KELLY

I turned back to my vanity, where the real work was happening. My makeup and wigs were spread out like an undercover agent’s arsenal. Red lipstick to the left. Smoky palettes to the right. Three different wigs lined up like suspects in a police lineup. Tonight’s mission: a significantly darker version of Sexy Red.

I leaned close to the mirror, tilting my head this way and that. “Red lipstick screams, look at me, I’m hot. Dark lipstick screams, look at me, and you might die. Hm. Decisions, decisions…”

That’s when a knock came at my door.

“Yeah, come in,” I called absently, still holding the lipsticks up to my face.

The door opened, and in walked Danny. Jeans. Transparent white shirt that hugged his muscles too perfectly. That annoyingly casual swagger that said, I own this house, this room, and maybe your life too. My eyes swept him from head to toe, and I arched a brow. “Can I help you?”

His lips curved into that mischievous little smile that always spelled trouble.

KELLY I dropped the spoon and stood, pushing my chair back just enough to let it screech across the floor. Tracy nearly jumped out of her skin. My voice was calm, but sharp enough to slice glass. “Listen carefully. There are a few things you need to know about me. I’m very nice, I’m easygoing, and I respect people. But there are things I’ll never tolerate. One.....disrespect. Two....I don’t like being schemed against. If your boss tells you to plot against me and promises he’ll cover for you, he’s lying. He won’t save you from my wrath. I will bury you. And three...” I tapped the table for emphasis, “...I don’t joke with my health. If there’s anything wrong with this food and it harms me, no excuse in the world will save you.” Her hands trembled against her apron. “I....I assure you, ma’am, I will never disrespect you. The food is safe. If you don’t trust me, I can taste it myself. I’ll prove it.” I tilted my head. She looked like a puppy waiting to be kicked. I almost felt ba

KELLY I walked into the company like nothing had happened. No one would have guessed I’d just slapped the designer blush off the new assistant senior manager’s cheeks and threatened to gouge her tongue out. To them, I was the quiet, nerdy Kelly...the one who wore oversized glasses, dressed like a retired librarian, and carried myself like background decoration in the office. Which was fine by me. I slid into my cubicle-turned-office, balancing my food like it was a priceless jewel. The smell alone was enough to make me forgive every stress life had thrown at me since dawn. The cubicle wasn’t anything glamorous—glass walls, transparent doors, no fancy furniture. I’d chosen it that way. When I first started pretending to be a regular staff, I sat in the open-plan area, wanting to blend in with the “regular” employees. But of course, that failed spectacularly. You try blending in when every bored colleague suddenly thinks you’re their emotional support pet. “Kelly, can you l

KELLY Breakfast was sacred to me. If you wanted to see me truly lose it, just try standing between me and food in the morning. Which is exactly why, after surviving the circus at home, I decided I wasn’t about to suffer in that smelly house of his. There were no cooks, no maids, and worst of all, the stink of that “trap room” still lingered in the air. So I made a plan. Breakfast would be delivered to me at work, where at least I could eat in peace without gagging. I threw on my usual “plain Jane” look: white long-sleeved dress, black sneakers, glasses firmly in place. I looked like a sixteen-year-old intern sneaking into the building, not the actual chairman of the company. That was the point. Nobody except three board members knew the truth. To everyone else, the chairman was just some mysterious young woman who liked her privacy. If only they knew, the one quietly making them richer every night with her stock moves was the “invisible employee” who rode a bike to work. Speaking

DANNY The guard blinked at me. “No one, sir.” “No one?” My voice cut sharp. “No one, Sir.” He repeated. Then how the hell did my door end up on the floor like a crime scene? I didn’t have cameras installed...I liked my privacy, but right now, I wished I did. Because it was Kelly's word against mine, and from the smug look she gave me when she stepped out into the hall in her pajamas, hair down, glasses back on, I knew she was winning. She tilted her head. “Oh… welcome back, husband. Rough night?” I ground my teeth, heat climbing my neck. “What the hell did you do to my room?” She smiled sweetly, like butter wouldn’t melt. “What does it look like? I made myself comfortable.” Comfortable. She had broken my door, killed my heater, and claimed one of my locked rooms like it was hers by birthright. And now she was standing there, acting like I was the intruder. I wanted to roar. To tear the smugness off her face. But instead, I just stood there, nails digging into my

DANNY The wine was cold, but the laughter was colder. I sat there drenched, red spreading across my pants like a crime scene, and the whole damn room seemed to pulse with snickers. Every whisper, every chuckle became all about me. Sexy Red. My goddess, my obsession. And she’d just humiliated me in front of everyone. I forced myself to stand, spine rigid, and stalked out before someone decided to take a picture. My shoes squelched with every step, like even they were mocking me. In the restroom, I locked myself in front of the mirror. My reflection looked back at me with wide, furious eyes and damp trousers. Napkins weren’t enough to clean it; no amount of scrubbing could erase the shame. I braced my hands on the sink and glared at my reflection. “Why?” I muttered. “What the hell did I do to you?” Sexy Red had always been untouchable, radiant, perfect. She had never so much as frowned at me before. If anything, I thought she liked having me around. I paid well. I was l
