Chapter 3

작가: Until September
Lucas came to my hotel that evening.

My eyes went hot the second I saw him.

"Why did you lie to me?"

If he'd told me the truth years ago, I wouldn't have worked myself sick trying to buy a place, and I wouldn't have promised my mother I'd finally bring home with my boyfriend.

Lucas held out a bank card.

"Iris, there's a quarter million dollars on this. The PIN is your birthday. Call it compensation.

"Celeste and I - it was arranged between the families. There's a lot I don't get to control."

For years he'd kept up the broke act and never sent me more than a couple hundred dollars at a time. Now he handed over a fortune without blinking.

I looked at the face I'd loved for ten years and felt every bit of that love come apart.

Something like regret moved through his eyes. "If you want, you can still stay with me.

"You can act as if nothing happened. We can go back to how it was, as long as you don't take it to Celeste."

My answer was a slap across his face.

Lucas worked his jaw where I'd hit him, and his face went dark.

"I'll admit I handled this badly, but I do care about you. Haven't I been good to you all these years?

"I paid for your mother's treatment. I covered your rent in Rosebridge. Even that project that got you promoted-I made that call for you.

"Stay with me, and I'll give you thirty thousand a month. Take your pick of any property I own."

Everything I thought I'd clawed out of the world myself had his fingerprints all over it.

He kept saying he cared about me while asking me to be the other woman in somebody else's marriage.

I threw him out. That same night I packed and decided I was done with Harborwick.

I was walking up to security at the airport when someone threw a bottle of water in my face.

"You're the one who went after my sister's husband? Do you have no shame?"

I stood there soaked in the middle of the terminal, and I could feel every pair of eyes on me.

Hannah was standing off to one side looking uncomfortable, and I asked her whether she thought I was the other woman too.

Hannah closed her eyes.

"Iris, even though we're close, I can't take your side just because you're my friend. You... are the other woman.

"Celeste is innocent in this. You can't wreck somebody's family."

The crowd started stirring, and somebody uploaded a video.

Within minutes strangers were calling me a homewrecker. My name, my university, and my employer were posted publicly for anyone to use.

My phone got hot in my hand from the flood of abusive calls and messages.

HR called me from work.

"Iris, don't come in for now. Wait until you hear from us."

Then the caregiver looking after my mother called.

"Ms. Caldwell, the specialist team is pulling out. They said you crossed someone you shouldn't have."

My mind went blank, and I called Lucas with my hands shaking.

"Why are you doing this to me?"

I could hear an argument on his end. He snarled into the phone that I'd brought this on myself, that Celeste knew I existed now, and that he'd warned me.

He hung up. With the abuse piling up online, I put together a timeline of my ten years with Lucas and posted it to prove I'd never knowingly been anyone's mistress.

It got mass-reported inside the hour, and then my account was gone.

For the first time in my life I understood how laughable it is to fight back against that kind of power.

Lucas called again.

"Go live and apologize to Celeste. She'll forgive you and we can keep going.

"My offer hasn't changed. You're smart, Iris. You know which way to go here."

I turned and walked out, and somebody came after me. It was Hannah. She ran until she was out of breath and grabbed my sleeve."Iris, I'm sorry. I swear I didn't know Celeste would take it that far. I thought she just wanted to scare you."I stopped and asked her, "Was it you who twisted my wrist that day?"The knife should have gone into Lucas's chest. Instead, somebody had wrenched my arm around at the last possible second and turned the blade back on me.Hannah wrestled all through high school. Fast hands were never a problem for her.I watched the color go out of her face, and I gave her back the exact words she'd given me."Hannah, even though we're close, I can't take your side just because you're my friend. You... helped them do it."Two weeks later the police formally arrested Celeste for reckless homicide and for directing others to destroy evidence. The Ashbury lawyers tried to argue it was a family dispute that got emotional, but the health department's involvement

On the screen, a group of people were crowded around my mother's hospital bed, hurling abuse at her without a pause."You're the homewrecker's mother? This is what you get. You deserve the cancer."It got uglier and uglier while my mother curled up under the blanket, so thin she barely looked like a person anymore. She couldn't hold her head up under it. Then she pushed herself up off the bed rail and walked to the window barefoot. They could see exactly what she was about to do, and not one of them backed off. They pushed harder."Go on then. If you've got the nerve, do it."A second later, my mother went out the window. The recording caught a heavy sound from below, and then screaming all down the ward.Somebody panicked and made a call, and it was Hannah's voice that came through the speaker."Calm down. The Ashburys will cover for you."The ballroom went absolutely silent. The color drained out of Celeste's face, and Hannah looked terrified.Somebody gasped. Somebody el

The light in Lucas's eyes went out."Iris, don't say that. You're angry."I yanked my hand back. The wound in my chest tore at me, and it was nothing next to the wreckage I was carrying around.First thing the next morning, I checked myself out against medical advice and flew straight to the hospital where my mother had been treated.Walter Boyd, the hospital's records and compliance manager, couldn't keep his face straight when he saw me."Ms. Caldwell, your mother's chart has been sealed. If you want copies, there's a process you'll need to go through.""Fine. I'll go through it."I took out my phone and called the state health department's patient safety office right in front of him."My name is Iris Caldwell. I'm filing a formal complaint against this hospital for destroying patient surveillance records in a case involving a death, and I'm asking your office to step in."Boyd's face went white."Ms. Caldwell, please, there's no need for that. Let's just talk."I ended th

Before the detective could answer, Lucas set a hand lightly on my shoulder."Iris, your mother died of her illness. Are you sure you're remembering it right?"He turned to the detective. "I'm sorry. She just lost her mother, and emotionally she may not be..."I slapped him across the face."What are you talking about? You told me you'd help me find out what happened to her."Lucas kept his voice patient, like he was calming down a child."I did look into it. Everything came back the same. She died of the cancer."My stomach dropped. How was that possible?Rita had video-called me. I'd seen my mother on the ground outside that hospital with my own eyes.I went through my messages with my hands shaking. The thread was empty. The video was gone. Even the call log had been wiped off my phone.I looked up at him. He was perfectly composed."Iris, you've been through too much. You need to rest.""You deleted it."He didn't deny it. "I'm sorry about your mother. But people have

Somewhere in the fog I felt someone pick me up. It was probably Lucas. His voice had a panic in it I'd never heard from him before."Iris, stay with me. Please, stay with me."The irony of it. Ten years, and the first time I heard that tone out of him was when I was the one dying. When I came around again there was a white ceiling and the smell of disinfectant.I tried to move my fingers and pain tore straight through my chest.Lucas was asleep with his head on the edge of the bed.He jolted awake the instant I moved. His eyes went red when he saw mine open."Iris, you're awake. The doctors said you almost didn't make it. Do you have any idea how scared I was?"I turned my face away. I didn't want to watch him perform."My mother's funeral. Did it happen?"Lucas was quiet for a few seconds. "She was cremated. Her ashes are at the funeral home until you can come get them."I stared at the pale ceiling and the tears came without my permission.I never even got to see her one

  • Everyone Knew but Me   Chapter 4

I was the one who'd been lied to for six years. I was the one who'd lost those years. And now I was the one the whole internet was calling a mistress. Why should I apologize?"That post of yours did real damage to Celeste. She's already putting together a defamation claim."If you don't apologize, even I won't be able to protect you."I closed my eyes. "Fine. I'll apologize."The stream filled with insults almost before it loaded.I pulled one corner of my mouth up. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't just swallow it and keep quiet."I should have taken it calmly when the boyfriend I dated for ten years turned into somebody else's husband. What's six years of being made a fool of? You wear it and you move on."Lucas killed the stream before I could get any further. But the clips were already out, and the tags calling Celeste the actual other woman were already trending.Lucas laughed once, furious. "Iris. Don't make me regret this for you."A chill went up the back of my neck.T
