sweater was still in the bottom drawer of my closet. I did not dare to take it out.

Right at that moment, a knock came on the door.

Opening the door, cold air blew in.

My mother-in-law, Helen Morte, stood in the dimly lit corridor with a box of cake. She smiled at me.

"Miles, about your brother… Gemma was wrong. But so many years have passed. You should let it go. You and Gemma have a son together. They are waiting for you to go home."

I looked at her as she opened her mouth. Yet, I heard nothing. All I heard was a buzzing.

"Let it go? Gemma killed Zack because of her friend. You want me to just let it go?"

Helen's face paled.

I continued, saying, "I will never forgive her in this life. She can stop dreaming."

Then, I slammed the door in her face. Returning to my room, I leaned against the door and slowly slumped to the floor.

In the living room, my grandmother was still humming Zack's favorite nursery rhyme when he was little.

I lowered my hands and retrieved the photo from my pocket. It was taken on the day of Zack's graduation. He was wearing a cap and gown, grinning stupidly at the camera.

I pressed the photo to my chest.

"Zack, I'm sorry. I'm so useless. I can't make the people who hurt you pay the price. But I will never forget about it. One day, I'll avenge you!"

I did not sleep all night.

At dawn, I took the trash downstairs while the morning fog still had not cleared.

Someone suddenly grabbed me by the wrist. The trash bag fell onto the ground.

Gemma was standing there with her eyes bloodshot. She looked rather disheveled.

"Miles, let's talk."

Our son, Dash, got out of the car from the back passenger seat. He walked over to me and tugged at the hem of my shirt.

"Daddy, come home."

His words were like needles prickling my heart.

I gently pried his fingers off me before bending down to look him in the eye.

"Dash, I'm not your daddy."

His eyes instantly reddened.

I merely looked at him coldly. Back then, he said he did not want me as his father, so why was he so sad?

I shrugged Gemma's hand off me.

"I have nothing to say to you. We were over three years ago."

She was trembling.

"He saved my life. I had no choice back then. Miles, I promise you. I will treat you well in the future."

"You're the real monster. Am I right? Didn't you assault that girl and blame it on Zack? Because of you, two innocent people lost their lives! Yet, you still feel no remorse!"Howard was bewildered. He never expected the truth to come to light one day.He knelt on the floor and prostrated himself in front of Gemma."Gemma, we're sorry. Henry has changed! Since they're dead, let them remain dead. Can't we just live our lives?"He knocked his head on the floor repeatedly.Gemma was so furious she almost laughed. How could he brush off two deaths so easily? It was something she could not accept. She stabbed Howard right in his chest. Before his last breath, he also witnessed the death of his younger brother. After killing them, she went to visit Zack's grave, according to the address that her assistant had sent her.Zack's grave was clean and orderly. Clearly, someone was there often to maintain it.She did not forget to bring Dash along. She forced him to kneel and slammed his

That was why Gemma did not expect Dash to lie in front of so many people. When they finally arrived home, Howard welcomed them. His face was still wrapped in bandages, but Dash ran into his arms."Uncle Howard, it hurts…"Howard quickly checked up on Dash. He was horrified when he saw the red handprint on Dash's face.Reading the situation, he glanced at Gemma and asked lightly, "Gemma, what happened? Dash has always been an obedient boy. There must be some misunderstanding. Mothers and sons don't hold grudges. Just talk it out."This time, Gemma did not look at him with admiration. Instead, she just said, "Obedient? Just to you, I guess?"Although Howard was not smart, he had a good eye for reading people. He could sense Gemma's contempt toward him.Stunned, he quickly asked, "What happened?"Then, he quickly gave Dash a look to ask him to tell him what had happened. Unfortunately, this gesture did not escape Gemma's eyes. She glared at Howard and said, "Tell me then, between

"Miles, I know you resent me. But back then, I had to repay Howard for saving my life. You know me. I can't be an ungrateful person. Besides, Zack had done all those things. If I let him free, my conscience wouldn't allow it."I shrugged her off.I said, "What do you know? If Zack truly had done such things, I would send him to prison myself. But he's a hero. He was protecting that girl."Gemma got a little mad hearing what I said. "Miles, you shouldn't joke with the truth. Dash saw it. It was Zack who assaulted that girl. Why are you still insisting on lying? Do you even know what's right and wrong anymore?"I sneered at her and grabbed Dash, who was hiding behind her."Since he saw it, then, ask him right now! Who was the culprit?!"Dash could not stop crying when he heard my harsh words."Uncle Howard! I want Uncle Howard. I don't want Daddy! He's scary. Mom, let's go."For the first time, Gemma, who always seemed to trust her judgement, sensed something was wrong. She grab

"Then, what? I should spend the rest of my life with you? It makes me sick just thinking about it."When he heard me bringing up divorce, Howard secretly cast me a provocative look.Honestly, I never understood what there was to fight over when it came to a woman like her. If he wanted her so badly, he could have her.Gemma's expression stiffened. She froze in a daze."Why? Because of Zack? Miles, don't push this too far."I left without looking back and telling her the reason.Arriving at my place, I saw a tiny figure sitting on the bench next to the door. Anyone who saw this scene would melt. Not me, though. When he saw me, Dash immediately ran over to me."Daddy, you're finally back."I did not open the door. I did not plan on letting him into the house. This place was the last piece of peace I had left."Daddy, are you still mad at me?" His childish voice said the one thing I could not accept. All these years, there was not a single day that I stopped hating this mother-

I buried who I really was. I thought that it would make her like me more. However, I had forgotten something. If someone had no love for you, then they would never love you.No matter what I did, Gemma would not like me any bit better.Just when I was about to leave, Howard barged in. He buried himself in Gemma's arms and cried out, "Gemma, my face hurts."Howard's face was important to him.In this world, someone with good looks would always be treated better. Howard had no great intelligence or impressive education. His emotional intelligence was laughably low.If he had not saved Gemma, he would have been the type of man that Gemma would hate the most. However, because of that debt and that face, Gemma indulged in his every whim. She even found his idiocy endearing. When Gemma heard him cry, her heart softened instantly."Howard, don't be afraid. I'm with you. I won't let anyone bully you."It was unbearable to watch. In fact, I never knew that Gemma had such a tender si

I initially thought that I would not care, but hearing it from Gemma, it infuriated me.She had no right to ask such a thing. Thus, I said with a feigned careless tone, "Yes, Gemma. You killed Zack. You pinned those false accusations on him. Now, you're sending my grandmother to an asylum. The thing I regret the most in this life is meeting you. You're nothing but trouble!"My words instantly stunned Gemma on the spot.I had never said such words to her before, so she had never seen me lose my cool.Something in her mind told her that this was real, that she had killed Zack, but she still refused to believe it. She shook her head violently and said, "Impossible! Miles, you're lying to me!"She said it with such firmness that it crushed whatever sliver of hope I had left.If I knew that Gemma would destroy my family in such a way, I would have stayed far away from her.My parents died when I was very young, so I had always craved to be loved.
