Chapter 4

작가: Pantaloon
I said to Charlotte calmly, "Then throw me out."

Her body trembled slightly. The hand gripping my collar loosened without her realizing it.

When she saw me soaked through, with a red swelling already rising on my forehead, her expression softened.

She pulled me into the bedroom, where there were only the two of us.

Her voice sounded tired and disappointed, and she pressed it low as she struggled to keep her emotions under control.

"No matter what happened, that still doesn't give you a reason to hurt Victor. He's young. Even if he did something wrong, you should've talked to him properly. Besides, I only asked you to make dinner. Look how long it's been, and you haven't made anything. Victor only acted out because he got frustrated."

By the time she finished that sentence, her tone had clearly hardened.

It was as if she had finally found a reason to blame me, and once she had it, she started in on me.

"Gregory, I'm very disappointed in how you acted today. Even if you don't like Victor, you can at least pretend, can't you? If this keeps going and everyone ends up upset, how long do you expect it'll take before Victor agrees to let us get married again?"

I listened quietly, but the sadness in my chest only sank deeper.

Since when did our marriage depend on Victor's approval?

I had to admit, though, that Victor held a place in Charlotte's heart that no one else could touch.

My face stayed calm as I answered flatly, "I'm sorry. I understand."

The moment I apologized, a smile appeared on Charlotte's face again.

She went to the closet, found a few pieces of clothing, and handed them to me.

"I'm glad to hear that. Go out in a minute and apologize to Victor, and we'll let this whole thing slide."

My head snapped up as I looked at her.

A bitter, broken smile tugged at my mouth.

"He started this, and somehow it's all my fault? Now I have to apologize to him?"

Charlotte's face stiffened, and the calm in her voice vanished at once. Her brows drew tight, and her eyes turned painfully cold.

"I'm not discussing this with you. If you still want to live here in peace, then do exactly what I tell you. After you apologize to Victor, make dinner as fast as you can. Otherwise, get out."

With that, Charlotte turned and left the bedroom.

I stood there for a long while, a bitter smile frozen on my face.

Every word Charlotte said had cut straight through me.

But she was right. Every brick, every wall, every inch of this place belonged to Charlotte. What did any of it have to do with me?

When we were married, I could still pretend I had a right to stay here. Now that we weren't even husband and wife, what right did I have left?

If she wanted to kick me out, all it took was one sentence.

I thought back to three years ago, when my mentor, Emma Rivers, introduced us. Charlotte and I met, fell in love, and eventually got married.

Back then, Charlotte's company had just started, and she needed Emma's help. She had promised Emma with complete sincerity that wherever she was, I would always have a home.

But now, I could see that every promise had been a lie.

Feelings change. People change. The only person who wouldn't betray me was myself.

All at once, I regretted marrying Charlotte and choosing to stay home full-time to take care of her.

I had given up my career and abandoned everything I had worked for.

Now, I had become someone anyone could discard and humiliate at will.

After thinking it over, I took out my phone and shamelessly called Emma again.

Once Emma gave me her answer, I started packing my things.

A short while later, a knock sounded from the living room.

"Excuse me. Is Gregory Wells here? I'm looking for him."

When Charlotte saw a strange woman suddenly show up asking for me, her heart lurched, and a bad feeling rose in her chest.

She was just about to speak when I came out of the bedroom, pushing my suitcase behind me.

"Maeve, I'm here."

As I reached the door, Charlotte suddenly clamped a hand around my wrist, fear and panic filling her eyes.

Victor's voice shook. "You're leaving me for this man?"I frowned instinctively.I had only just sensed that something was wrong with Victor when Charlotte began speaking in a hesitant voice."Victor, whatever it is, we can talk about it when we get back. Right now, I need to clear things up with Gregory."Victor had always given in to Charlotte, but not this time. His voice came out sharp and desperate."No! Charlotte, I heard everything you just said. You can't leave me. I won't let you!"Charlotte's anger flared as well, and she shouted back."Victor, you're a grown man now. I have my own life, too. Why do you keep clinging to me? Because of you, Gregory and I have divorced eight times. When are you finally going to let me go?""Your life is mine! If he won't marry you, then I will!" Victor blurted out. Charlotte froze in shock. She stared at him in horror, as if she could hardly believe those words had come from his mouth."You're out of your mind. You have to be out o

"Are you okay?" I asked Maeve, worried."I'm fine," she said. "It's just a scratch."As she spoke, I saw the cut at the corner of her eye and the red mark starting to bleed. I turned back to Charlotte, fury flashing in my eyes as if I were looking at an enemy."Are you insane? How could you attack people out of nowhere?!"Charlotte's body trembled, and disbelief filled her eyes. There was even a wounded look on her face, as if she had been wronged."Gregory, I was protecting you, and this is what you say to me?"Her words made me laugh from pure anger. Now, she knew how to protect me?Then where had she been when Victor humiliated me and mocked me over and over? She had been Victor's accomplice, helping him hurt me."The best way you can protect me is to stay out of my sight. And remember, we're already divorced. We have nothing to do with each other anymore, so why do you keep showing up in my life and disturbing me?"Charlotte pressed her lips together, and all the color d

I didn't return a single one of Charlotte's texts or calls. Before I could put my phone away, she called again. I hadn't planned to answer, but my finger had already pressed the button out of habit.Charlotte's frantic voice came through at once."Gregory, where the hell did you go?"Why didn't you answer my calls all night? Why didn't you reply to any of my messages?"And who was the woman who picked you up last night? Why have you never told me about her? What exactly is your relationship with her?"Say something. Answer me!"I had to admit, hearing Charlotte so furious she was almost losing her mind gave me a strange sense of satisfaction. In the past, watching her and Victor stay tangled together had made me so angry that I felt sick. Now, she finally got to taste what that felt like."What does who she is have to do with you?"Charlotte, don't forget that we're already divorced. Even if I have another woman now, there's nothing wrong with that."What, you and Victor ca

Charlotte asked, "Gregory, what are you talking about? We're husband and wife! How could we be strangers?"I knew she was panicking. She couldn't even remember what she had done today.I let out a cold laugh, my mouth twisting with contempt."Charlotte, we got divorced today. We're not husband and wife anymore."The moment I said it, the unease surrounding her grew heavier.I didn't want to waste another word on her, so I turned to leave."Maeve, let's go."Maeve nodded and helped me with my bags. The instant I got into the car, Charlotte rushed toward me, unwilling to let it end like this. But Victor, sobbing miserably, grabbed hold of her."Charlotte, my face hurts so much! Look at my nose. Is it crooked? Will you take me to the hospital?"Charlotte stopped midstep. She wanted to refuse, but her body had already moved on instinct to support Victor. In the end, all she could do was shout after me."Gregory, wait for me. I'll take Victor to the hospital first, and then I'

"Gregory, what are you doing?" Charlotte asked, rattled.I pulled my hand free and looked at her calmly."I think it's pretty clear. From now on, if you want dinner, you'll have to make it yourselves."Charlotte's face froze, and unease flickered through her eyes. She opened her mouth to speak, but I had already pushed my suitcase forward and turned toward Maeve Rivers, a smile appearing on my face for the first time in a long while."It's been a while, Maeve. Sorry you had to come pick me up yourself."The coldness on Maeve's face softened, and a trace of sympathy appeared in her eyes."If things were this bad, you should've called us a long time ago. With us here, no one gets to bully you."The words were clearly aimed at Charlotte. As Maeve spoke, she even glanced in Charlotte's direction.Warmth rose in my chest. Even after all these years, Emma and Maeve still protected me the way they used to.Maeve took the suitcase from my hand."If there's nothing else, let's go.
