Chapter 1

"Was he attacked by terrorists? This place is so dangerous, but you still went out with a baby. Are you insane?" a member of the medical staff asked.

"He was probably beaten by Lilian's underworld gang. Notify the doctors immediately and prepare for emergency surgery!" another medic said.

My son, Wesley Carson, lay on the operating table. His body was mangled and covered in blood. His mouth had been sewn shut, and he was barely breathing.

The doctors could never have guessed that it was my wife, Lilian Barton, who had her people brutalize Wesley like this.

Until today, I had no idea that Lilian led an underworld gang in Teravon.

She ordered her men to beat Wesley mercilessly. While Wesley cried out in agony, she felt nothing but irritation at the noise and disgust at the sight of his blood.

"Blood on a wedding day is the worst omen. This perfect occasion has been ruined by this cursed little thing," she said.

She quickly had someone drag Wesley to the hills behind the venue, then turned to clutch another man's hand tightly. "Honey, don't worry. I'll take you to the chapel later to cleanse all this bad luck."

My heart felt like it was being torn apart. She acted as if what happened to Wesley was the greatest desecration of their wedding.

Wasn't Lilian the one who came to me every day to make Wesley's birth possible? If she had even glanced back once, she would have recognized him.

Lilian wanted Wesley to remain completely silent so that nothing would ruin their wedding.

I desperately tried to protect Wesley from Lilian's men as they beat him, but it only seemed to excite them more to torment a baby under a hundred days old. When I shouted that I was Lilian's husband, they cruelly sewed my mouth shut as well.

Back then, after Lilian married me, she clung to me every day, always telling me she loved me. We were together for eight full years. She longed for a child and sought me out every night.

When she finally became pregnant with Wesley, she even cried tears of joy. How could she be the one trying to kill Wesley now?

At that moment, Wesley lay on the cold operating table. The clatter of surgical instruments echoed around us, each sound cutting into my nerves.

If Wesley didn't survive, what would I do? Could there be any chance that Lilian would show up after seeing the message I sent her, saying Wesley had a sudden asthma attack and needed emergency care?

Just then, a familiar voice reached my ears. "Hurry! Please save my husband!"

I thought that Lilian had remembered me. I struggled to open my eyes and looked through the glass door of the operating room.

Instead, I saw Lilian cradling her new husband's wounded arm, panic written all over her face. Yet when the hospital staff tried to call her about Wesley, her phone never went through.

"Are you alright? I told you to let the men handle those things. This must hurt so much."

As Lilian spoke, her voice began to tremble. So, this was how deeply she cherished another man, enough to completely ignore her frail and sickly son. The reason I couldn't reach her was probably that she was afraid that I'd disrupt her wedding.

My entire body was bruised and battered from the beatings Lilian had ordered. I had held on until now only because Wesley's life was still in danger.

"Isn't there a doctor available to perform the surgery?" I asked.

Wesley lay in the operating room. The harsh surgical lights reflected off his bruised face, sending a chill through me. All I could do was watch him grimace in pain as his blood slowly drained away, while there was still no doctor available to operate.

"Are you still unable to reach his mother?" the doctor asked.

Without a signed consent form, the doctors didn't dare schedule a surgeon to operate on Wesley.

"There's no time to wait for paperwork. Have the surgeon begin the emergency surgery immediately," the doctor said.

My consciousness gradually faded, and the faces around me blurred. Shadowy figures flashed past me one after another, like demons from hell coming to claim Wesley's life.

Lilian's new husband heard the commotion and said in surprise, "It seems that the child who was hit today is also in this hospital."

"Why isn't he dead yet? I should have snapped his neck right there. He was so annoying," Lilian cursed viciously.

The hospital staff said that they couldn't reach Lilian. Yet the woman at the end of the hallway, cursing and wishing Wesley dead, was none other than my unreachable wife.

At that moment, the Lilian I had once loved seemed utterly despicable in my eyes.

At that moment, alarms blared from all directions."Lilian, the police are closing in," one of Lilian's subordinates said.Lilian immediately lifted me onto her back, trying to carry me away.I looked at the panic on her face and found it almost laughable. I refused, saying, "My leg is injured. I can't move.""Please, come with me," Lilian pleaded. She ignored my protests, hoisted me onto her back, and fled toward a remote valley. She moved through the area as if she knew every inch. For a moment, it looked like she might actually escape.I bit down on my tongue until it bled and spat the blood onto Lilian. "I can't take this anymore. If we keep running, I'll die."After hearing my words, Lilian stopped in her tracks. She scanned the surroundings, spotted an abandoned coffin nearby, and climbed inside with me.After a while, I heard the police closing in on us. I deliberately made a noise. "Lilian, it hurts."Lilian stared at me in disbelief, never expecting me to reveal ourse

While waiting for me, Lilian held Wesley and sat down outside the operating room. "Jack, grab a blanket before he gets cold."Everyone looked at Lilian as if she were completely insane.Wesley's body had already begun to stiffen in her arms, yet she still told someone to prepare formula. She cradled Wesley and tried to coax him as she fed him from the bottle. "Sweetheart, be good. Don't spit it out."Wesley, who was already gone, couldn't drink the formula at all. Still, no one present dared to say a word, and the atmosphere turned ice-cold.I was being resuscitated in the operating room, and all that remained was to wait for the DNA test results for Kenneth and Anna's child. Before long, the doctor responsible for the paternity test arrived with the report and handed it to Lilian with trembling hands. She passed the report down, and each subordinate read it in turn.It turned out that the child Anna was carrying truly belonged to Kenneth. Everyone was shocked by how bold Anna ha

While I was being resuscitated in the operating room, Lilian stared at Wesley in her arms, his head crushed flat. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn't make sense of it.She kept wondering why, when her car hit me earlier that day, she hadn't checked who it was and had even wished for my death. Panic gripped her as she wondered if I could ever forgive her, especially after I had called her blood filthy before I was taken into surgery. She scanned the room, searching for the one truly responsible. When Kenneth saw her in that state, he stepped forward to comfort her. "It's alright, Lily. Even if this child is gone, you can still have others in the future."But the Lilian who had always doted on Kenneth now looked utterly deranged. "Do you know I've wanted this child for eight years? Eight years! Why didn't I realize that it was Zachary back then? Why?"Suddenly, her gaze lingered on Kenneth's face. "It was you! You did this! You killed Wesley!"Lilian grabbed Kenneth by the t

Perhaps I should help Lilian remember why she didn't hear me calling her back then.I had tried to call out to her, sobbing and begging for help. But because she complained that I was too noisy, her men sewed my mouth shut with a needle and thread. Wesley, who was crying, was thrown to the ground by her men in a fit of rage.I met Lilian's gaze, my eyes filled with disgust. A cold smile spread across my lips while she teetered on the brink of madness from agony."What are you all standing around for? Do you want to die?" Lilian shouted.A flash of hurt crossed her eyes. She couldn't endure my mocking stare and raised the gun above her head, firing two shots into the ceiling. The hospital erupted instantly. Everyone rushed in a panic to push me into the operating room. The head of the department spoke up. "The patient has lost too much blood."He looked at the operating room, splattered with my blood, and let out a heavy sigh. He wanted to say that my chances were slim, but after

With a sharp crackling sound, the emerald pendant shattered into pieces across the floor. Lilian had been running back in panic, but she paused the moment her eyes landed on the pendant. She rushed over to me. The instant our eyes met, she froze in shock. "Why are you here?"Lilian studied my face repeatedly, unable to believe that I was the man she had once ordered to have his mouth sewn shut. When she realized the child in the corner, who had been crushed, was Wesley, she broke down on the spot.Tears streamed down Lilian's face as she pulled Wesley into her arms with trembling hands. "It took me eight years to have this child. I truly didn't know that it was you, Zachary!"Lilian dropped to her knees, her eyes wild with agony. She collapsed onto the floor, slapping herself in remorse and sobbing uncontrollably."Zachary Carson! How did this happen? How did it come to this?"Lilian screamed in hysteria while clutching Wesley. She had never imagined that the child she had once c

Outside the operating room, Kenneth's wound had nearly healed after being bandaged."It doesn't hurt anymore. Lily, you're so good to me," Kenneth said.He held Lilian's hand and smiled gently. "Lily, I've heard that a fetal heart can help strengthen the heart. You know I've always had palpitations.""Go take that baby's heart, dry it, and get it ready for Kenneth's treatment," Lilian said with disgust. "He already had asthma. Dying was what he deserved."Moments later, two tattooed men barged in and slammed into me with such force that I felt my limbs going numb. Despair washed over me as I watched them approach Wesley with knives.Once inside the operating room, the same lackey said to Anna, "I really think that this child is Lilian's son. Should we ask her? He looks far too much like him."Anna immediately snapped at him. "Are you stupid? Even if he were Lilian's child, he would still be nothing but an unwanted bastard. Didn't you see how frantic Lilian was over Mr. Taylor? If
