The day had started early and transitioned into a quiet morning. It was the third day in Julian's mansion and I was on the bed with Bethany who was eager to show me her coloring. We'd just had breakfast and the tray was still on the table.

Suddenly, she stopped. Her body froze and the coloring pen dropped from her hand.

“Bethany,” I called out.

“My head hurts,”she cried.

Before I could respond, her fingers began to tremble and very soon, she was shaking violently on the floor. Her eyes were drawn in and fluid poured from her mouth.

I screamed.

“Help! I need a doctor!”

I rushed to my phone, unsure of what to do. I didn't know if my screams had been loud enough. I dialed the emergency number. The phone hummed without any response.

I ran to her side and tried to hold her. Just then, the nanny ran in, looking frightened.

“She's having a seizure,” I said. “Get help.”

She ran out of the room, shouting at the top of her voice.

Julian arrived a few minutes later. Bethany was lying still on th

I was watching her all evening in that perfect red dress. I sipped champagne, watching her behind my mask. And I gulped it down when I saw Julian St Clair hold her possessively. The perfect time presented itself not long after. I followed her as she walked into the bathroom. I pushed the door open and she looked back. I knew she recognised me even before I removed my mask.I locked the door.“Vincenzo?” she asked.I pulled off my mask. She turned around, leaving the faucet running. "What are you doing here?”I stepped forward, taking her all in. She was breathtakingly sexy. “Venice carnivals aren't exclusive, are they?”“It's Carlos’ wedding anniversary actually,” she said, leaning against the sink. The sound of running water hitting ceramic stretched between our silence. We were both thinking about the same thing because when I covered the remaining distance between us and pulled her lips into mine, they parted immediately and a soft moan escaped from them.“How dare you dress up thi

The day was a burst of activity in the house. I had slept over at the Fonte's residence. It was Venice Carnival, and also Carlos’ wedding anniversary. His wife would be arriving from London that morning with his son. I expected a big and bold woman. Someone with authority. But the woman who I met in the living room was nothing like that. She was smallish, wearing more wool than I'd ever seen with gloves on her hands. Her perfume was a soft lavender. She stood in the sitting room, hand on her head.“Oh… the weather in Venice is a punishment for my bones.”I liked her immediately. Her son was seated, looking strange in his plaid shorts in a house that he should be familiar with. I really didn't understand the arrangement between Carlos and his family. I reached the bottom of the stairs and her curious eyes met me. She gasped suddenly.“Oh my!”I smiled. “I'm so sorry. I thought you would have been told.”“No one told me anything. Is this Maria for real?”I nodded and approached her. S

Stefan was lying beside me, the only piece of garment on him barely covering him. The night had been long as expected but a bit underwhelming. Our bed was still intact.I rolled away and sat at the edge of the bed. The smell of early morning coffee and the lingering odour of cheap beer mixed in the air. I groaned and massaged my head in circles. My clothes were arranged in a pile on an old chair. I rose up and the bed groaned.I hissed and reached for my clothes. The sun was already rising and I needed to be out before the guest house residents woke up.“Stefan,” I whispered. He stirred in his sleep. I buckled my bra and pulled up my pants.“Hey!”He rolled on his side this time and blinked his eyes open.“Is it morning already? Why are you dressing up?”I eased my top over my head and down my body. “You know how this works, Stefan."Ladies of my standing could not be found in places like this. It would ruin my image for good.He grunted. “Don't forget,” I said, watching him. “Catrin

The home of Carlos de la Fonte felt like it dropped straight out of an 18th century Italian monarchy. Tall cypress trees lined the driveway and the house stood as the most beautiful work of architecture I'd ever seen. This was the home Maria grew up in. And I was supposed to fill in her shoes. The butler was a shirt man who smiled happily when he saw me. I imagined Maria was loved by everyone in the house.“It's so good to see you again, Signora,” he said, lines folding beneath his eyes.I tried to return an equal amount of enthusiasm. “Thank you so much,” I replied, trying not to be rude and also hoping I was as sophisticated as was expected. The house keeper stood at the bottom of the staircase, smiling broadly. She spread her arms wide open as I approached her.“Welcome home, cara. I never stopped praying and believing you would return.”Her hug was the warmest I'd ever felt. It was the closest feeling to being loved by a mother. I imagined that Maria had loads of love. “He's upst

We were driving back home since Bethany had been discharged for home care until the following week.“You've not said anything about it,” I said, forcing my eyes to remain fixed on the road.He moved a little. “I'm still taking it in, Catrina. It's a lot to take in.”I nodded. He didn't need to say it, I could see the news had swept the floor of his feet. The way his eyes had turned cold, his body had stiffened. And now, silence stretched between us.I concentrated on the road thinking of this plan I had agreed to. To pretend to be Maria de la Fonte for three months was all Vincenzo was asking of to buy my freedom. This woman whom Julian had loved dearly, who suddenly disappeared six years ago. Vincenzo wanted me to spy on Carlos for three months. I didn't want to know why, but there was something about Carlos that was unsettling. The way he looked at me, and avoided my eyes when we spoke. It felt like he was hiding something. Perhaps he knew I wasn't really Maria. Perhaps he was the

I couldn't stop thinking about the test result. Something was terribly wrong. I had handled the samples myself and made sure the samples crossed were between Julian and Catrina. A positive test didn't make sense unless they were related.I scrolled through my phone looking for evidence of Catrina Lombardi before Maria's disappearance. I found zero trace of her on social media. There was just a list of graduates from a university in the US that had a Catrina Lombardi. “You don't believe it, do you?” I asked, raising my head from my phone. My neck hurt from being bent over the phone screen. She mumbled something. “I don't know, Veronica. You saw the test result too.”I pulled my knees to my chin and clasped my arm around my legs. “It's likely fake. Julian wants you to believe she's Maria. I don't trust that result, nonna.”The bed groaned slightly as she sat on it. Andrew stepped forward stiffly. “Should I request for a new bed, Lady Serafina?”She waved him off and pulled her weight o
