Emergency: you stole my heart

No pain, no gain. The expression on her face said it all. I knew had I had to cheer her on.

“There you go, sweetheart. I told you that you can do it, didn’t I? You are amazing dear”

Christine was involved in an accident some months back and for the first time in months she took her first steps.

“You are amazing, Christine!” I cheered again and earned a smile from Christine. I am proud to have been a part of her healing journey. It like adding a feather to my cap.

“Thank you, Doctor Meyers” Christine Appreciates. “If not for you, I wouldn’t have recovered this fast. I’m really grateful”

Aww! That was sweet. I mean, I’m awesome, aren’t I?

“Stop with the flattery.” I say acting shy.

Stop but don’t stop, I love to be praised. I mean who doesn’t ?

“Excuse me Christine, I’ll be leaving now” I said to Christine and left the examination room. I’ll just go to my office and rest a bit.

I’m relieved she’s able to walk after all this while. It’s a plus to my short list of achievements. At least, this should be able to convince Dr. Bell that I deserve that raise. I have been asking for it for quiet a while now but he keeps refusing me. If he finally decides to give me that raise, I’ll be so happy I might hug him. I might, because he’s such a stern man. I don’t think he’s such a fan of hugs.

“Charlotte” Someone calls my name from behind. I look back to see who it was that called me.

“Hi phoebe” I greeted looking back to face the nurse who just called my name.

“Doctor Bells wants to see you in his office. Asap.”

She walked off as soon as she relayed the message. I have no idea why she’s always like that, she never leaves room for small talk and always with a serious expression on her face.

Why does Doctor Bell want to see me?

I keep asking myself as I make my way to his office. I keep wondering if I caused trouble again.

Again because, the last time he called me to his office I was suspended for two weeks.

“Hey Charlotte you look beautiful today” Someone complimented as I walked past them at the counter. I was too distracted to see who it was , I only let out a smile as I walked to the head doctor’s office.

I was suspended for a trivial season if you would ask me. It was for a crime I didn’t intentionally commit. Here’s what happened, I was paired with this other doctor to take a bunch of Med school students on a tour of our hospital. There were about a score of them. The other doctor and I split them equally, he toured one half and I toured the other half.

On that fateful day, I took the students in my own half to see the blood storage area and I locked one of the students in the Ice cold room of below zero degree Celsius accidentally, reason being I didn’t want to miss the premiere of Jake Reid’s latest movie. Missing it meant having to listen to spoilers and I wanted none of that. Now tell me how is that a crime? Not like the boy died or anything. He only caught a cold at most. Hiss!

“Miss Meyers, you’ve been standing there for quite a while now. Will you please come in?”

Dr. Bell’s deep baritone voice brought me out of my reverie. He must have seen me standing outside through the transparent glass walls surrounding his office.

I adjust my blue overalls so I’ll looks presentable, I wouldn’t want Dr. Bells to admonish me regarding my uniform. I walk into his office afterwards.

“Hello Doctor Bells” I greet with a shaky voice. Something about this middle aged man keeps placing me on edge.

“Hi Doctor Meyers, Have a seat He says pointing to the seat opposite his, demarcated by large wooden desk. The wood looks like Mahogany or is it Iroko? I’ll ask Phoebe, that nurse knows everything and oh! Doctor Bell just called me Doctor Meyers! It’s the first time he’s called me that since I started working here a year ago. It’s always being Miss Meyers this, Miss Meyers that.

“Are you listening?” Dr. Bell called snapping his fingers in front of my face to draw my attention.

Oops! I must have zoned out again. Concentrate Charlotte!!!

“Ye.. yes sir” I replied shifting in my seat. Wait when did I seat?

“I said I finally agreed to give you that raise you’ve been asking for “ Dr. Bell repeated

Raise? My prayer have been answered? I finally got a salary raise! Oh Goodness.

“Whoohoo!!” I exclaimed and screamed for joy. Dr. Bells squeezes his face at my noisiness but I don’t care, I just got a raise.

Was it me or my soul? I don’t know but one of us actually hugged Doctor Bell out of excitement. His cold glare was enough to send me back to my seat though. This man is definitely emotionless.

“I’m not done yet. There’s a clause.” He says

Oh God, what clause now?

I hate clauses. When I was in med school, I took this evening job just for extra money but there was a clause to getting a raise. I had to do the dishes. Of all chores in the world, I hate doing dishes. Call me lazy, I don’t care but I hate doing dishes.

“What’s the clause?”

Gosh! I must sound like there’s a lump in my throat because that’s how I feel. Let this clause be a favorable one.

“You have to work as a family doctor for the Reyes.”

What?

Just kill me or the Reyes family will do it themselves.
