Chapter 1

At that moment, I finally came to my senses. No matter what I did, I could never warm Alexander's heart.

He hid the truth of our mate bond for six whole years, forbade our son from calling him "Dad," and kept lingering ties with his first love. It was time to let him go.

"Cecilia, do you really wish to leave the Red Falls Pack?" Silas Kane looked surprised as he held my application form.

He was the elder of the pack. According to the rules, he had to sign off on my application to leave the pack.

"Hey, why are you leaving?" Silas asked with curiosity.

I shook my head in silence as my throat tightened up. Silas didn't press further. He chuckled as if he had already guessed the reason. "Are you going to find your son's dad?"

I had a six-year-old son. Over time, people naturally became curious about who his father was.

I could only say he was from another pack and that I just preferred to stay in Red Falls.

However, Silas was wrong. The truth was far from that.

"Fine, I've signed my approval. And you need to give this to Alpha Alexander. You can leave if he doesn't object within three days." Silas handed me a document.

I thanked Silas and took the document before heading to the meeting hall to find Alexander. A chill ran down my spine the moment I stepped through the door. My body froze in place.

Alexander was sitting in his office chair with a woman in his arms. He leaned down and whispered something into her ear. She giggled, practically melting into his embrace.

I knew who she was—Vivian Anderson, Alexander's first love. She left a few years ago for work, but now she was back.

My feet were so heavy, as though they were nailed to the ground, and I couldn't move an inch. I crumpled the application form in my hand as I clenched my hands into fists.

Silas would never believe that the real reason I was leaving Red Falls… was because of Alpha Alexander. He was my son's father.

What a cruel joke.

Six years ago, he discovered that I was his fated mate. However, he wanted to reject me because of my low status. I became pregnant with his pup after a drunken night when he lost control.

From then on, I became a scheming woman who used my pup to secure the Luna seat in his eyes. We got married in secret, and he strictly forbade me from revealing my identity to anyone.

Alexander didn't love me, and he hated hearing my son calling him "Dad." Glancing at me, Alexander furrowed his brows and spoke in an impatient tone, "Why are you here?"

I suppressed the resentment welling up within my chest and handed in my application form. "Alexander, I…"

Taking the document, he tossed it onto a towering pile of papers beside him without even looking at it and cut me off, "Perfect timing. Go and start the preparations. We'll be holding a welcome ceremony for Vivian in a few days. As for the scale, we will go with the standards of a Luna."

Probably because of my usefulness, Alexander promoted me from an Omega to his Beta. And now, he threw another assignment at me, as if I were nothing but a tool.

The standards of a Luna… Those words stabbed into my heart like a dagger. Was Alexander going to make Vivian his Luna?

My breath caught in my throat. In the end, I merely nodded numbly and turned to walk away.

I dragged my exhausted body back home. My son, Noah Smith, ran up to me and gave me a hug. "Mom!"

Seeing his innocent smile warmed my heart. I stroked his cheek gently and said, "Did you have a good day at school?"

Noah lowered his head, and his shoulders drooped. He replied in a dejected tone, "My birthday's coming up in a few days… My classmates keep asking if my dad will come…"

He looked up at me with hopeful eyes. "Mom, will Dad come?"

I never wanted my son to be drawn into the problem between me and Alexander.

I didn't want to disappoint Noah, so I tried reaching out to Alexander. However, he wouldn't answer my calls.

I opened Facebook and saw a video of Alexander attending a hunting event with Vivian. He had his arm around her waist and publicly announced that she was his partner.

They looked so comfortable and intimate with each other. That was something he had never given me before, and that was the reason he hadn't answered my calls.

I closed my eyes as tears finally rolled down my cheeks.

Enough. This would be the last time I cry for him. Very soon, I would be free to let him go completely.

After leaving the Red Falls Pack with Noah, we arrived at the Crimson Maple Pack. The Alpha here was a rare female, Diana Wells. She had noticed me when she came to negotiate business with Alexander at the time. Diana praised the extraordinary abilities I showed as a Beta. Hence, she agreed without hesitation when I asked if I could join her pack. Noah and I settled down in her pack. The wolves here were kind and welcoming. They only offered sympathy and acceptance when they learned that Noah didn't have a father, unlike our previous pack, where he had always suffered judgmental stares from others. Our life was peaceful until that morning… When a familiar figure appeared in my field of vision as I was on my way to drop Noah off at the training grounds. It was none other than Alexander! The once proud and handsome Alpha now looked like a stray dog soaked in the rain. He looked haggard and exhausted, like he had aged ten years. His eyes locked greedily on me and Noah. "Cecilia

There was only one thought in Alexander's mind. If I were here, I definitely could have handled this incident swimmingly and earned the respect of those Lunas with ease.Alexander drank himself into a stupor. Late at night, he finally stumbled home. He collapsed face-first onto the cold floor and mumbled incoherently, "Cecilia…"There was no response. Just a deathly silence reigned in the house. Vivian was still sulking. She wasn't at home, let alone taking care of a drunk. Back when Alexander used to drink like this, I would always rush over to him right away. But it was absolutely impossible now. Alexander struggled to get up for a drink of water. Suddenly, his gaze landed on Noah's sippy cup. He clutched the little cup tightly as if he were grabbing a lifeline. He froze in place, his heart aching so badly that he could hardly breathe. Alexander couldn't understand. Annoying as I was, I finally stopped bothering him anymore. Wasn't that what he wanted? Why did his heart hur

I left the Red Falls Pack completely. Alexander never marked me back then, so he couldn't track me down by scent alone. He searched the world in vain. In the end, he could only return to his office in a dark mood. As soon as he walked in, Vivian greeted him with a few elite werewolves dressed in sharp suits. She spoke cheerfully, "Alexander, I heard all about it. Cecilia ran off without a word and left you with a huge mess. "Don't worry. I brought in some professionals to help. They've served as Gammas in other packs, so they're experienced and reliable. They will take care of everything.""Got it," Alexander replied in a low and feeble voice. As the elite werewolves began handling the tasks methodically, Vivian strutted over smugly and plopped herself down on the table in front of Alexander. "Alexander, you made quite a scene just now trying to find Cecilia." She frowned and eyed him carefully. "I also heard… You let her live in your house? Don't tell me… You actually had f

Noah bowed respectfully once more. "Alpha Alexander, my mother and I will be leaving now."He tugged lightly at the hem of my clothes and signaled that it was time to go. I followed him, feeling shocked. I knew all too well how much Noah longed for his father's love. He used to call Alex "Dad" even though he never got a response. But now, he seemed so resolute, as if he was prepared to completely cut ties with his father for good.Nonetheless, I scrutinized Noah closely and noticed his small frame trembling slightly. His narrow shoulders appeared fragile and weak. I gritted my teeth as a wave of guilt and self-blame washed over me. How could Noah not be hurt? He had just… lost hope completely. Or maybe Noah was simply holding it all in so that I wouldn't feel worse. Suddenly, hurried footsteps echoed behind us. "Cecilia! Noah!" Alexander's voice called out. He caught up to us and blocked our way. "You forgot your luggage."It was only then that I remembered that I had left o

Just as Alexander was about to look at the agreement, his phone rang again. Vivian's name flashed on the phone screen. He answered the call, and her tearful voice came through the other end. "Alexander, please come quickly! My old house hasn't been lived in for so long, and the smell is making me dizzy…""I'll be right there!" Alexander's voice tensed up. He didn't even glance at the agreement I handed him. He assumed it was just another pack document that he had to sign. Alexander was already used to me handling everything for him all these years. He signed the agreement hastily and rushed out. Watching his retreating figure, I let out a cold laugh and put the agreement away. I was packing my luggage that afternoon when someone delivered a parcel to the house and said it was from Alexander. I unwrapped it and saw that it was clearly a birthday gift. Noah's eyes lit up. "Is it from Dad?"I nodded, and he opened up the box happily. However, his smile froze, and his face went

  • Escaping the Darkness Around Us   Chapter 2

A few days later, Noah still hadn't received any news from Alexander about attending his birthday party. He cried in sadness and frustration. Seeing him so sad broke my heart. I didn't care if Alexander got angry. I frantically tried to communicate with him through the mind link, called him repeatedly, and even asked other people to relay my messages in the hope that he would answer my calls. Finally, Alexander replied to my message. He agreed to come. Noah almost jumped with joy. "Dad is coming! Dad is really coming to my party!"It would be the first time Alexander had ever attended Noah's birthday party. I forced myself to perk up and cleaned the entire house until it was spotless. In the afternoon, my son's classmates arrived. The pups chatted away in curiosity about Noah's father, as no one had ever seen him. "You guys will see him soon!" Noah beamed proudly. However, my heart sank. If the other pups found out that Alpha Alexander was actually Noah's father, there would
