Chapter 1

"Hey, the college girl last night was really good. She only charged 100 dollars per session. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll drink to that."

The all-too-familiar voice came through the receiver. He was my boyfriend of six years.

My hands, which were busy with laundry, froze. Trembling, I ended the call.

Eli Daugherty had cheated on me. Just a moment ago, he had said on the phone, "I'll be back early, sweetheart."

A second later…

"Mom," my daughter cried out in the living room, adding to my distress.

Eli and I had been dating since high school. At 21 years old, I broke up with him after discovering that he was flirting with other women.

One month later, I found out that I was pregnant. The doctor had told me that if I didn't keep this baby, it would be hard to conceive again, especially when I had already lost a child with him when I was 19.

I contacted Eli again, and he was overjoyed. He appeared in front of me within an hour after the call.

I sat on the couch as he knelt before me, crying and begging me to keep the baby. He promised to be a good father. Not wanting to miss out on the chance of being a mother, I agreed.

Since he was underage, we couldn't get a marriage certificate, so we had a simple wedding instead. I moved into his house, but his parents treated me like a maid who worked for free.

Mom was busy with her new family and had no time for me. So, I spent my entire pregnancy taking care of the laundry and cooking.

When our daughter was born, Eli was there, bawling his eyes out. I believed that all the hardships I had endured were worth it.

The sound of the door closing signaled Eli's return. Wiping away my tears, I decided to confront him directly.

"Honey, I'm back," he said. He had a smile on his face, just like when I first met him.

I spoke bluntly, calmly recounting what I had heard on the phone. He got angry and accused me of wrongly blaming an innocent person.

When I asked for his phone, he hesitated and kept making excuses. Knowing him well over the years, I recognized this reaction as confirmation.

I laughed bitterly and questioned, "Is it because I refuse to sleep with you?"

"I'm only 22. If you can't satisfy me, what's wrong with finding someone who can?" He stormed out and slammed the door behind him.

I sat on the couch, unable to sleep all night.

At dawn, a friend request with a woman's profile picture popped up on social media. Within ten seconds, messages started flooding in.

A photo appeared, showing a woman with bare shoulders. Next to her was Eli, sound asleep.

"He will never marry you. So what if you have a daughter with him? We made love all night, and he just fell asleep. Eli told me that he despises you and finds you nauseating."

Although I knew that he had cheated, I never expected him not even to give me a proper explanation.

The photo made me retch uncontrollably. Six years of love had just turned into nothing right at that moment.

Two years passed in the blink of an eye. Hazel was now four years old.Within my means, I gave her the best of everything, making up for the regrets of my own childhood. My so-called younger brother, who had no blood relation to me, became addicted to gambling. My uncle also lost everything trying to cover his debts.Mom asked me for money, and I calmly said, "I have no money."She took me to court, demanding a lump sum payment for all the child support she had spent on me before I turned 18. She didn't get what she wanted.Meanwhile, Eli was released from prison. When he found out that Beatrix had already run away, he turned back to look for me.Somehow, he had gotten a hold of my address. When I saw him again, he looked far older, probably worn down by life. He was holding the child he had with Beatrix. Although he was still in his 20s, he looked like a man in his mid-30s."Keri, can we start over?" His tone had no trace of sincerity, no genuine plea. After everything that ha

"Attention, please!" I shouted.I took a sip of water to clear my throat and spoke at an unhurried pace. "Apologies for disturbing your meal. This lovely lady here is talking about Eli Daugherty, my husband. Oh, wait, I mean, ex-husband."She was the mistress who came between our marriage. Back when I still lived in that house, she waltzed in with her luggage like she owned the place. Funny enough, I even ended up taking care of her for a while."I deliberately paused, letting the suspense build. The customers leaned in, waiting for me to continue.Beatrix tried to stand up and slip away, but I pushed her back into the chair and smiled warmly. "Bix, you're pregnant. Why don't you take a seat?"She struggled to break free, but I held her down. Now that everyone knew that she was the mistress, they looked at her with eyes filled with contempt.I pretended to wipe away tears and added, "When I left with my daughter, Eli didn't give us a single cent. And after I left, dear Beatrix h

Other than this house, Eli had no savings. Now that half of it belonged to me, the only option was to auction it off and give me my share.Afraid that Beatrix would take the money and leave before he got out of prison, he handed everything over to his father. Andrew happily took the money, sent Amy to a cheap nursing home, divorced her, and ran off with Silvia.Beatrix, the newlywed wife, didn't get a single cent. The next day, I was swamped with work at the restaurant. Beatrix, looking utterly exhausted, stumbled in. Her eyes were bloodshot, her hair a mess, and her once-polished nails chipped beyond recognition. The moment she entered, she dropped to her knees with a thud, with tears streaming down her face. She sobbed, "Keri, I asked around. This restaurant is yours. I just married Eli, and you personally sent him to jail. Please, have mercy on me. The money to organize our wedding reception and the wedding gifts—it was all borrowed from relatives."I'm still pregnant with his

Amy struggled to sit up as she locked her wrinkled eyes onto me with a fierce glare. It was as if she wanted to tear me apart and swallow me whole. No matter how much she tried, though, she couldn't get up.I laughed loudly and said, "Why don't you get your new daughter-in-law to serve you?"Ever since Amy returned from the hospital, Beatrix had often called her a burden right to her face. At first, Eli would say a few words to stop her, but eventually, he didn't bother.Maybe, deep down, he also believed that his mother was a burden.Amy lay on the bed with wide eyes, looking absolutely pitiful.I sneered. "So when it happens to you, you suddenly can't take it, can you?"She shut her eyes in despair. I put the cup back on the bedside table, clapped my hands satisfactorily, and walked out.The lawyer had already wrapped up the discussion. Beatrix sat on the couch as if life had drained from her."Ms. Bass, you have been granted custody of Hazel Daugherty," the lawyer said. "Th

Eli's eldest aunt stepped forward and pulled Amy aside. She said, "Come on, Amy. What man in this world doesn't cheat? Just turn a blind eye, and it'll pass."The words sounded all too familiar. Amy wanted to argue, but Eli's second aunt spoke first. "It's normal for men to have their fun outside. You should be grateful as long as he doesn't bring back any disease!"I pushed through the crowd, mimicking their tone as I lectured, "Amy, back when Eli was fooling around with other women, it was your money that funded him, wasn't it? "It must be because you couldn't satisfy your husband, so he had to sleep with Silvia instead. You really should learn from me. I even let Eli bring Bix home! You should take after me."She raised a trembling hand and pointed at me. "You…"I smiled sweetly at her and asked, "Amy, don't you agree?" She couldn't hold it in any longer and collapsed straight backward."Mom!" Eli's panicked voice rang out as chaos erupted.See? One would never know how much

Beatrix's wedding reception was held in extravagant grandeur. It took place at the city's finest restaurant, with the most expensive banquet. She also received wedding gifts worth 180 thousand dollars. The venue was adorned with fresh pink roses. As the wedding march played, she slowly walked in, dressed in a stunning white gown. Her face radiated happiness. The moment Eli took her hand, he cried."Will the bride and groom now exchange rings?" the officiator asked. Eli picked up the ring and slid it onto Beatrix's finger. What a dazzling diamond it was. When I married him, he never bought me a ring. During our wedding, the rings we exchanged were adorned with fake diamonds ordered online. Now, Beatrix was also pregnant at her wedding. Forget about diamond rings; even our ceremony had been as simple as possible.I chuckled bitterly to myself. So, it wasn't that he couldn't afford it all. He simply never thought that I was worth it.The wedding reception soon concluded smoothly.
