Lisa

The man took a step forward, the bond sending the electric sparks Lacey talked about without him even touching me. The power of it spread through me, begging me to take another step forward.

“What’s your name, little wolf?” His voice rumbled through me, making me clench my thighs, and a small smirk spread over his perfectly plump lips, letting me know he seen that motion.

Heat spread through my body and I rolled my eyes. Why was he acting like this was no big deal? It was the biggest fucking deal. It was catastrophic to my way of life and his, and it would cause more shit than I am willing to deal with.

The coven, the pack, the council, none of them would appreciate this. If they even believed it, they would probably accuse me of making it up and trying to bear hybrid children to execute my dark intentions that the pack thought I had.

I gritted my teeth and Lucille growled in my head. “Lisa, you had better fucking not. Do not fuck this up for us. He’s our fated. The goddess designed it so he is the perfect match for us, the truest love we will ever know. She is never wrong.”

Lucille, how did the goddess design this match? He isn’t even a wolf. She grumbled in my mind, acting as if my thoughts held no sense and only frustrating me more. “The fact that he’s not a wolf doesn’t matter. Maybe she worked with the witch ancestors, because she realized your perfect match couldn’t be found in a wolf. You have to trust her, Lisa.”

Her words sat heavy in my mind. Just trust her. She is the goddess, and only she knows the reason she does things the way that she does. But I couldn’t do this. I couldn’t sit on the council and do things they wouldn’t approve of. Truth is, Lacey, Sydney, and I didn’t admit it, but we were just the picture of the council. The elders made the laws, we enforced them. It didn’t start that way, but it is what it evolved to, and they wouldn’t agree with this.

The man cleared his throat. “Your name?” he asked again, his voice a little firmer. The tone change did things to my body I would never admit, and Lucille was practically purring in my mind.

“It doesn’t matter, because this,” I exclaimed, my finger flailing between the two of us, “would never work. You have to know as well as I do this would not be accepted by the pack, the council, or the coven!”

My voice lifted as the words rushed out, making the man lift an eyebrow. “I said what’s your name, not accept me as your mate!” the man said, his voice dry. Embarrassment filled my body. I had only assumed he was fighting the same thoughts as me, that he wanted to accept the bond.

I paused my speech, nodding my head once slowly. Maybe he wanted my name so he could reject the bond immediately. Even though I knew that would be the best thing for us, my heart clenched, pain spreading through my chest until tears pricked my eyes, and Lucille wailed in my mind.

My voice left me as my mouth opened, preparing to answer him. I took a deep breath. “My name is Lisa,” I answered, my voice barely audible over the music and the wind and the joyful laughter and chatter of the packs and coven surrounding the garden.

He nodded and didn’t speak immediately, but his eyes softened slightly, like he could hear my inner turmoil escape in four simple words.

“It’s nice to meet you, Lisa. My name is—”

“Rowan!” Sydney shouted as she suddenly appeared, wrapping her arms around him. Lucille growled, but I shoved her back, though my breath became trapped in my lungs and a lump lodged itself in my throat.

Sydney did say old friends were coming today, and that she intended to have some fun, and my mind spun. What if this is one of the old friends she was speaking about earlier?

I quickly wiped a tear that leaked free from my eye, pushing my feet to move, to get me out of this situation instead of standing and staring. Lucille growled as I took a step back just as Sydney stepped away from him.

I watched as he ruffled the top of her hair. “Hey, Syd.” The motion didn’t seem sexual, more familial affection, but my fangs still grew in my mouth against my will. “Lucille, get it together. Sydney is one of our best friends. Clearly she knows him and they are friends. She doesn’t know anything about an impossible fucking mate bond.”

Lucille whined, but I felt the fangs recede from my mouth before I felt the barrier that was so rarely closed in my mind slam shut, silencing Lucille completely and cutting me off from the devastation she was feeling.

But that only made me realize that just as much of it was my own. No matter how much I pretended I was fine with the way everything turned out and that my career was all I would ever need, I still dreamed of finding my mate. Of course I did, since I was a little girl, just like every other werewolf girl, the love that is unable to be matched, your perfect other half, the person who completes you and gives you things you never even knew you were missing.

More tears leaked free as I vaguely heard Sydney over the madness loose in my mind. “I can’t believe they talked you into coming. You’re never even with the coven.” I seen Rowan shrug, his mouth moving, but I didn’t register his words because the sound of his voice only increased the devastation already gripping me.

A small sob escaped me as I turned quickly, running toward the palace. “Lisa?” Sydney shouted. I could hear her footsteps beginning to follow me, but I ran faster.

Lisa A tear slipped down my cheek. “I’m sorry, Lace. I know this makes everything harder for you. I told him it doesn’t matter how we feel or if there is a mate bond or not. This can never happen again.” Rowan’s face dropped, a growl slipping through his lips in frustration. “No, Lis. You do not need to worry about how this affects me. He is your mate and, as someone who tried, that’s not an easy bond to fight. I would never want you to and miss out on a love like Fin and I have. We will figure it out.” I hiccuped, trying to keep the sobs pressing against my throat from escaping. “How? You know the council would never allow it.” Lacey sighed. “I know the elders won’t like it, but a chunk of the council is in this room right now,” Lacey said, pointing between her, Sydney, and myself. “We will figure out a way to tell the elders. We just have to be smart about it, make them feel like it’s their idea, and i

Lisa Sydney finally lost her battle against laughter, the sound bursting out of her as she doubled over slightly clutching her stomach. I glared at her. “You are a horrible friend.” “That,” she said between laughs, “is absolutely not true. This is just the funniest possible way for this to happen.” Another knock sounded at the door. “Lisa?” Lacey called again, suspicion clear in her voice now. “Why can I hear Sydney cackling through the door?” My panic only worsened. “Oh my goddess she knows.” “She does not know,” Sydney promised quickly, though the smile still tugged at her lips. “Lacey just notices everything.” Which honestly did not make me feel better. Rowan looked entirely too pleased with himself standing beside me while I spiraled. The bond practically hummed between us now that we were standing close again, warm sparks dancing underneath my skin every time he looked at me. It was distracting. Dangerously distracting. “You smell nervous,” Rowan murmu

Lisa Sydney’s face drained of color as her eyes bounced between the two of us. The fury that had burned so brightly in her expression cracked apart into pure shock. Her mouth opened and closed twice before any sound actually came out. “What?” she finally whispered. I wrapped my arms around myself, suddenly hyper aware of the state I was in. My hair was a mess, my lips swollen, my dress wrinkled beyond saving. There was absolutely no hiding what had happened in this room. Rowan leaned casually against the wall beside the door like Sydney hadn’t just caught us in the middle of the exact disaster everyone feared would happen one day. “Well,” he drawled lightly, “this is awkward.” Sydney whipped toward him so fast I almost laughed despite the panic clawing at my chest. “You shut the fuck up right now.” Rowan lifted his hands slightly in surrender, though the amusement never fully left his face. Lucille practically purred in my mind at the sight of him standing there so c

Rowan My heart froze in my chest. A throbbing entered my chest as I scanned Lisa’s face. I could see the regret written across her features. Still, she didn’t pull away, just rested comfortably in my lap. Nothing had ever felt more right. I knew what she was saying and why she was saying it. I knew this bond would cause both of us trouble, but after having her in my arms, the scent of vanilla and cinnamon filling my nose and tugging at something deep inside of my soul, demanding I pull her closer, that I keep her near me and protect her forever. Her lips quivered and tugged harder at my heart. I pasted a small smile on my lips, feeling them tug up just at the corners enough to draw her attention to them. “Well, I never have been one for following rules and regulations, or giving a single fuck about what anyone thinks, not the coven or council or packs. So we will see.” I answered, making Lisa let out a h

Lisa “Still trying to hide, little wolf?” My body shook, my breath escaping me too quickly as his words sunk into me, a slickness forming between my thighs. “I’m not hiding, I just…” My words cut out as Rowan leaned closer, his lips hovering, just not touching my ear. “Just avoiding the inevitable. I know you feel it too, Lisa,” Rowan whispered before his lips pressed to the shell of my ear, lighting an unfamiliar fire inside of me like I had never felt before. A small whimper escaped me as Rowan pressed his body against mine, his massive member pressing against my stomach as his lips trailed down my neck and then back up towards my jaw, my cheek, and finally my lips. His lips pressed firmly to mine and my body lit up, reacting without caring about any of the things my mind knew, like how this bond was impossible from the start. Lucille yanked that thought from my mind, pu

LisaI stayed in the room long after Lacey had to leave, too afraid to try to move to my own room. I wasn't able to handle the eyes on me, to feel the judgment in the looks that lingered just a little too long, and, most of all, I was completely unprepared for the possibility that I would have to face him again so soon.I knew he hadn’t left. The bond still sparked just underneath my skin. Every time I moved closer to the window, a magnetic force would pull my eyes to the outskirts of the garden where he still stayed. The party had long since ended and the mess was cleaned, but the tables remained for the meeting that would start all too soon. The sun was beginning to throw its first rays across the sky. The knot in my stomach grew as I tried to consider the possibility of staying in here, pretending to be ill, and skipping the meeting. But the elders would never allow it. They insisted we needed to show a united front at all times. If the people saw
