Zara's POV

Several hours later and I was still shuddering from relief.

If Kora had had even a single drop of magic in her ,her life would have been turned upside down in less than a second.

And there would have been nothing I could do to save her.

Sure, it wasn't my job to save her. But Kora was so weak and defenseless, I can't help but want to save her.

Suzie would blame it on my hero complex. But I still maintain, I do not have a hero complex, I just hate to see people suffer.

And if there is something I can do to save them, I would definitely do it.

And if there isn't anything I can do to save them, well, I would still try to save them.

It's called being a good human being.

I sighed as I turned off the ignition and climbed out of my car.

As I stepped into my bakery, the scent of cinnamon and sweets hit me, swirling in my head and making my lips tilt in a small smile.

This right here is my happy place. Baking made the everything in the world feel alright.

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   64: Disappearing act

Kali's POV I folded the last of my things — if they could even be called things — into a small canvas bag I’d borrowed from the storage tent. My hands shook slightly, though I told myself it was from exhaustion, not fear. The truth was harder to admit. My heart was hammering because this time, I was really going to do it. I was leaving. The satchel was pathetically light: a few clothes, a loaf of stale bread, my dagger, and the small pendant Ena gave me before I left home. It wasn’t much, but it was enough for someone who didn’t plan on looking back.Outside, the camp buzzed like a hive. The night air was thick with the scent of roasted meat and spiced wine, the glow of torches flickering against hundreds of laughing faces. Tonight was the mating moon ceremony — their biggest celebration of the year. Every wolf within miles had gathered here. And that made it the perfect time to disappear.I sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, forcing myself to breathe. If I timed it right, I co

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   63: Discovery

Zara’s POV By the time the bakery closed, the moon had risen high—round, pale, and beautiful. It hung above the rooftops like a quiet sentinel, its silver light spilling down the cobblestone streets and glinting off the windows of shops and taverns. The entire town seemed alive tonight—laughter carried through the air, mixed with the distant thrum of drums and the melodic howl of wolves welcoming the mating moon. I stood outside the bakery for a long moment, hugging my shawl tighter around my shoulders. Dija and Suzie were already changing into their festival dresses in the backroom, while Max was waiting outside, impatiently tapping his foot. He spotted me and grinned. “You’re not backing out, are you?” he asked. I smiled faintly. “Wouldn’t dream of it.” “Good,” he said, looping his arm through mine and dragging me toward the square. “Because I’m making you dance at least once tonight.” The town center was a burst of color and light. Lanterns hung from every tree and pos

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   62: To the mating ceremony!

Zara’s POV The morning light filtered through the half-drawn curtains, painting thin golden stripes across the bedspread. I sat at the vanity, trying to focus on my reflection as I brushed through my hair, but my thoughts were already elsewhere—on the way Isaac’s shoulders had stiffened when I mentioned tonight. He was standing by the wardrobe, buttoning his dark shirt, movements slow, deliberate. The faint smell of his cologne drifted through the air, familiar and grounding, yet somehow distant too. “What are you doing tonight?” I asked, setting the brush down and glancing at him through the mirror. “I thought maybe we could spend some time together.” He hesitated—barely a flicker, but I caught it. His fingers froze mid-button before he cleared his throat. “Uh… I’m working late.” His tone was too even, too rehearsed. “There’s a lot to finish up before tomorrow’s meeting. I might not be back till morning.” I turned slightly in my chair. “All night?” “Yeah,” he said, avoidi

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   61: Tour

Kali’s POV The afternoon light had a honeyed glow as Aiden and I walked beyond the training field. The clang of swords faded behind us, replaced by the chirping of birds and the rustle of leaves in the faint breeze. He walked ahead at first, hands clasped behind him in that same disciplined stance of his, like even when relaxed, he couldn’t shed the soldier in him. “So,” I said, trailing slightly behind, “you’re really going to give me the grand tour?” He threw me a sidelong glance, one brow raised. “You doubt my abilities as a guide?” “I doubt your patience,” I said with a faint smirk. That earned me the smallest, rarest sound—a quiet chuckle. “You might be right about that.” We passed the blacksmith’s forge first, where two shirtless men hammered glowing metal into shape. Sparks danced like tiny fireflies in the air. The heat from the flames brushed my skin even from a distance. “This is the heart of the camp,” Aiden explained. “Without this place, our warriors would b

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   60: Aiden to the rescue

Kali’s POV The world spun as I hit the ground, a cloud of dust rising around me. Pain shot through my ribs, sharp and fiery, but I bit down a groan. My lungs burned as I gasped for breath, every inhale scraping like sandpaper. “Had enough yet?” Vera’s voice carried above me, half mocking, half concerned. I stared up at her, blinking sweat out of my eyes. My whole body screamed in protest, but I forced my voice out, hoarse and stubborn. “No.” Vera sighed, shaking her head. “You’re going to regret this, sweetheart.” Before I could brace myself, she lunged. Her fist cut through the air, aimed squarely for my jaw— “Stop!” Aiden’s voice sliced through the training ground like a blade. Vera froze, her fist hovering inches from my face. A muscle in her arm twitched, then she slowly lowered it, smirking down at me. “You’re lucky, princess,” she said with a wink, stepping back. I lay there for a moment, panting. My arms trembled as I pushed myself upright, dirt clinging to my

  • Enslaved to the Mad Alpha   59: A little intense training

Kali’s POV My heart hadn’t stopped pounding since Zara left my room. Every thump echoed in my ears like a war drum, each beat a reminder that I was living on borrowed time. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the faint shimmer of light bleeding in through the curtains, my hands trembling in my lap. Zara had seen the bandage. She had seen the blood. Dark, thick, corrupted blood. My secret wasn’t safe anymore. For a moment, I tried to convince myself that maybe she wouldn’t tell anyone—that the kindness in her eyes meant something—but fear was a wild thing inside me. It clawed at my chest, whispering that I was fooling myself. Mama Soraya’s voice rose in my mind, harsh and cold: “Trust gets you killed, girl.” If Zara went to Lilith, I’d be executed before dawn. They’d say it was justice for practicing forbidden magic. They’d burn my body and scatter the ashes before my soul could even rest. I curled up on the bed, hugging my knees to my chest, trying to breathe through
