Arlyn

I finally caught up to her in the anteroom, and I moved to intercept her, standing in her path. She tried going back the way we just came, but Reid was already there, leaning against the doorway with his legs crossed at the ankles.

“I’m late for a meeting, baby. How about we talk when I’m back?” She tried to bargain her way through, but I wasn’t going to be swayed… I refuse to be swayed.

“Answer your daughter. I think she deserves the right to know…or don’t you feel bad for withholding this information from her for so long? I mean…she practically grew up believing the wrong man was her biological father. She deserves to know her entire life had been one big lie.”

I saw something like guilt flash on my mother’s face, but then she frowned at Reid, shaking her head in denial. “You think you know everything, but the truth is that you don’t. You don’t know anything at all.”

She walked purposefully up to Reid, wearing her anger on her sleeve, but Reid was unbothered, still leaning aga

Ried I knocked on her door, restless as hell.My entire body was alert and on fire.I had a sneaking suspicion it was the alcohol, but then again, I had only had one glass of whisky.I could usually hold my liquor better than that. I heard shuffling from inside the door, and seven seconds later, the door swung open.“We need to talk.” I said without mincing my words. Her face turned a bright red.“Talk? At this hour?” She asked.“Yes.” She contemplated for a second before letting me in.The door clicked closed behind her, and I turned around as soon as I was in the middle of the room.“Is it true?” I demanded.“If what's true?” She frowned.“You and Liam are back?”“Oh… um, yes. He asked for forgiveness, and I had no choice but to. Was tired of holding a grudge.”“You can't be serious. He cheated on you!” I spat.“Well, I still hate him for that, but there's no sense holding a grudge.”She shrugged.“So, you are okay with fucking a cheating liar?”“Wait? What? No, that's not what's

Ried“Goodnight, Rivers. We'll talk more tomorrow.” I said the petite chipmunk and I had been friends since I started my PhD program. I closed her car door for her, and she smiled up at me.“Thanks, handsome.” She smiled brightly. She was such a ball of sunshine. It both irritated me and intrigued me sometimes. That's why I had easily accepted her friendship.“You're absolutely welcome.” With that, she pulled back and drove off into the night. I watched her go until her car was out of sight, then went back to my apartment. As soon as I entered, the first thing that came to my mind was her.Arlyn.Fuck.I needed to figure out a way to avoid her. She was everywhere, for fuck's sake!I wasn't expecting to see her at Too Hot to Handle today.Hell, I wasn't expecting to go there, but I didn't have a choice.Rivers and I had been working all three days, and she had dragged me there and even offered to pay. I ended up paying after all, but she'd literally say anything just to get me away

Arlyn I was hungry enough to eat a bull.Of course that was because I had not eaten for the past two days, thanks to all the assignments I had to finish. That, and the fact I had been thinking about Reid nonstop.I planned to speak with my father today.Since it was Friday, all I had to do was go visit Dad and then find a way to conduct a paternity test.It was the only way I could finally put my doubt to rest.I entered the new diner that had opened two days ago. The same diner everyone was talking about.I couldn't wait to eat something. As I stepped into the diner, I was instantly enveloped by the sweet smell of ranch.I found a seat, and a waitress instantly made her way towards me.“Hello, welcome to Too hot to handle. What can I get you?”“Um, something enough to feed two hungry bulls.” I said. The blonde blinked.“What?”“That was a joke. Um… I'd like to order fries, burgers, and wings. Extra portion for each.”“Alright. Coming right up!” "Ste," she exclaimed excitedly.I had

JaneI had been sitting in the café for almost forty minutes before I admitted the obvious truth to myself.I had no plan… None whatsoever.I knew this café because Arlyn had mentioned it in passing weeks ago; it was the place Reid sometimes worked when he wanted quiet without isolation. That alone felt ridiculous now, having to stalk an old friend for the sake of another friend without a plan in mind.I wrapped my fingers around my cup of coffee, now cold, and stared at him.Reid Branderton sat three tables away from me, angled slightly toward the window, shoulders hunched in that way men get when they are trying to make themselves smaller than their thoughts. A laptop was open in front of him, untouched for several minutes. His fingers rested on the keyboard, unmoving, while his gaze stayed fixed on nothing in particular. He looked… distracted and tired. Not the kind of tiredness that came from lack of sleep. The deeper kind. The kind that settled into bones.I swallowed.Arlyn’s fa

ArlynI kept waiting for him after the incident with the boys. That was the cruelest part, the way I eagerly watched out for him in class or how I moved back into my apartment expecting to run into him since we were practically neighbors.Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I walked into the lecture hall five minutes early and took my usual seat, my heart doing that stupid hopeful thing even though my brain somehow knew better.I would scan the front of the room, half-expecting to see Reid standing there again. But he never showed up.At first, I told myself it was a scheduling thing. PhD students were busy. He’d probably show up next lecture. Or the one after that.By the end of the second week, denial stopped working. He was never coming to fill in for the ill professor again.A new lecturer had taken over. Older and soft-spoken with kind eyes. He fumbled with the projector and joked nervously about not being as intimidating as the Ph.D. student before him, and the whole class roar

ReidSaving her should have been the end of it.A clean, sharp moment of intervention followed by distance. At least that's what I told myself. Step in if necessary. Walk away immediately after. No lingering…But rules are only useful when your body listens to your head.Mine didn’t.From the second I left her standing there, I felt off balance, like I’d stepped off solid ground into a pit. My heart wouldn’t slow, and I developed a constant migraine.I kept reviewing the scene with Arlyn on the way home. Her eyes. The way she said please. The way my name almost slipped from her mouth when she tried to thank me.That was the worst part. Not the boys. Not the confrontation. The fact that she still reached for me instinctively.I locked my apartment door and leaned my forehead against it for a long moment, breathing through my mouth like my therapist once taught me.It didn’t help.My place was quiet in the particular way that amplifies everything you don’t want to hear. Your own thought
