Layla

The last time I’d gone away for a weekend with Harvey, I’d spent most of it pretending I wasn’t attracted to him.

This time, my suitcase was in the trunk beside his.

Rhys had invited us to spend the weekend at a resort owned by his family, a few hours outside the city. Harvey had mentioned it earlier in the week as though he were asking whether I wanted Thai food rather than inviting me into another part of his life.

“Rhys is having people up to the resort this weekend.”

I’d looked up fro

LaylaI woke to the quiet tapping of a keyboard. For several seconds, I stayed exactly where I was, warm beneath the sheets, watching Harvey work from the small table near the windows. He’d pulled on a pair of dark pants but nothing else. Morning light stretched across his bare back and shoulders as he read something on the laptop screen.“You’re trying to finish before the trail?”Harvey glanced over. “Yes.”Heat crept into my cheeks before I could stop it. He’d gotten up early to finish his work because I’d wanted to go on the trail, and he’d decided he wanted to come with me. It shouldn’t have made me as happy as it did.I pushed the covers back and crossed the room. His coffee was beside the laptop. I picked it up and took a drink.Harvey watched me. “There’s a coffee machine ten feet from you.”“This one was already made.”“It was also mine.”I took another sip before setting it down. His hand caught my wrist before I could move away.“You’re becoming a problem.”“You can make an

Rhys, Declan, Sophie, Celeste, Kate and Kate’s brother, whom I’d somehow never met.“Taylor isn’t going?”“He’s in Chicago until Sunday.”“Do you want to go?”Not We’re going.Do you want to go?“Yes.”So we went. The Morrison resort appeared beyond the trees near the edge of a wide lake, all stone, dark timber and glass overlooking water that reflected the surro

LaylaThere was nothing tentative about him after that.He lowered me onto the bed, his body settling over mine as my arms went around his shoulders. His mouth moved from mine to my neck, and when his hand slid over my waist and higher, I arched into the touch instead of wondering whether I should.I wanted this. That knowledge was becoming easier to trust.Harvey kissed the curve of my breast through the thin fabric of my bra, then lifted his head enough to look at me.I knew what he was asking.“Yes.”His fingers found the clasp. The bra loosened and disappeared somewhere beside us.For one ridiculous second, instinct made me want to cover myself.Harvey’s gaze dropped, and the way he looked at me stopped the movement before it started. He didn’t rush. His hand moved slowly over my bare waist before settling higher, and my breath caught when his palm covered my breast.I’d felt his hands on me before. Not like this. Not with nothing between us.Harvey watched my face as his thumb mo

LaylaHarvey caught up with me before I reached the top of the stairs. One moment I was holding his hand, pleased with myself for making him follow me with his hair still disordered from the elevator. The next, his fingers tightened around mine and he pulled me back toward him.I barely had time to turn before he kissed me.The kiss at Aurelia had been hungry. This one felt like everything he’d held back during dinner had finally followed us home.My clutch slipped from my hand onto the carpet. Harvey’s arm went around my waist as I rose onto my toes, sliding both hands into his hair again. His mouth moved over mine slowly at first, then harder when I pressed closer. He tasted faintly of wine and the dessert he’d spent half the evening stealing from me.When his mouth left mine and moved along my jaw, I tipped my head back.“So this is why you wanted me to stay.”Harvey’s lips brushed the sensitive place beneath my ear. “I wanted you to stay before dinner.”I smiled. “You were that co

LaylaWe stayed longer than I expected. There was no rush to finish dinner and nowhere either of us needed to be. Harvey asked about my mother and whether she was any less frightened about surgery. I told him she was trying to be, which wasn’t quite the same thing. He didn’t offer solutions, and that still mattered to me.We talked about Sophie’s birthday and the expression on Evelyn’s face when Sophie announced that she’d finally gotten me into the family after all. Harvey insisted his mother would recover.“Your aunt might not.”“Vivienne survives almost entirely on disapproval. This has probably extended her life.”I laughed hard enough that the couple at the next table glanced over.Harvey looked pleased with himself.“You shouldn’t be proud of that.”“I made you laugh.”“You insulted your aunt.”“Both things can be true.”That was Harvey. Difficult enough that I should have found him exhausting.Instead, I sat across from him wishing the evening would slow down. When we eventuall

LaylaKnowing I loved Harvey turned out to be inconvenient. It didn’t change anything between us. He was still Harvey. Still demanding, still arrogant, still perfectly capable of summoning me to his office with a two-word text as though asking politely would cause him physical pain. The problem was me.I kept looking at him.By the end of the week, he had caught me doing it enough times that I was beginning to suspect my secret wasn’t going to remain one for very long.Harvey had asked me to dinner that evening, and for once there was no work attached to it. No investment discussion. No family gathering waiting to become uncomfortable. No reason for us to pretend we were somewhere together by coincidence. An actual date.I’d gone back to Marissa’s after work to change, choosing an emerald-green silk dress I’d bought a few weeks earlier and hadn’t found an excuse to wear. It fell below my knees, fitted closely through my waist and hips, with thin straps and a softly draped neckline tha
