THE HOCKEY CAPTAIN’S SECRET CRUSH Eli Parker has one rule at Blackthorn University: never let Adrian Cross get under his skin. As the ruthless captain of the hockey team, Adrian is arrogant, demanding, and infuriatingly attractive, the exact kind of man Eli should stay away from. Unfortunately, they are also the university’s fiercest rivals, constantly battling for the top spot both on and off the ice. Then a housing mistake forces them to become roommates. Suddenly, Eli is seeing a side of Adrian nobody else knows. The stolen glances, the lingering touches, the midnight conversations that leave their hearts racing, and the way Adrian looks at him like he wants to cross every boundary between them. Their hatred quickly becomes a dangerous attraction neither can control. But Eli has no idea that Adrian has been secretly crushing on him for months. When their first forbidden kiss finally happens, they agree to keep their relationship hidden until the championship is over. Yet secret kisses soon become impossible to resist, and jealousy threatens to expose them. Then Eli discovers Adrian’s deepest secret: every anonymous love note he received was written by the hockey captain himself. Before they can decide what their relationship means, someone discovers their secret and threatens to destroy Adrian’s career. Now Adrian must choose between the championship he sacrificed everything for and the boy who became his greatest weakness.

Chapter 1: The Transfer's Gauge

The humidity inside the university’s indoor training complex was thick enough to taste, heavy with the scent of freshly cut synthetic turf and raw rubber. Rubber soles squeaked against the green fibers, a relentless, rhythmic sound that echoed off the high corrugated ceiling. But for Eli, the oppressive heat didn’t come from the August sun beating down on the glass skylights. It radiated entirely from the man standing twenty yards away on the center line.

Adrian Vance.

Senior, team captain, all-conference forward, and within precisely forty-five minutes of Eli’s very first practice as a transfer student, the absolute bane of his existence.

Eli wiped a mix of sweat and damp hair out of his eyes using the sleeve of his red pinnie. His chest heaved in rapid, shallow bursts, every breath feeling like drawn steam. Before moving across the state, Eli had heard all the campus rumors about Adrian. They called him an untouchable prodigy, a cold-blooded tactician who treated football like chess and had zero tolerance for anyone who couldn't match his obsessive pace.

What the rumors hadn't mentioned was the sheer, suffocating physical presence of the man.

Adrian didn't just play; he dominated the pitch by sheer force of gravity. Broad-shouldered, lean, and built like an Olympic sprinter, he moved with an effortless, predatory grace that commanded the entire field. His dark, severe hair was pushed back, soaked with sweat, and his jaw was set in a permanent, ruthless line. Worst of all, his dark eyes had been locked onto Eli from the second Eli walked through the locker room doors. Not just tracking his movement, but dissecting him, watching every step, every breath, every stretch as if trying to rip Eli’s secrets right out from under his skin.

"Move it, transfer!" Adrian’s voice cut sharp across the humid pitch, cutting cleanly through the noise of forty other players. "Or did they not teach you how to maintain a formation at your old school?"

Eli’s jaw locked so hard his teeth clicked. He glared back, refusing to offer the captain the satisfaction of a dropped gaze. "Keep running your mouth, Captain. Let’s see if you can keep up when the ball actually comes to you."

A faint, dangerous flicker crossed Adrian’s face, a sudden tightening around his eyes that made Eli’s blood spike.

The coach’s whistle shrieked, instantly restarting the high-paced scrimmage. The noise of the facility dropped away into background blur, narrowing Eli’s entire world down to the black-and-white sphere rolling across the turf.

A midfielder slid a crisp pass toward Eli’s boots. Eli collected it seamlessly on his back foot, his footwork instinctual, fluid, and fast. He planted his heel, executed a sharp step-over that sent a defending sophomore sprawling toward the sideline, and burst into the open lane heading straight for the penalty box. He felt the familiar thrill of the break, the burst of adrenaline that usually made him feel invincible.

Then a shadow surged into his peripheral vision.

Before Eli could set his foot to strike, Adrian was there. He didn't just execute a clean tackle; he threw his entire body into the gap, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed.

They collided with a heavy, chest-to-chest impact that rattled Eli all the way down to his cleats.

The sound of their impact was a dead, heavy thud that knocked the air violently out of Eli’s lungs. The ball rolled away, completely forgotten, spiraling aimlessly toward the corner flag as momentum pinned the two of them together in a tangled mess of limbs and raw friction.

Neither of them backed down. Neither of them fell.

For a long, agonizing second, time seemed to stall out entirely. The humidity of the room collapsed into the tight, agonizingly small space between their bodies. Eli was pressed flushed against Adrian, his hands instinctively coming up to plant themselves against the rigid, heat-radiating muscle of Adrian’s chest to shove him back. Underneath his palms, through the thin, damp fabric of their jerseys, Eli could feel the frantic, heavy pounding of Adrian’s heart—fast, frantic, and entirely out of rhythm for someone who looked so perpetually composed.

Adrian’s grip slammed into Eli’s hip, his long fingers digging through the fabric of Eli’s shorts, anchoring him in place with a force that bordered on possessive bruising.

Eli snapped his head up, his mouth opening to snarl an insult, to tell the captain to back the hell off, but the words died instantly in his throat.

Adrian wasn't glaring with the cold hatred Eli had expected.

His face was inches away, his dark eyes pitch-black and burning with a turbulent, unstable heat. His breath hit Eli’s lips hot, ragged, and trembling slightly as his chest heaved rhythmically against Eli’s own. Adrian’s gaze dropped from Eli’s eyes down to his mouth, tracking the rapid rise and fall of Eli’s collarbone, before sliding back up to lock onto his eyes with an intensity so heavy it felt like a physical weight pressing down on Eli’s spine.

Adrian’s fingers tightened on Eli’s hip, pulling him a fraction of an inch closer until the heat between their damp bodies felt almost nuclear. Every nerve ending along Eli’s skin spiked, a terrifying wave of static electricity rushing straight up his spine.

"You think you can just walk onto my team and take over?" Adrian murmured. His voice was low, rough, and thick with a dark, dangerous rasp that barely carried over the hum of the facility. It wasn't the tone of a captain reprimanding a teammate; it was the sound of a man trying desperately to keep his own composure from burning to the ground.

Eli’s heart hammered brutally against his ribs, hyper-aware of every single point of contact—the press of Adrian’s thighs against his, the sharp grip on his hip, the intense heat of Adrian’s chest rising and falling against his own.

"I don't think," Eli ground out, his voice dropping just as low, defying the dizzying pull pulling at his chest. "I know."

Adrian’s eyes narrowed, his gaze dropping back to Eli’s mouth for a fraction of a second, his breath hitching in his chest. The space between them felt stretched to the absolute breaking point, so thin and charged that Eli genuinely thought Adrian was going to lean down and close the tiny gap between them right there on the center line.

TWEEEEEEET!

The coach’s whistle shattered the air like breaking glass.

"Vance! Eli! Ball's dead! What are you two doing out there, dancing?"

The spell broke instantly. Adrian released his grip as if he’d been physically burned, taking a rapid step backward. The sudden absence of his warmth left Eli feeling instantly cold despite the suffocating room. Eli stumbled slightly on the rubber turf, his hip throbbing right where Adrian’s fingers had dug in, his skin flushed and burning long after the physical contact had ceased.

Adrian didn't say another word. He didn't offer a hand, nor did he look back at the ball. He simply turned his back, wiping his brow with his forearm, and jogged back toward his position, his shoulders tight and rigid.

Eli stood on the turf, his fingers brushing against his own hip, his mind spinning as he watched the captain's back. He had spent the last two weeks preparing to deal with a hostile captain who hated his guts. But as Eli touched his own racing pulse, feeling the lingering phantom heat of Adrian's touch, he realized the truth was going to be infinitely more dangerous than a simple athletic rivalry.
