I Love Challenges

UNKNOWN

Stunning blue eyes stared back at me as I watched her. She was even more beautiful up close even though she wasn't wearing any make up tonight.

When she started to look dazed, I feared that she was going to pass out. To my relief, she grabbed a blanket from her closet. She seemed to have regained her composure.

"Here, you're still shivering," she said, handing it over to me. I smiled to myself and took it from her smaller hands. I didn't really need the blanket but I didn't want her to feel bad.

I increased my body heat, my clothes drying up immediately. She gasped.

She didn't look terrified, instead she looked.... curious.

'Interesting,' I thought.

"Um, you can sit down," she said, fiddling with her fingers, nervously.

I sat down on her queen sized bed and she did the same.

"I didn't think you would show up again," she said.

I still didn't say anything.

"Why did you leave like that? Did I scare you off? There are a lot of things I want to say and at the same time, I'm so nervous," she sighed but then, she paused.

"You're not saying anything. Are you okay?" She asked, cautiously.

"Why did you let me in just like that?" I asked.

"I don't know... I just- I just know that you won't hurt me," she said.

She never ceases to amaze me. My beautiful soulmate. I felt really lucky, so lucky to meet her.

"Why do you keep hiding yourself?" She suddenly asked.

"Maybe I like being mysterious," I shrugged.

"Nope, I don't think that's just it. I know you're not human and I'm pretty sure there's more to it," she speculated.

"Trust me, you don't know the half of what I am"

She smiled, leaning forward.

"I might not know what you are, but now I'm very curious," she whispered and I felt my heart flip.

As much as I wanted her all to myself, I didn't want to drag her into something she wasn't cut out for.

"Why are you so curious, kitten?" I asked

"My mother once told me that beautiful things are always hidden.... you have to uncover them to find them," she said, gazing at me, with tenderness in her eyes.

I began to grow nervous. Trust me, I never get nervous. Devon was doing something to me. Something I wasn't quite prepared for.

No one had ever called me beautiful. My own mother had abandoned me and growing up in the human world was a bit of a struggle.

"What makes you think I'm beautiful?" I said, tilting my head. She grinned, her blue eyes lighting up like a thousand stars.

"It's because.... you're hidden," she breathed, not taking her eyes off me. I suddenly felt self conscious. I felt like she could actually see right through my hood.

"Devon, you don't want to know me. Trust me, you can't handle me," I rasped and she smirked.

"I can't catch a fish but I'll certainly try. I'm used to letting others catch the fishes for me"

She moved towards her window; gazing outside, dreamily.

"I love challenges. I'll like to try my luck"

I rose to my feet and moved towards her window.

"You can change your mind now" I said.

"Too bad I don't change my decisions."

I couldn't help but smile.

She was too daring.

I wondered how that was even possible.

My bracelet started to glow golden. Lucian, my best friend, was trying to remind me that it was our cue to resume our duty as guardians.

"I take it that it's your cue to leave," Devon pointed out.

"I'm afraid so," I replied.

She gave me a smile and just as I was about to leave, she held my gloved hand.

"I'll see you again, right?" She said, gazing at me with an adorable look on her face that I couldn't resist.

"Of course, you will," I replied and she grinned.

"I never got to thank you for the pendant and the mask and the--" She said.

"I know how much you appreciate it. You don't have to thank me, love" I said and jumped out of the window, silently. I could feel her gaze on me, just before I vanished into thin air.

...

"Let me guess, you went to see our dear soulmate, again," Lucian said to me.

"For the record, she's MY soulmate not 'our' soulmate," I retorted and he laughed.

"Jeez, don't bite my head off. But dude, are you sure about this? If the council finds out about a human being your soulmate-"

"Well, you won't go about announcing it to the council, will you?" I said.

"Come on. You know I'm your bestfriend and the love of your life. Why would I do that?"

I rolled my eyes and continued walking along the streets of Paris.

"I don't get it though, I don't know why you of all people was given a human for a mate. You know quite well that in our custom, faeries are not supposed to have any relationship with humans.  Your mate is expected to be the one to take over the kingdom. The humans are different, my dear boy"

"Just quit your rambling, you're literally giving me a headache," I groaned.

Lucian pouted.

"Oh come on, you're no fun," he said, huffing.

"Wait, do you feel that?" I asked. He halted, his eyes glowing. "Yup, I can definitely feel the drop in temperature...and of course, I can see the heat signature of a blood sucking incubus twelve feet away from us" he said, taking out his double edged blade.

"Seriously, can't you ever stop rambling?" I muttered as I began to conjure a purple mist with my hands.

The incubus was growling at us now, having discarded the human he'd been feeding on.

"Here, kitty... kitty" Lucian sang. "Shut up!" I hissed.

He ignored me.

"Come on incubussy..... Come closer and have a taste of my double edged baby," he said, moving his blade with sharp speed. The incubus was definitely pissed off. He stood there, getting ready to attack. I counted under my breath. Wait for it..... wait for it.

 One....

Two...

Three...

There we go.

The incubus pounced. Lucian struck immediately, his blade slashing the incubus' throat. But, it was not enough to do collateral damage. I could feel the magic within my finger tips. The ball of energy I'd conjured, hit the incubus right in the chest and he crumpled to the ground, dead. Lucian patted my back.

"Not bad, sweetie. Not bad," he said. The human who had been the incubus' prey was awakening.

"She's not going to turn, lucky for her," he muttered.

Lucian carried the young lady and placed her right in front of a hospital, where she would be seen and treated.

Thereafter, we banished several demons back to Edom where they'd come from. If you haven't noticed by now, we're guardians that protect humans from very evil and unfriendly creatures.

"It's dawn already? Great. I'm exhausted and I need my bed right now" Lucian said, stretching his arms above his head.

"Stop being dramatic, Luke" I said, rolling my eyes.

"I'm being dramatic? Darling, you wound me," he laughed as our wings stretched out. "I really don't have the energy to argue with you" I said just as we began to fly.

He laughed harder, picking up speed. I didn't mind.

Something was on my mind.

A certain girl was all I could think of. I was distracted by thoughts of her.

*********

      DEVON

Karla and I got out of my car after I'd parked my car in the VIP parking lot. The hair at the back of my neck stood stiff and I felt like someone was secretly watching me. It was a very eery feeling.

"Dev, are you alright?" Karla asked as we walked into the school hallway.

"I'm fine," I replied.

"You look tense."

"It's nothing," I lied.

"Alright then."

Something was just not right and I could feel it.

We attended our AP Biology class together. After several hours, it was finally lunch break. Meanwhile, the feeling of being watched had grown stronger. I left the cafeteria, feeling very uneasy. I bumped into Kayden.... again but fortunately, he didn't fall.

But seriously?

Why do I keep bumping into him?

"Woah, someone looks really tense," he said to me.

"Not really. I just need to use the bathroom," I said and mentally face palmed myself.

'Seriously, Devon is that all you could come up with?' I thought.

"I'm not stopping you, princess" he said, smirking.

When I didn't move, he raised a brow.

"Changed your mind, already?" Kayden said, looking amused. I stared at him, surprised.

Was it just me or was his eyes greener than ever?

The look on his face made me feel very uneasy. Perhaps, it was because I'd been too jumpy all day.

"Uh- I have to go."

"Right," he mumbled and started to walk away while I took the opposite direction.

"Wait," I heard him say.

What now?

"I was wondering if you would like to hang out with me on Friday night?" He asked.

Wait, what?

"Are you asking me out on a date?" I asked, surprised.

"Yeah."

"I'm not- sure about that," I said and he frowned, looking disappointed.

"Look, I-I really like you and I-um- hope you'll give me a chance," he said.

When I didn't say anything, he sighed.

"What am I even doing? I'm a nerd and you're the cheerleader. You wouldn't want to date me. I'll just.... go," he mumbled.

I felt really bad.

'Dang it. I don't have a choice, do I?' I thought.

He reminded me of mystery guy. Could he be my mystery guy? Could it all be a facade?

I had to find out.

"Fine. I'll go out with you," I said and he grinned.

"Great. I'll see you on Friday night."

I watched him leave with a smile on my face.

Things just gets better and better. I went into the girls' restroom and let out a sigh.

Thoughts of a certain golden eyed boy invaded my mind and I groaned inwardly.

It happened so suddenly, I didn't have time to defend myself. Someone pushed me forward, my head colliding with the sink. I fell to the ground, my head feeling like it was going to explode. I moved backwards, my vision blurring at the edges. Panic was quickly paralysing me. My assailant struck again, smashing my ribs with his heavy boots. I let out a pained cry, twisting out of his grip. My first thought was that it was Finn. Perhaps, this was his revenge because I'd slapped and challenged him.

My vision started to clear and I was stunned to see blood red pupils staring back at me. He was deathly pale and completely hairless. He looked like something straight out of a horror movie.

He was liike a walking corpse.

Fangs and claws were glowing in the light, mocking me. Horrified, I let out a scream.
