Chapter 5

Author: Autumn Three
At noon, I returned to my workstation, ready to move everything out.

Liam was the one who'd given me the asteroid ornament on my desk. He'd even sworn sincerely that I was his entire world back then.

I smiled self-deprecatingly as I looked at the ornament. In the end, I still took it with me.

Just as I was about to leave with the box of my belongings in my arms, Vivi suddenly walked into the office, looking anxious.

"I'm sorry, everyone. I seem to have lost the necklace I was wearing today. Could I please ask all of you to cooperate for a routine inspection?" she asked.

Everyone else in the office started whispering to each other.

"I saw Ms. Johansen's necklace when I arrived today! The diamond on the necklace was huge! It was so bright and shiny too!"

"I think Ms. Johansen actually worded things too nicely. Someone definitely got greedy at the sight of that diamond necklace and stole it!"

"Oh my goodness! There's actually a thief in our office! I was wondering why the biscuits and snacks on my desk were always going missing!"

Liam was by Vivi's side. He ordered the security guards to block the door, then started searching everyone one by one.

When it was my turn, I put down the box and cooperated with his inspection.

He evidently noticed the asteroid ornament on top of the other items at a glance. After a moment's pause, he still asked someone to empty out the contents of my box.

The contents fell to the floor with a ringing clatter. The ornament was completely smashed and became little more than trash, just like our six-year relationship. The moment cracks formed in it, there was no fixing it.

As several security guards rummaged around on the floor, Vivi suddenly exclaimed in shock, "My necklace!"

Everyone in the office was attracted by the sound of her exclamation. Their gazes landed on me, and their accusations rang out unceasingly behind my back.

"Oh my goodness! Michelle actually stole the new director's necklace! If Mr. Sherman hadn't instructed people to seal off the office, she'd probably have long gotten away with the necklace!"

"I honestly didn't think Michelle was that kind of person! You really can't judge a book by its cover. It's just because the new director swooped in out of nowhere and stole her promotion, right? She's so petty!"

"Damn, Michelle's way too petty. I didn't expect her to be a thief. It's fortunate she's already resigned or I'd be a little afraid of being in the same room as her!"

I turned pale. I definitely hadn't touched Vivi's necklace. Someone must have tampered with my belongings when I was handing in my resignation.

Liam looked ashen as he picked up the diamond necklace from among the assorted items on the floor. He held the necklace with an expression that seemed to say he was extremely disappointed toward me. "Michelle Southwell!"

As he shouted my name in rage, I looked down to see that he'd trampled my belongings underfoot. He even stomped forcefully on the broken fragments of the asteroid ornament.

Just as I lifted my head, he slapped me without giving me any chance to explain. "Apologize to Vivi! Why did you have to steal the necklace I gave her?"

At that moment, I completely gave up on him.

He held in hand a necklace he'd given to Vivi, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars; crushed under his feet was a cheap ornament worth less than a fraction of the necklace's value.

For an instant, I felt tears welling up in my eyes. Being misunderstood by my colleagues hurt less than that slap I'd received from Liam, the person I'd been with for six years. He actually didn't believe me.

Seeing that I wasn't saying anything, he dragged me over to Vivi as if he was taking the trash to the incinerator and said harshly, "I told you to apologize! Explain why you stole the necklace."

A hint of smugness flashed through Vivi's eyes. Soon, though, she pretended to frown and reach out to help me up from the cold floor.

I waved her away, gathered the last bit of stubbornness I could muster, and got up from the floor.

Although my eyes were blurry with tears, I kept my back straight. "I didn't take it! There are surveillance cameras in the office! I request to bring up the surveillance footage to prove my innocence!

Then, I stared into Vivi's eyes and enunciated word by word, "Also, a mere diamond necklace like that isn't even worth my attention!'

Once the burn on my wrist had completely faded, Jayce took me to pick out an evening gown.Outside the boutique, Liam appeared before me once more for the first time in a long time, holding a bouquet of lisianthuses."I'm not marrying Vivi anymore, Michelle. I've finally worked out my feelings recently. You're the only person I like now!" he said. I turned my head away, feeling slightly disgusted. The moment I saw him, the scene of him kneeling and proposing to Vivi on my birthday replayed more and more vividly in my mind.Despite that, Liam was now telling me he actually liked me with those lips that had already kissed another woman. How ridiculous. I couldn't even be bothered to spare him a glance. With his current unkempt, unshaven appearance, Liam was more insignificant than a hair on Jayce's head.I held onto Jayce's arm and circled around Liam, but he ran over and grabbed my wrist. He held Vivi's numerous medical records up in front of me and explained, "Vivi doesn't hav

Before Jayce and I held a wedding, my parents had rushed us into applying for a marriage certificate first. They seemed so afraid that I'd regret the decision that they pushed me into legally tying myself to Jayce as soon as possible. As for Jayce, I also told him truthfully about my very first relationship with Liam. After hearing me out, Jayce rubbed the pale red burn mark on my wrist before planting a kiss on it, looking greatly distressed. "I'll take care of the surveillance footage. You don't have to worry about it. Once your wrist is fully healed, I'll take you to pick out a dress for our engagement banquet."I nodded. ...I was enjoying watching Jayce running around preparing for our engagement banquet.Over the past six years, my world constantly revolved around Liam. Now that I'd completely severed ties with him, I felt as light as if I'd been relieved of a heavy burden.Jayce personally selected a venue, shipped in all kinds of fresh flowers by air, wrote invitations

After I quit my job, I no longer had to spend extra time every day learning computer knowledge that I had no interest in.I had studied jewelry design in university, so I could finally pick up my drawing tools once more and work in the industry that I loved.I was painting in the greenhouse in the afternoon when Jayce paid me a sudden visit. He brought me a tiara inlaid with pearls and diamonds, which I immediately recognized as an antique tiara from the last century. I'd once seen it in a book.I really liked the design on the tiara. The pearls on the tiara were also clear and lustrous, and they were arranged according to their sizes. Additionally, they were cleverly paired with diamonds to look like a lover's tears upon the tiara.Jayce gave this tiara to me. I told him that I hadn't done anything to receive a reward, but he replied that it was a gift that he'd long prepared for his fiancée, so he was just giving it to its rightful owner. My confusion had finally been cleared u

After they heard my story, my parents felt terribly sorry for me.Adam said callously, "Well, we had to let you suffer the bitterness of love before you'd finally understand how well we've been protecting you all this time."But despite his words, I could see the veins standing out on the back of his hands. His expression was so dark he looked like he wanted to grab Liam and beat him up right then and there.Cecilia hugged me and said comfortingly, "Alright. Let's not think about such depressing things anymore now that you're home. It's just a diamond necklace. I'll buy you a few more accessories tomorrow, enough that you can just wear a different one every day."I burst into laughter, the sadness that I'd felt from ruminating on the past had washed away slightly. I had a good sleep that night....The next day, I suddenly received a bunch of missed calls from an unknown number.I had a habit of turning on airplane mode when I slept. The moment I turned it off, I started heari

Cecilia said, "Jayce's feelings for you are sincere, Mimi. He's someone that we had personally picked out for you, and our tastes are never wrong."I nodded. I'd personally seen Jayce's attentiveness and consideration toward me the entire way home. However, I recalled that Liam and Vivi were getting engaged today. While they received everyone's blessings and praise, I was slandered as the thief who'd stolen a necklace. In the end, I chose to tell my parents about my relationship with Liam.Liam pursued my affections in university, and we chose to be together before we'd even graduated. I'd heard a little about the fact that he had a childhood friend, but I hadn't taken it to heart as I'd never seen Vivi with him.Liam had a crystal ball ornament on his desk. Once, when I'd accidentally touched it when I was tidying up his room, he'd actually shot up from his seat and pushed me away. "Don't ever enter my study again. You're not allowed to touch anything in my room again!"Back the

Of course, I also wished Liam and Vivi a happy marriage just like the other company employees. After that, I deleted Liam's contact information from my phone. When the plane landed, my parents personally came to pick me up from the airport. My mother, Cecilia Knox, held my hand with a distressed look on her face. "My dear daughter, look at how thin you've become studying and working so far from home!"Adam patted me on the shoulder and said, "It's good that you're home!"There was a man with broad shoulders and a narrow waist standing upright next to them. He looked slightly older than me and was wearing a three-piece suit. He had deep-set eyes, a gentle gaze, and was looking silently at me with faint warmth.I blushed unconsciously under his scorching gaze, having already guessed his identity. My parents hurriedly introduced me to him. "Mimi, this is Jayce Chandler."I reached out for a handshake, and Jayce reached out in return with his broad palm, gently shaking the tips of m
