Chapter 10

Author: Cloud Wink
That day, someone pounded on the door.

It was Mrs. Whitmore.

Her pride was gone, and her voice shook with panic.

"Tanya, I was wrong. About everything. Please go see Ryan. He's falling apart. If you don't, he might not make it.

"He calls your name every night. He won't eat or drink."

Ryan was sick?

Why?

Before I could process it, Mom stepped in front of me, her face cold.

"When you humiliated my daughter, did you ever think this day would come? And now you're begging?

"Not a chance."

And now you're begging?"Not a chance."Mrs. Whitmore's voice trembled."Ryan is falling apart. We were wrong to treat you and your mother that way, Tanya. Take him back, and I'll give you the wedding you deserve. I'll welcome you into our family."I answered calmly."There's no need. I'm marrying someone else. Please stop coming here."Then I noticed the man standing behind her.Ryan.His face was pale, his eyes hollow with exhaustion. He looked like he'd wasted away.My heart skipped. Was this really the Ryan I knew?He sta

Third-Person POVDiana had kept Ryan locked in the house for three days.He hadn't eaten or had a drop of water. When she opened his door, she found him sitting by the window, a book open in his hands and his eyes completely blank. Her anger spiked."Are you really going to keep defying me? I knew Regina and her daughter were trouble. I never should've gone easy on Regina and kept her on as a maid. And Tanya... that girl was born to ruin everything."Ryan stayed silent. He didn't say a word.He didn't even look at her.Diana glared at him, furious and hurt."Do you have any idea how much I've done for you? I found you the best tutors, helped with every assignment, and stayed on top of everything."Ryan finally looked up.Years of resentment burned in his eyes."You didn't do it for me. You were watching me. Since I was a kid, you've controlled my friends, my choices—everything. I'm a person, not some pet you keep in a cage."Diana looked like she could barely breathe. Her

The next day, I went to our private condo alone.I planned to pack everything and walk away for good. Not long after I arrived, someone knocked.I thought it was the food delivery. But when I opened the door, two familiar faces stood there. Before they even saw me clearly, Mrs. Whitmore swung a broom."You shameless bitch! My son's getting engaged, and you still won't leave him alone!"Mom pushed forward."Mrs. Whitmore, let me handle this! You slut! Is this how your mother raised you? To go after someone else's man?"Then she froze."Tanya?"I looked up.Mom's face had gone ghost-white.Mrs. Whitmore glanced around the expensive condo with a cruel smile."So this is what you managed to get for yourself. You really know how to play men."Then she turned on Mom."This is the daughter you raised. She seduced my son. I never thought a divorced woman like you could raise someone with so little self-respect."Mom's eyes turned red.Shame and horror washed over her face.I

Mrs. Whitmore was calling.Mom instantly put on her sweetest voice."Yes, Mrs. Whitmore. Of course... Okay. I'll be there."After she hung up, she turned to me."Both families are having dinner next week to discuss the engagement. Mrs. Whitmore needs extra help, so I told her you'd come.""What?!"The night of the dinner, I followed Mom in and out of the kitchen, carrying plate after plate. Both families sat around the table, smiling and chatting like everything was perfect.Ryan watched me the entire time.Even when Yuna's father spoke to him, he barely reacted. My hands shook with anger. He was doing this on purpose. He was pissed I'd blocked him, so now he was trying to expose us in front of everyone.I kept shooting him warning looks.Stop.But Mrs. Whitmore caught it.Her eyes sharpened."Tanya, clear these dishes."Then she turned to Yuna's father, whose expression had darkened too."She's one of the maids' daughters."It was true. But the way she said it—l

The second I got home, my phone blew up.One word.[Explain.]Another text came right after.[You have five minutes.]I tossed my phone onto the couch. Why should I?Ryan had controlled everything from the start. He wouldn't even let me leave. So I ignored him. Then the calls started. One after another.I didn't dare turn off my phone. He might come back and wake the whole building again. My fingers shook as I typed.[We're done. Stop calling and texting me. You're getting married, and I'm going to find someone I can actually build a life with.]His reply came instantly.[See what happens if you do.]I ignored him and set my phone facedown. The front door opened, and Mom walked in with several bags."How'd it go with Gabriel?""Pretty well."She lit up and started gushing about what a great catch he was. Then she unpacked containers of leftovers onto the table.More food from the Whitmores.I let out a slow breath.Every time I saw it, it felt like a slap.A re

I didn't sleep at all that night. The next morning, Mom got up early for work at the Whitmore estate. As she slipped on her shoes, she asked, "Thought I heard you go out last night. Did you?"I leaned against my bedroom door, my heart skipping."No. You must've heard wrong.""Good. I've gotta go."I watched her rush around. That job had trapped both of us.It had trapped me for eight years. In the end, I couldn't hold it in."Mom... why don't you quit working for the Whitmores?"She frowned. "Why would I? Mrs. Whitmore has a temper and she's impossible to please, but she pays double what anyone else does. The benefits are great too. What's gotten into you?"I didn't dare push it. She might figure everything out.Clenching my fists, I said, "Can you ask Aunt Catlyn to set up a date with Gabriel? I'll meet him."Mom's face lit up. She grabbed her phone."That's great! You've been out of college for a long time, and you've turned down every blind date. I was starting to thi
