Once we had taken seats in his study, Stefan Ford started.
"I heard you have been wanting to buy a piece of land and preparing for it for a year or two."
I raised a brow. I thought my movement was subtle. Or maybe someone was bought off by him behind my back.
"Yes, it's going to be in the auction next week."
"I can help you."
"You can?" I looked at him.
"S.A Ford Inc. is sponsoring that event this time. With my one call, the land would not be shown to others and you can keep it for yourself," Stefan Ford said.
I am confident he is not this nice.
He would never help me for nothing.
"Yes, but I have a condition that you have to fulfil first." Of course, a condition. I sneered. I did not want his help, but I wanted to see for myself how could my dear father help me.
"You have to merge S.A Ford Inc. with the Empire Group of Industries and make me have 40% authority in the company."
40%?
Stefan Ford was surely playing smart. He wanted to be merged with the company my grandfather and mother left behind for me and was also after 40% authority in the company which meant he wanted to be the next in command after me, the CEO.
Grandfather was right.
Before his death, my maternal grandfather made a will that all his business would be taken over by his daughter and after her– his maternal granddaughter, Victoria Ford.
That day when I was given the business, he called me out on his deathbed and said, "Don't get involved with your father when you officially become the CEO. That sly fox is keeping his eyes on Empire for years and now that I will no longer be here, he will try to snatch the company from you by any means, so always be 4 steps ahead of him."
"You can rest assured, Grandpa. I will never let him have the business you have made with your blood, sweat, and tears. I will forever follow what I have been taught by you."
"I believe you." My grandfather smiled and closed his eyes peacefully. After that day, he never woke up.
"You already have 7% stakes in Empire. Why do you want to be merged with it?"
7% was already a huge benefit to anyone who had something to do with the Empire. Even a 1% share would be traded for hundreds of millions.
"Because that way," Stefan Ford tried to find words, "the father-daughter bond between us will strengthen. Whenever you get stuck in a deal, I will provide you assistance as I'm much more experienced in the business world."
When I did nothing, Stefan Ford took this chance to continue coaxing me with a soft tone.
"I'm afraid people won't take my words seriously, thus this 40% authority. Relying on a senior will certainly pave the way for a young one like you. My daughter, don't you agree?"
I inhaled. I would not fall for his manipulation. He never considered me his daughter and left me to die that day. If it were not for my grandfather finding me, I would have been dead.
"If your intention is purely just to strengthen our bond, why do we need to involve our businesses, Father?" My lips curled up and I smiled, though my eyes were anything but smiling. The only reason he was being kind to me was that I had Empire in my hands.
Stefan Ford was at a loss for words. That sight made me laugh and I shook my head, getting up.
"Did you assume I don't know what is happening inside your company?"
"I don't understand, Victoria..." Father tried to laugh it out to hide his nervousness, standing up too. "Whosoever has given you the news, it is all false information."
"You thought you have everything covered up, Father, but everyone in the business world knows about your company. It's just an empty shell with no investors around anymore. Anyone who will invest in S.A Ford. will face nothing but loss."
"Did you investigate me?" My father questioned furiously. "Wait..."
He became more livid when a realisation dawned on him, "You have your men placed in my company to spy on me."
"Didn't you do the same?" I crossed my arms, a mocking glint passed my eyes. "After all, we share the same blood."
"You're being too much!"
"You only wanted the name of Empire Group of Industries to attract investors this is why you approached me." I continued saying. "It wasn't difficult to guess it."
"You will regret it, Victoria. Look what happened to your Mom. She was the same as you. You will have no one to rely on or support you. You'll be alone." Father glared at me sharply, his gentle facade no more.
Sigh, I knew it. Stefan Ford could never be the true father of mine.
"Father, I stopped relying on people the moment I was forced to grow up," I smirked and picked up my phone from the table, going out of the room.
Outside the room, I saw Kristina with a scowl on her face, arms crossed. The kind, concerned face she was showing at the dinner table was not visible anymore. Truly, birds of a feather flock together.
Not wanting to spoil my mood any longer, I moved past her.
"You don't want to help your father, someone who has brought you up? If we had known you would turn out to be like this, then–"
"He brought me up?" Stopping, I tilted my face, my voice strong and sharp. "Mind you, he was too occupied with his other family to even attend one parents-teacher meeting of mine— his legitimate eldest daughter." Mom's miserable, agony-filled face appeared before my eyes and I took a sharp breath, calming myself.
She would wait for Stefan Ford to come home for days, only to be disappointed in the end. After her death, only then I got to know the reason behind his disappearance.
"How dare you!"
Kristina's nostrils flared as she raised her hand at me, intending to slap me.
As soon as she attempted, I blocked her hand and pushed her away.
She would have attacked me again if it were not for my father. It was absolutely unbelievable how this woman changed her face right on the spot.
"Stefan, I... I'm sure Victoria didn't mean it." Kristina's voice turned soft. "I am sure you must have said something to infuriate her."
"Staying out of the home has made you mannerless that you've even forgotten how to respect your elders." Father spat.
I did not look in his direction but rather focused my attention on the woman who seemed pleased when she saw Stefan Ford angry at me.
"Drop your act already. I'm not a child who will go along with it." I made sure my voice came out as blank as possible.

"Non-alcoholic," I instructed and did not look up.
I started tapping on my phone rapidly. Setting up planners for future events in the company.
"Ma'am, we offer only–"
This time I darted my eyes at the bartender who seemed to be around eighteen or nineteen with boyish facial features.
I have not seen him before.
Where is the previous guy who knew my preference?
"She's special, Brody." A voice came behind me.
"Boss." The young bartender was shocked as he first glanced at me and then at his Boss. "You two know each other?" "She's the Vicks I told you about last time," His boss replied. His vibrant-pink spiky hair came into my view. Last time it was green, wasn't it? "I'm sorry for earlier, Ma'am." The bartender whose name was Brody, his eyes widened and he bowed, apologetic. "I d-didn't know." "That's fine. Don't bow." I nodded at him, "And about my order..." "Virgin Margarita." His boss told him on my accord. "On it." The bartender started mixing the drink at a rapid rate. Quickly, he placed the drink in front of me and scurried away. "Is he intimidated by me?" I asked. "He's new. Harry left 2 weeks ago." The Boss answered. "That British guy? He was cute." "He was depressed after not seeing you for a long time and he was making mistakes. One customer almost beat him to death, so he resigned the next day." Poor guy. He was polite. "So, finally you decided to show up, huh? Thou
7 days had passed in a blur. It was true when they said that time passes and you don't even know it when you are happy in your space. Taking out a black dress from the closet, I was alleviated. I was finding an occasion to wear it, and this current time could not be any better. "All the preparations have been done, Boss. We're waiting for your orders." I nodded, my words oozing with confidence, "It's time to get our land back." Reaching there, the first thing I did was to meet the one who allowed the land to be a part of the auction. "Nice to see you again, Mr Kingsley." "M-Miss Ford, you're here..." Douglas Kingsley let out a nervous laugh. "You indeed look busier than I thought. Might be the reason for not picking up the calls." "Haha, ...yeah. Busy, yes." I noticed how he kept averting his eyes. "Mr Kingsley, you don't seem happy after seeing me." I raised a brow. "N-No, I am! I am delighted to have you here. It's just... I'm surprised to see you attending today." "Wel
Since the room had dim light, I could not distinguish the face. 7 days had passed in a blur. It was true when they said that time passes and you don't even know it when you are happy in your space. "Lighten up already. Why are you in a sullen mood!?" When I met Sarah, she easily detected what I was keeping in me. Uncle Max was a pretty laid-back person and advised me to look forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past. But a thought that still poked my heart and mind was: My hard work was stolen, and things like this had never occurred to me. That damn Atkinson. I will scratch his handsome face if I see him ever smirking at me again. "You don't know what happened to me this weekend," I grumbled. It was a happy-sad situation I was in. "It's my show, Vicky! I'll not be able to focus if you remain sad." Sarah exclaimed, her eyes large. Sighing, I got up and grabbed her shoulders, standing right in front of her. She was cute when she tried to look taller than me. She was 5'4 and I was 5'6. "Alright, Sarah, I'll try to be positive." I showed a small smile. Sarah was my best friend and she invited me here. I should support her instead of spoiling the great atmosphere.
"Why are you smiling?" I narrowed my eyes. "Because you, Victoria Ford, are the most powerful woman I have ever seen. It's evident the board members will be afraid of you." "They respect me!" I lightly punched his arm making him wince. "Literally too." I rolled my eyes. "Why are you here in this room?" "Do you know who your partner is?" Blinking my eyes, I asked, "...I have a partner?" "Sarah." After a minute, we both sighed in unison. "God!" "I have never seen any place this packed before!" An excited Sarah hurriedly entered the room before she paused and gushed at the two of us. "You're both ready. Look at you two! Gorgeous." "Sarah, tell her who is her partner," Ben said. Judging by her sheepish expression, I could tell she had forgotten to inform me. Typical of her. "So he's my partner?" "Yeah... The gown you're wearing defines regalia, my next clothing line, and it needed a partner. I knew you don't get along with strangers, so I called Ben to accompan
I felt my head shake as the world around me spun. The familiar music was blaring. The people were busy swaying their bodies to the rhythm. I glanced at Sarah helplessly, who had started getting tipsy from one glass of her drink. I knew she could not hold her liquor. "You aren't old. Don't act like one, Vicky. Match my pace." Pouting, she grabbed my hand and started doing those moves I adored. As a minute passed, I could not help but match with her. A careless laugh escaped my mouth as I moved. The high school dance class we both used to take came to my mind. After all these years, I still had not forgotten any single step. As if it were only yesterday that we learnt dancing. A hand suddenly touched mine, and I looked up to see none other than Mr Arrogant of all. What was he doing here? Was it not much of a coincidence? First Auction. Then Sarah's Fashion Show. Now this club. As the saying goes, enemies are destined to meet on a narrow path. I kept meeting him, an
Aaron Atkinson smirked, "I thought Miss Ford's anger must have faded away after you made me spend hundreds of millions on an abandoned piece of land." "Why did you compete with me if you didn't want it in the first place?" I gritted my teeth, yet a smile remained. An abandoned piece of land? Someone was trying to have it for years, you ungrateful man. "Reasons," He said, his eyes mysterious and wicked. "Babe, where were you!" A screeching voice clashed with my ear drums. "My friends and I have been waiting for you for ages!" I watched as a woman in her twenties made her appearance and linked her arm with his, "And who might she be, darling?" Her eyes raked over me like a hawk, analysing me from head to toe. Sarah then stood beside me, as well as Jackson. A recognition passed her eyes as she pursed her lips, refraining from what she was about to say about me. Sarah and Jackson were famous among people due to their businesses. Being surrounded by famous friends is a life e
A voice I had come to be familiar with resonated in the large room. Each eye went towards the entrance door. "I apologise that I came late. I was occupied by some matters."I gripped my hands tightly, yet I did not show the frustration on my face. He was the shareholder after all this time! "Mr Atkinson!" All the people were wide-eyed as they stood up from their chairs, welcoming him, except for me. "You were the shareholder behind? What a surprise." The disgruntled tones were replaced with honeyed words. How hypocritical. "We're lucky to have you, Mr Atkinson." "Yes, yes, it's good to have you here, Mr Atkinson." "Our company must have accomplished something to receive Mr Atkinson's attention." He donned a navy blue tailored suit, walking in a dignified manner. Glancing at the whole room, he came to sit beside me on my right. His eyes locked with mine, staring at me. "It's you people who are lucky to have a hardworking and devoted CEO like Miss Ford. If she were mine, I wo
