Chapter 4

Author: Arctic Islands
After leaving the private room, I didn't go home.

Instead, I spent the night at a nearby hotel. I couldn't bear to spend another minute in the home I'd shared with Damon for five years.

And he didn't send me a single message all night.

The next morning, after checking out, I planned to go back, pack my things, and head home.

But just before I entered the house, Yohan suddenly called. "Meredith, Mom's heart condition has flared up again. You need to come home right away..."

My breath caught. I rushed inside.

I walked straight into Damon, who was carrying Kendra's suitcase and preparing to leave.

When he saw me, he seemed relieved. As if yesterday's events were already behind us, he casually explained, "Meredith, you're back just in time. Kendra couldn't get a ticket home, so I'm not going back with you this time."

I couldn't worry about anything else. I stepped forward and grabbed his hand.

My voice trembled. "My mom's in the hospital... Can you drive me home?"

The earliest flight wasn't for another three hours. Driving on the highway was the only way to get there quickly.

"Didn't she just have a physical last month?"

I shook my head and was about to explain further when Kendra sighed beside us. "Meredith, I know you're still upset about yesterday, but there's no need to drag your family into this."

She turned to Damon, putting on an expression of reluctant surrender. "Forget it. Take her home. I'll just wait for a standby ticket."

Kendra picked up her suitcase and started to leave.

Damon hurriedly stopped her. The concern that had been on his face a moment earlier disappeared. All that remained in his eyes when he looked at me was exhaustion.

"You have so much luggage. Getting around with all those transfers to your hometown would be a hassle."

Then he turned to me. "Meredith, be reasonable. I've already booked you a ticket. You still have time to make it to the station."

I stared blankly at the screenshot of the booking he'd sent me.

A regular seat. Ten hours. The ticket had been purchased yesterday morning.

So they'd planned to travel together all along. I was the only one they'd kept in the dark.

I fought desperately to hold back my tears. "So you never intended to go home with me in the first place?"

When Damon saw how pale I'd gone, his voice softened a little. "Something came up at the last minute. Besides, I'm not going anywhere. We can still discuss the wedding when we go home at the end of the year."

He reached out to take my hand.

I forced a smile and pulled away. "Don't bother."

I turned and went inside to get my identification and luggage.

Behind me, Kendra offered a few insincere words of reconciliation. "You don't need to fight because of me. Maybe we should just forget the whole thing..."

Damon replied indifferently, "Leave her alone."

My nose stung, but I forced myself not to look back.

By the time I came out again, neither of them was at the door.

This time, I didn't hesitate. I hailed a taxi at the entrance to the apartment complex and hired it to take me all the way home.

...

Five days later, when the holiday ended, Damon hurried back, but when he opened the door, I wasn't there.

Thinking about how unusually quiet I'd been over the past few days, Damon took out his phone and messaged me.

[You're still not back?]

As soon as he sent it, a red exclamation mark appeared beside the message.

He stared at it, confused. Then he realized his calls had been blocked, too.

Finally, he rushed to my office, only to learn from the receptionist that I'd resigned long ago.

He also saw the video about my involvement in a workplace sexual harassment case. He recognized the man in the video. It was my direct supervisor.

"Regarding Ms. Valentine's allegations of sexual harassment against me, they are serious fabrications. I've handed the entire matter over to my lawyer."

"Furthermore, she resigned of her own accord..."

Damon's face turned deathly pale.

After I left, Damon never showed up at the hospital again. I assumed he'd moved on.It wasn't until a month later, when Mom was discharged and came home, that I learned he'd rented the house directly across the street from ours.Every month, he'd travel across state lines to stay there for two days.Sometimes, when I went out for a walk with my parents, I'd see him standing by his window, silently watching me. I acted as though I hadn't seen him.Brett's case was also closed a month later. He was sentenced to five years in prison. On my birthday, a text from an unfamiliar number popped up on my phone.[Happy birthday, Meredith.]I knew it was Damon. When I got home that day, there was a cake waiting by the front door. It was my favorite kind. For all five years we'd been together, he'd been by my side on every birthday, but this time, I didn't need him beside me anymore. I threw the cake into the trash. Then I lit the candles on the princess cake Yohan had made for me. The fr

I never expected Damon to follow me to the hospital.Yohan stepped in front of me, shielding me with his body. He shouted furiously at Damon, "You've got some nerve showing your face here! Damon, you son of a witch!"As he spoke, Yohan swung his fist straight into Damon's face.I thought Damon would dodge, but from beginning to end, he stood there in silence, doing nothing. He let Yohan hit him again and again.Only after Yohan had worn himself out did Damon stagger to his feet. He raised a hand and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth. His gaze remained fixed on me."Meredith..."I didn't want to disturb the other patients, and I didn't want him to wake Mom in her hospital room. When I'd rushed back on the day of the holiday, the doctors had said she was out of danger, but she still needed plenty of rest.Damon followed me outside the hospital to the flower beds.I looked at him coldly, keeping several feet between us. "What do you want?"He looked utterly exhausted.

Kendra was still in the living room, sorting through the things she'd brought home from her parents' place. When she saw Damon come out, she assumed he'd finally come around. She hurried over and slipped her arm through his."Damon, what should we have for dinner? Remember how much you liked these sausages? My mom packed a whole bunch for us..."But no matter what she said, Damon's expression remained dark.Kendra felt embarrassed. An inexplicable sense of dread began to creep over her. "Damon, what's wrong? Why are you looking at me like that...?"Damon stared at the woman in front of him. He'd known Kendra even longer than he'd known Meredith. They'd been together through high school, college, and graduation. He'd thought he knew her well enough, but only today had he realized how wrong he'd been."Can you explain what those emails are about?"A flicker of unease crossed Kendra's eyes. "Damon, what are you talking about? Those emails were sent by Meredith. How would I know an

At the bottom of Brett's statement were screenshots of several emails. The contents were so suggestive that, if Damon hadn't seen them with his own eyes, he would never have believed they had anything to do with Meredith. But the email address bore her name. He was absolutely certain of that.Damon felt thrown into confusion.Kendra sat beside him, looking disappointed. "I never thought Meredith was that kind of person...""Damon, she's really gone too far this time. How could she be with you while accepting advances from another man?"As she spoke, Kendra studied his expression. "Everyone online is saying she was playing hard to get and only filed a police report because things fell apart with Brett...""Shut up!" Damon roared, cutting her off. "Meredith isn't that kind of person."Kendra stared at him in disbelief. It was the first time Damon had ever raised his voice at her like that. A flicker of something unreadable crossed her eyes. When she spoke again, her voice was ti

Damon's hands trembled as he opened the video and watched it over and over.He couldn't believe the person being discussed was me. He couldn't believe that something so serious had happened to me and that I'd kept it from him.In his mind, I would always be the girl who came to him to complain and cry whenever her supervisor criticized her.His body stiffened as he looked at the receptionist, who was watching the drama unfold with undisguised interest.Even his voice shook when he spoke, "When... when did this happen?""It happened before Thanksgiving. I think it was the night of the twenty-second."The twenty-second...Damon furrowed his brow, trying to remember.Fragments of details and moments he'd barely noticed began resurfacing in his mind. It was the night Kendra attended her class reunion.During that phone call he abruptly cut short, I was crying desperately, terrified and helpless.
