Chapter Thirty

The sky was a deep shade of blue-black, the sun long gone. The street lights flickered on, casting an orange hue on the pavement below as Alexander drove his car down the quiet road.

His eyes were fixed on the path ahead as he gripped the steering wheel a little tighter.

With a quick check to ensure his phone was still connected to the car's Bluetooth, he reached for it and opened his call log, clicked on Camilla's name before pressing the Call button.

After several rings, her voicemail message started to play. "You've reached Camilla," her gentle voice said. "I'm unavailable at the moment, but please leave a message, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can."

Alexander hesitated, unsure of what to say. This was the fifth time he had tried to confirm with her about when she wanted him to pick her up for her grandmother's birthday celebration, but she hadn't answered any of his calls.

With a sigh, he decided to head straight to her office and took a U-turn.
