I worked till late at night. I expected my first day at work here to be overwhelming, but I hadn't expected it to be this clumped. The meeting with Berlin’s board didn't end well. I wouldn't give them what they wanted, that's extortion. I'd rather spend money to secure a way to keep them trapped than let them manipulate me

The sky had gone remarkably dark by the time I was able to breathe

Harley strode into my office with her tab clutched to her chest. She stopped before my desk and drew her brows together “Promise you won't kill me”

“Why would I kill you? What happened Harley?” I moved my back away from the chair

“You were supposed to meet with Evan by 8 and it's…… “

I looked down at my phone and it was 9:10pm!! I also saw that I had an unread message from an unknown number. I opened it

{ Still coming around, princess? It's after 8, are you stuck in traffic?}

I dropped my phone on the desk and rubbed my temples “Why didn't I get a reminder for this, Harley? I had no idea time was flying. You know how important this is to me”

“I'm sorry, Rhea. I got caught up trying to receive some phone calls and I was finalizing the hire for a new receptionist”

“Those are excuses. This is part of your job. I didn't even know he sent a message, now I don't look serious. What's he going to think?” I looked up at her. My voice raised, but it dripped more of frustration than anger

“I'm really sorry. What if you call him and ask for a reschedule tomorrow morning”

“That'll just make me look worse. He has work to handle in the morning. And I have to be at the gala in the night” I grabbed my purse and stood up “Maybe I should skip the Gala to meet up with him”

“That's not a wise idea, Rhea. This is our company's future. We have to grab a foot here. We're currently at number 12 on the country's top list. We have to work our way to top 5 and this is our chance”

“Don't tell me what to do. This is your fault, Harley” I really really wanted to be with him. He's one of my priorities for returning to the country, then the business comes next!

“Do you have the Intel on him?”

“Yes, Rhea. I sent the file to your mail”

I nodded and walked towards the door

“I'm sorry” Harley mouthed as I moved past her

Meanwhile, towards the heart of the city, there's a space wide enough to mark a town. On it was a structure that could easily beat the white house

A car pulled into the garage amidst ten other high-end cars. A man stepped out of it and entered the house

“Hey, brother! What's up?” Elliot threw his arms wide as he barged into his brother's study

His brother didn't spare him a glance. He merely focused on the stack of paper he was reviewing “What are you doing here at this hour ? And who let you in?”

“No one would dare to stop me from coming in. I missed you brother and I came to see your face” He swirled towards the empty chair and sat on it, picking up an apple ont he basket next to him as he did

“I'm busy. Leave. You have your own place” Came the cold reply from his brother

A hearty laugh escaped Elliot’s mouth “I know you missed me too. I'm like the sun to brighten your gloomy life” He took a bite from the apple and crossed his legs against the handle of the chair “You won't believe the woman I met last night, I think she might be the one, Evan”

Evan finally looked up from the paper. If someone walked in right then, they'd have thought there was a glitch in reality. They were both mirror images of each other

Same hair colour, same outline, everything was literally the same except Evan's eyes were a bit darker than his twin brother's own, Elliot

“Another one already?” He finally replied

“Don't say it like that. This one is different”

“You say this all the time. Let's hope she lasts longer than your last record, four days”

“She's different, I can feel it. She's amazing. I just love how easily she heats up when I tease her” He took another bite and swayed his head from side to side as he hummed a tune

“I've heard that one too. Do as you wish, Elliot. So far you leave me out of it”

“She has a dimple on her left cheek, super cute” By this time, Elliot was done with his apple “You know we were supposed to meet up tonight, but she didn't show up”

“She might have figured out you'll rip her off and toss her away right after. She must be a smart one”

“That's impossible. I'm irresistible. Something must have come up, she'll come around. I won't let this one go, never”

Evan ignored him and opened his laptop. His eyes trailed over every line in the article he's reading

“If you continue like this, you might die single. You've been blessed with my good genes. Girls will give up anything to be with you, grab a hold of that. Not everyone gets that privilege”

“I won't let you continue your life like this. And because I'm your best friend and best brother, I'll help you. We'll start by going to the Gala tomorrow night”

“Still not interested”

“Come on. There will be a lot of ladies for you to pick from. Surely, you'll find your type there and maybe….. “

His words were cut off by the continuous dink from his phone. He picked it up and smiled so widely “Ohohoho. What did I tell you? She just sent two messages”

Evan closed his laptop and got up from his seat. Even their heights were the same. It was almost impossible to tell Evan and Elliot apart based on their physical appearance, except from a small detail…. Evan had a mole on his back, Elliot didn't have any

“Leave when you're ready”

Meanwhile, in Rhea’s apartment

Her hair was wet as she just stepped out of the bathroom. A towel was wrapped around her waist as she held her phone, contemplating on whether to call or text him. She wanted to apologize about standing him up

Eventually, she settled for a text

[ Hey, I'm sorry I missed tonight. I got caught up at work and completely lost track of time]

[ I feel terrible. But I promise to make it up to you. Drinks? Or another night in a hotel]

The ride was nothing like I imaginedBut grateful to the heavens, Evan was in one of his cheerful moods tonight. The car’s engine purred like a beast beneath us, yet his voice filled the air with warmth and mischief“So…” he glanced at me briefly, smirking as he maneuvered through the road “Tell me the truth. Do you secretly practice that smile in the mirror, or is it just natural-born talent?”I blinked at him, completely caught off guard “What?”“That smile you’ve been trying not to show since you got in” he teased as he tapped the steering wheel with one hand. “Don’t deny it. I saw it when I complimented your dress. You looked like you’d just won the lottery.”Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I covered my face with my hands. Was I that obvious?? “You’re ridiculous”He chuckled, making me peek between my fingers. “I’ll take that as confirmation.”The conversation flowed easily after that. He made fun of the way I tapped my fingers to the rhythm of the radio, and when I protested, he g

A few minutes later, I was outside Mrs Niles’s office, seated stiffly on the waiting chair. She had politely asked me to excuse them which to be honest, didn't bug me in any way Not anyone had the luxury of meeting and even getting entertained by Mrs Niles. She seems to live in a world of her own. Her power and connection is nothing anyone's brain can wrap around. Yet, she subjects to working under someone. Strange I shook my head off the thoughts of her and let my mind wander back to why my heart felt shredded Evan Zeeler. I felt utterly terrible with how he treated me. If he wanted our relationship to be subtle and private. Why couldn't he just say so? Why freeze me out like I'm nothing. I glanced towards the door and wondered what they were discussing. With a heavy sigh, I rose to my feet and left the building. I needed something else to take my mind off my messed up love-lifeI buried myself with work till late at night, trying all I could to keep Berlin under control. Harle

My heels clicked against the polished marble floor as I stepped out of the elevator, trying to bring my heartbeat back to normal. It was almost completely useless. My chest was still trembling from the near-kiss, from the way Evan had looked at me like I was a puzzle he wanted to unravel right there and thenStupid elevator! It could have waited a little bit longer! I bit the inside of my cheek and straightened my shoulders. I really hoped I could get my brains back into my head and not on one man!Still, my pulse betrayed me when I spotted him down the hall, striding like the world bent to his will. He didn’t glance back, not even once I exhaled shakily and looked awayFocus, Rhea. I reached the frosted glass doors at the end of the corridor. On the door was a calligraphic name - Niles Tales I knocked on the door and entered after I got a response from inside. The office smelled faintly of sandalwood and paper, an air of authority all over. A woman in her fifties, elegant and com

The elevator doors slid open with a soft dong, and I thought my heart had stopped My stomach flipped as I let my gaze linger on the broad shoulders filling the doorway, the black-colored suit hugging his fit frame, and that same perfectly sculpted face I had glued to my sensesI let my mind wander to what laid underneath his suit How freakish, ever since I had sex with him, I'd been a master at lewd thoughts. It's almost like I couldn't control myself. I curled my toes and tried to steady myself My heart tripped over itself. He looked different this morning. There's something about a suit that made him give off a different aura, somewhat stronger and stern. It's like the suit came with a different demeanorHe didn't look like the same man whose lips had stolen my breath that night. The man I had tangled myself up withTruth be told, I liked it It's….. sexyI smiled without meaning to, the corners of my lips tugging upward in a soft curve. “You” I whispered, almost playfulI wonder

“What the splitting fuck! You mean to tell me someone’s been working this hard to convince the shareholders to sell their shares to him?” Elliot’s eyes widened as he skimmed through the documents, disbelief written on his face “Whoever he is, he’s trying to acquire majority control of the company.”“He only demanded money to buy himself time,” Evan said sternly “The threat was a distraction. His real plan has been unfolding beneath our noses.”Elliot tossed the papers onto the side table, frustration boiling all over “This doesn’t add up. Whoever this bastard is, he’s playing a game he can’t win. It’s Zeeler Corporation, for crying out loud. No one just strolls in and takes a shot at it”“That’s what I thought too,” Evan muttered, his jaw tightening. “Until Xander dug up a conversation between Philip, our head shareholder, and an untraceable number. Philip’s already pledged allegiance to the unknown man. And if Philip caves, the rest will follow. He practically controls the shareholde

We both agreed to meet at that hotel. I'd refused to ride in his car because the last thing I wanted was unnecessary attention. Evan Zeeler is a big shot and paparazzis are lingering around, snooping for a scrap of gossip about himI buckled my seat belt and wanted to drive off when a sharp knock on my window startled meI turned and saw a worried Harley. Her brows were pulled together and her lips were pursed in a thin lineShit! How could I forget about HarleyI have myself a mental facepalm“Get in” I said to her as I nudged my head towards the passenger seat“Alright, spill” She dropped her bag on the back seat “What did that woman say to make you so upset?”My mind drifted to what Isla said moments ago She has no sister. She's an only child“She's my sister, Isla”That much was enough information for Harley. I had told her everything about my past. I barely kept any secret from her. She knew me inside-out. With her, I didn't need to put up any walls or fake strength. I could dro
