“What the hell, Brian?” Austin shoved him back, his breath catching somewhere between rage, confusion, and the undeniable heat that had been stirring inside him since the night before.

Brian stood his ground, unfazed. His hazel eyes locked onto Austin's as he smirked. “Don’t act like you didn’t want that.”

Austin stepped back, fists clenched at his sides. “You slept with my girlfriend then you stalk me and mess with my head? What kind of twisted game are you playing?”

“I’m not playing,” Brian said calmly. “I told you last night—I never wanted her. It’s always been you. I just didn’t know how to get your attention… until she gave me the perfect excuse.”

Austin turned away, his mind spiralling. He didn’t need this. His heart was still broken. He thought he was over Angela, but he wasn’t—not completely. The thought of her with Brian made his chest tighten. Clenching his fist, he punched Brian hard across the face.

Brian chuckled, rubbing his cheek.

The hallway leading to the faculty offices was quiet, lined with dusty framed photos of past engineering graduates. The floor creaked faintly beneath Austin’s sneakers as he approached the wooden door marked:"Engr. Mathew Udoh – Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering."The office door was slightly ajar. He knocked twice.“Come in,” a voice called, calm and deep.Austin stepped in and closed the door behind him.The room smelled like old paper, coffee, and the faint scent of something woody—perhaps cologne or cedar polish. Books were stacked in uneven towers on a tall wooden shelf, some spilling onto the floor. A whiteboard covered in half-erased equations stood to the left of the desk, while the blinds were drawn halfway, casting slatted shadows across the room.Behind the cluttered desk sat Mr. Mathew—tall, broad-shouldered, and dark-skinned, with a salt-and-pepper beard that gave him a stern, almost regal look. He wore round glasses perched low on his nose and was sc

“What were you doing with him?” Benjamin’s voice broke through the silence in the car, sharp and insistent. Austin sighed, his head resting against the car window. Lydia was fast asleep beside him, worn out from sugar and laughter, but Benjamin’s question kept ringing like a fire alarm. “Ben, not now.” “No! now!Austin,” Benjamin pressed. “You were smiling with him. You were laughing. What the hell was that?” We ran into each other at the school.” “That doesn’t explain the ice cream, Austin,” Benjamin snapped, arms folded tightly. “You're hanging out with the guy who is your enemy, You said it yourself he messed with you. He hates you!” Austin exhaled. He hadn’t told his friends that Brian had confessed that he liked him, not that he believes him, so what was the point of giving it any thought “His sister is friends with Lydia. I wasn’t planning a reunion, Ben. He just helped when the car wouldn’t start.” Qaqaa “Oh,” Oliver added from the driver’s seat, he teased “So n

Brian tapped the steering wheel as his car idled in front of the school gates. Children streamed out in twos and threes, laughter bouncing off the dusty pavement as parents waited on the curb or leaned against cars. It was a Monday afternoon and the sun was mellowing into soft gold.He had just replied to Lyra’s text about some Biology notes when he spotted her—Ruth. His baby sister, eleven years old, with puffy afro pigtails and a cartoon-printed backpack that seemed far too big for her frame. She had an unmissable bounce to her steps.“Ruthie!” he called out the window. She turned, spotted him, and broke into a sprint. “Brian!”She hopped in, swinging her bag into the backseat.“How was school?” he asked, ruffling her hair.“Exhausting,” she grinned. “We had P.E and Mr. Gideon made us run in the sun like we were training for the Olympics. I am so tired” she pouted Brian laughed, easing the car into park mode so they could wait for the traffic to clear. His eyes wandered through the

The garage smelled like oil and secrets. Brian leaned against the cold metal hood of his car, watching the garage like it owed him answers. He had texted Austin a lot since then, but he got no response. He lit a cigarette, exhaling slowly. He hated smoking, but the habit had a way of filling silences, especially the ones in his own head.He wasn’t supposed to fall. That wasn’t the plan.Everything about Austin had started as a game—a challenge in their first year. The smart, withdrawn guy who didn’t laugh at Brian’s jokes or fall for his charm like the others. He was untouchable. So, Brian wanted to touch. He went to wash up he had school this morning “Dad I am done fixing the car. Gotta go wash up” Brian called out on his way to his room.“Well done and thank you son “ his dad's voice echoed from the kitchen.“Don't thank me yet, old man. You have to test to see if the far works” He teased “I trust that I taught you well, Brian.” His dad laughed from the kitchen. –He hadn’t mean
