“I would rather die,” he said.
I felt my heart swell. I reached out and held his face, a small smile on my lips. “Nothing would ever tear us apart,” I assured him at the same time, assuring myself that we would always have each other.
He kissed both my knuckles before pulling me in for a small kiss. “You are my one true mate Kali, always remember that,” my heart fluttered at his words. “And when the time is right, we will run away together and start our lives somewhere new, away from all these drama.”
I was ready to run away anytime, any day, all Enzo needed to do was say when. Unlike Enzo, I had no one. I never met my mother or my father. Soraya was the closest thing I had to a mother and she died years ago. She had told me that my mother died while giving birth to me. And since Soraya was the servant of Alpha Maduro and his Luna Hera, that automatically made me a servant.
To the entire Red Peak pack, I was the white haired freak that no one wanted to be friends with. I was bullied because I was born with white locks. Every attempt I made at dying my hair blond or black failed and eventually I gave up trying to dye my hair and instead, I started covering my hair with a black scarf.
Eventually everyone stopped bullying me, except for Kora, Alpha Maduro’s daughter and future Luna.
Enzo was the only one who truly saw me and never bullied me. He accepted me even with my wolflessness. He was the best thing in my life. I know it would not be easy for him to leave everything, including his family, just to start afresh with me. He can take all the time he needs and I will wait until the day he is finally ready to leave.
My gaze fell on the clock behind Enzo and panic raced through me. I shot out of bed and scrambled for my clothes.
Fuck!
Hera was going to kill me for sure. I should have been home two hours ago with Kora’s clothes. Her mating ceremony was tomorrow to an unknown Alpha and those were the clothes she would be wearing. I had completely lost track of time cuddling up to Enzo.
“I am so sorry,” Enzo said. “I had completely forgotten about the time,” his forehead crinkled in worry. He knew what Kora and Hera would do to me. Heck, I still had an ugly scar on my neck from the last beating I got from Kora.
“It’s fine,” I hurriedly wrapped my hair and then turned to the couch for the dress I had carefully placed there. “God no,” I shrieked in terror.
“What is it?” Enzo asked, jumping out of bed.
I could not find the words to tell him that the dress had been ruined.
Coffee had spilled on the white dress. The cup must have fallen from the top of the shelf where Enzo left the mug.
I raised the dress for Enzo to see the ugly brown stain on the dress. Kora was definitely going to kill me for sure.
I could see the terror on Enzo’s face and it was nothing compared to the crippling fear I was feeling. I should not have come here. I should have just picked up the clothes like I was supposed to and taken back to the house. The dress was ruined. There was no getting the stain out.
“What can I do?” he asked with a sincere look on his handsome face. His brown eyes clouded with concern. But there was nothing he or anyone could do to save me.
“I’m going home,” I said almost inaudibly as I started towards the door.
“Let me come with you,” he offered as he reached for his clothes.
I shook my head. “That would only make things worse,” I tried flashing an assuring smile but failed. “I will see you later.”
If I survive.

I hurried through the hallways, my heart racing inside my chest as I got closer to Hera’s bedroom. Panic completely engulfed me as I imagined the deadly fate that awaited me. Who knows what she would lunge at me this time? Last time it was her heeled boot, this time it might be a knife.
I slowed down as I got closer to Hera’s bedroom door.
Alpha Maduro was not always around but today I could hear his voice coming from the bedroom.
“…she is all we have left,” Hera said, with a softness I could not recognize in her voice. I immediately knew she was talking about her daughter.
“We have no choice. He would destroy us in a heartbeat.”
“Then let’s give Kali to him. After all she is also your…”
“Don’t say it.”
I knew I should not be eavesdropping, but I couldn't help myself. This had something to do with the strange Alpha that was coming tomorrow for his promised mate.
I was not surprised that Hera would rather have me marry the mad Alpha than to have Kora do it.
Hera lowered her voice but I could tell she was saying something. I leaned closer to hear what she was saying but the door fell open and I fell into the room, landing on my face.
Two mistakes in one day. I was really begging for death. Before I could make it to my feet, I was yanked up by my blouse and a fist slammed into my face.
I staggered backwards as my vision blurred. I blinked severally until my vision cleared enough for me to see livid Maduro glaring at me. I made to explain, say something, anything, but I could not form any words. And then Hera shrieked.
I did not need to look at her to know why she was screaming. She saw the ruined dress.
“What did you do?” she screeched. A slap landed across my face before I could say anything. Every other thing happened so fast, before I could even process what was happening. One moment I was lifting my hand to block another incoming clap and the next moment, I was on the ground, with belt landing blows all over my body, including my face.
By the time I ran out of the bedroom, I was sore all over and my dress stained with blood.
There was only one person I could turn to, to take care of me. My Enzo.
I don’t know how I managed to make it to Enzo’s house, but by the time I got to his front door, my knees were close to giving up. I took out my own key and unlocked the door.
Color drained from my face as I stared at the horrific sight in front of me.
“Enzo?”
Zara's POV When I was a kid, I had this friend Amanda. She had the prettiest dolls and she would never shut up about them. Then on her birthday, while others played in the backyard, I had snuck upstairs to her room. I grabbed the prettiest doll I could find and stuffed into my backpack. Then I whipped around, ready to make my escape after a successful loot and there she was, standing at the door and staring at me the same way Isaac was looking at me now. With disgust. "Isaac, I..." I swallowed the lump forming in my throat, "I can explain." Fuck! "How dare you?" Isaac wasn't looking at me, he was glaring at Ike and pointing his finger at him. Ike tucked his hands into his pocket ever so casually. "Are you trying to pick a fight? With me?" The confidence in Ike's voice irked me. If I could, I would slap it off his face. But I could not afford to do that, the same way Isaac can not afford to pick a fight with Ike. Ike would snap his neck in a second. I
Zara's POV Several hours later and I was still shuddering from relief. If Kora had had even a single drop of magic in her ,her life would have been turned upside down in less than a second. And there would have been nothing I could do to save her. Sure, it wasn't my job to save her. But Kora was so weak and defenseless, I can't help but want to save her. Suzie would blame it on my hero complex. But I still maintain, I do not have a hero complex, I just hate to see people suffer. And if there is something I can do to save them, I would definitely do it.And if there isn't anything I can do to save them, well, I would still try to save them. It's called being a good human being.I sighed as I turned off the ignition and climbed out of my car. As I stepped into my bakery, the scent of cinnamon and sweets hit me, swirling in my head and making my lips tilt in a small smile. This right here is my happy place. Baking made the everything in the world feel alright.Sosa waved at me
Emmett's POV The heavy air in the throne room pressed against my skin as I sat on the throne, the weight of the crown digging into my skull like a curse I couldn’t shake. I tapped my fingers impatiently on the armrest waiting for the council to show up. Ike stood to my right side, quietly. To be fair, he had been silent ever since Lilith informed us that Kora had no magic in her. Then, with a sharp boom, the double doors flew open, crashing against the stone walls and snapping out of my thoughts. I straightened, my face set in a tight grimace. They council entered. Six of them. Cloaked in pristine white robes that flowed like spilled milk across the floor, their faces hidden in shadow of their hoods, despite the light filtering through the stained windows. I have always thought their dressing to be overly exaggerated. Just seeing them made my stomach twist. The scent of incense and arrogance followed wherever they went, and I could already feel my jaw tighten. I
Emmett's POV "Fucking hell!" I raked my fingers through my hair. "I know," Ike said. "They will be here by noon." The moment Ike had walked through the door saying he wanted to see me, I knew immediately it was news that I wouldn't like to hear. I was right. "I had tried to postpone it. To stop them from coming until later, but this morning they sent word that they would be here by noon." I nodded. I have no choice but to deal with these power hungry shadow council. "It's fine," I said, "I can deal with them." "Do you need me to be there with you?" he asked. I shrugged. "You can if you want to." "I will be there then." I started to walk away but Ike followed beside me. "What is your plan with Kora?" he asked. I knew this question would come sooner, I hoped it would come later. "Nothing." His gaze flicked to me. "You can't be serious." "But I am." Ike stopped, gripping my arm. "I think you know what must be done Em. For the future of the Shadow clan.
Kali's POV If this was a trap, I most definitely wasn't going to fall for it. Zara reached out and took both my hands in hers. "I know Ike can be a bully. And he told me everything, so there is absolutely no need to pretend to be aloof. But if that is how you want to play it, it's completely fine." I pursed my lips. Zara sighed in frustration. "I wish you would not be so quiet. I wish you would speak up for yourself." "Easy for you to say," the words were out my lips before I could stop it. I waited for a backlash or something, but Zara's eyes widened in surprise or maybe it was excitement. "Just like that. Tell me what you really want Kora. Do you want to be with Em?" What I really wanted? That was a tough ask. I have never really wanted anything, but now I wanted to run away from all this. From Ike, from Emmett and even Zara. I wanted to be free, to understand what it meant to be free and to just be. But that would just be wishful thinking. People like me are never tr
48Kora’s POVThe world came back to me in fragments, sound first.A dull ringing hummed in my ears, sharp and endless, like the echo of something I couldn’t remember. My head throbbed, a deep, pulsing ache that felt like it was splitting me open.I groaned, my throat dry. When I tried to open my eyes, the light stabbed through my skull. I flinched, shutting them again, then forced them open in slivers until the blur around me began to shape into something familiar, my room. The curtains were drawn halfway, letting in soft gold light that pooled across the sheets. And then I saw him.Emmett.His face came into focus. His eyes were tired and red rimmed, his jaw clenched tight. There was worry carved into every line of his expression, a kind of helpless fear I had never seen on before.Well, I have seen that kind of worry before but had never been directed at me. Until now.“Kora?” he breathed, relief breaking through his voice. “Hey. You’re awake.”I blinked slowly, my vision still swi
