Chapter 2

작가: Until September
Lucas's brow creased the moment he saw me. "Iris, what the hell are you doing?"

I took out the card I'd brought and set it gently beside the baby's pile of gifts.

"We were classmates for years. You've got a kid now. Shouldn't I bring something?"

A second later, an email landed in my inbox. A confidentiality agreement.

The gist was simple. If Celeste ever found out what Lucas and I had been, the privately funded specialist team treating my mother would walk.

What made my skin crawl was that my mother's name had already been filled in.

Her liver cancer had come back and spread fast, and her local oncology team had run out of standard options.

Lucas was the one who'd introduced me to Dr. Everett Reese, a specialist he knew from grad school whose group took on the impossible cases.

Under that team, my mother had finally stabilized for a while.

I'd never imagined he'd turn her treatment into a leash.

Celeste gave Lucas a playful glare.

"Why are you being so harsh? She's only trying to be nice."

She opened a velvet box with a four-leaf-clover bracelet inside, the kind that comes from one of the big houses.

"You're one of Lucas's old classmates. I'd feel bad taking a gift like that from you without giving something back."

Hannah spoke up beside her. "Just take it. Celeste has plenty of pieces like that."

Celeste smiled. "Exactly. Don't be shy about it. My husband buys me things like this constantly.

"Sometimes he'll buy a whole matching set at once. It's honestly ridiculous."

Something twisted in my chest.

The entire time we were together, Lucas acted like he was barely scraping by.

Once, out shopping, I'd stopped in front of a bag and he offered to buy it for me.

I told him no and said I'd look for a used one online, because we were saving for a house.

He'd just finished complaining that his manager had held back one of his commissions.

I looked around at our mutual friends. One by one, they found reasons to leave.

They hadn't just hidden his marriage from me. They'd watched him play poor and said nothing.

I could picture exactly how ridiculous all those years of grinding must have looked to them the second I left the room.

I took the bracelet and walked out of that hospital in a fog.

It wasn't until I got back to my hotel that it finally broke and I cried.

When Lucas and I first got together, our friends used to joke that we were two broke kids clinging to each other.

I worked through college and still carried a big share of my mother's medical bills.

Lucas seemed even worse off, stretching every dollar until it snapped.

We both believed that if we worked hard enough together, it would get easier eventually.

Back then we couldn't afford more than a twelve-dollar pizza from the place on the corner, and we'd sit there talking until they started flipping the chairs onto the tables.

After graduation he insisted on going back to Harborwick to start a company, and I took an offer in Rosebridge. We told each other we'd build it from both ends.

At the airport he held me so tight I couldn't breathe and promised that once we had a home, we'd get married.

I waited six years.

For six years I ran like a machine.

Day job, freelance at night, weekend classes whenever I could get them.

At my worst I slept about four hours a night for three straight months and nearly landed myself in the ER.

And I thought I was happy. It never crossed my mind that the whole thing I was bleeding for wasn't real.

I turned and walked out, and somebody came after me. It was Hannah. She ran until she was out of breath and grabbed my sleeve."Iris, I'm sorry. I swear I didn't know Celeste would take it that far. I thought she just wanted to scare you."I stopped and asked her, "Was it you who twisted my wrist that day?"The knife should have gone into Lucas's chest. Instead, somebody had wrenched my arm around at the last possible second and turned the blade back on me.Hannah wrestled all through high school. Fast hands were never a problem for her.I watched the color go out of her face, and I gave her back the exact words she'd given me."Hannah, even though we're close, I can't take your side just because you're my friend. You... helped them do it."Two weeks later the police formally arrested Celeste for reckless homicide and for directing others to destroy evidence. The Ashbury lawyers tried to argue it was a family dispute that got emotional, but the health department's involvement

On the screen, a group of people were crowded around my mother's hospital bed, hurling abuse at her without a pause."You're the homewrecker's mother? This is what you get. You deserve the cancer."It got uglier and uglier while my mother curled up under the blanket, so thin she barely looked like a person anymore. She couldn't hold her head up under it. Then she pushed herself up off the bed rail and walked to the window barefoot. They could see exactly what she was about to do, and not one of them backed off. They pushed harder."Go on then. If you've got the nerve, do it."A second later, my mother went out the window. The recording caught a heavy sound from below, and then screaming all down the ward.Somebody panicked and made a call, and it was Hannah's voice that came through the speaker."Calm down. The Ashburys will cover for you."The ballroom went absolutely silent. The color drained out of Celeste's face, and Hannah looked terrified.Somebody gasped. Somebody el

The light in Lucas's eyes went out."Iris, don't say that. You're angry."I yanked my hand back. The wound in my chest tore at me, and it was nothing next to the wreckage I was carrying around.First thing the next morning, I checked myself out against medical advice and flew straight to the hospital where my mother had been treated.Walter Boyd, the hospital's records and compliance manager, couldn't keep his face straight when he saw me."Ms. Caldwell, your mother's chart has been sealed. If you want copies, there's a process you'll need to go through.""Fine. I'll go through it."I took out my phone and called the state health department's patient safety office right in front of him."My name is Iris Caldwell. I'm filing a formal complaint against this hospital for destroying patient surveillance records in a case involving a death, and I'm asking your office to step in."Boyd's face went white."Ms. Caldwell, please, there's no need for that. Let's just talk."I ended th

Before the detective could answer, Lucas set a hand lightly on my shoulder."Iris, your mother died of her illness. Are you sure you're remembering it right?"He turned to the detective. "I'm sorry. She just lost her mother, and emotionally she may not be..."I slapped him across the face."What are you talking about? You told me you'd help me find out what happened to her."Lucas kept his voice patient, like he was calming down a child."I did look into it. Everything came back the same. She died of the cancer."My stomach dropped. How was that possible?Rita had video-called me. I'd seen my mother on the ground outside that hospital with my own eyes.I went through my messages with my hands shaking. The thread was empty. The video was gone. Even the call log had been wiped off my phone.I looked up at him. He was perfectly composed."Iris, you've been through too much. You need to rest.""You deleted it."He didn't deny it. "I'm sorry about your mother. But people have

Somewhere in the fog I felt someone pick me up. It was probably Lucas. His voice had a panic in it I'd never heard from him before."Iris, stay with me. Please, stay with me."The irony of it. Ten years, and the first time I heard that tone out of him was when I was the one dying. When I came around again there was a white ceiling and the smell of disinfectant.I tried to move my fingers and pain tore straight through my chest.Lucas was asleep with his head on the edge of the bed.He jolted awake the instant I moved. His eyes went red when he saw mine open."Iris, you're awake. The doctors said you almost didn't make it. Do you have any idea how scared I was?"I turned my face away. I didn't want to watch him perform."My mother's funeral. Did it happen?"Lucas was quiet for a few seconds. "She was cremated. Her ashes are at the funeral home until you can come get them."I stared at the pale ceiling and the tears came without my permission.I never even got to see her one

  • Everyone Knew but Me   Chapter 4

I was the one who'd been lied to for six years. I was the one who'd lost those years. And now I was the one the whole internet was calling a mistress. Why should I apologize?"That post of yours did real damage to Celeste. She's already putting together a defamation claim."If you don't apologize, even I won't be able to protect you."I closed my eyes. "Fine. I'll apologize."The stream filled with insults almost before it loaded.I pulled one corner of my mouth up. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't just swallow it and keep quiet."I should have taken it calmly when the boyfriend I dated for ten years turned into somebody else's husband. What's six years of being made a fool of? You wear it and you move on."Lucas killed the stream before I could get any further. But the clips were already out, and the tags calling Celeste the actual other woman were already trending.Lucas laughed once, furious. "Iris. Don't make me regret this for you."A chill went up the back of my neck.T
