Plates clinking sounds on the dining hall. The smell of eggs, toast, and tea filled the room. Clarissa stood beside Mrs Chen, carefully placing bowls and cups on the table. Her hair was tied back and Her sleeves were rolled up. She had woken up early to join in the morning breakfast preparations.

Mrs. Chen sighed. “You didn’t need to help. Really.” She wasn’t used to people assisting her with her work and now that Clarissa was offering—it felt strange to her.

Clarissa smiled. “I want to. Sitting still in my room all day drives me crazy.”

Mrs Chen rolled her eyes. “You don’t seat in your room all day. You have a garden filled with fresh pumpkins.”

Before Clarissa could retort her words, footsteps from the stairs echoed.

Lucas walked into the dining hall, interrupting the lady’s moment.

He looked smart in his clean suit. His black leather shoes were well polished. But his face said something else. His eyes were a little dark and there were dark shadows under them. His lips were pressed

Clarissa walked beside Lucas, her fingers still wrapped around his arm tightly. The music played on but inside her, everything was stiff. Her throat felt dry, her steps were smooth, but her stomach was twisting. She hasn't seen Easton since that night at the restaurant. And now, here he was.Looking at her like he still had a hold on her. Like nothing had changed. Like he wasn't the one who left her in pieces.Clarissa kept her chin up, her eyes moving across the room like she wasn't bothered. She smiled when she had to. Nodded when someone said hello. But her heart was louder than the music.Lucas leaned toward her and whispered, "We're heading to our section."She nodded quickly, grateful to move away from Easton's line of sight. They reached a private booth located in the upper corner of the hall. It had a perfect view of the entire event happening downstairs, it was also guarded by few of Lucas's men. A tall glass table stood in the center with a chilled bottle of champagne and

The Manhattan Fashion Show was being held at the famous Dillion Hall.Dillion Hall wasn’t just any place. It was a private event center built almost a hundred years ago by the Reeds family—one of the oldest and richest families in New York. Later, the Bears joined hands with them and turned it into something even more exclusive. Now, only a few elite families had access to it. The Bears, The Reeds, A few royal connections and Some political giants. There was a membership club that consisted of ten members. The hall was built inside a reserved complex in upper Manhattan, surrounded by tall trees, a quiet lake, and thick security. No one got in unless their name held weight. Just standing at the gates made Clarissa feel like she had walked into a secret world. She sat quietly in the car, her eyes were wide, looking through the tinted window. “Wow,” she whispered to herself. This was her first time stepping into something like this. Her heart beat fast in her chest. She wasn’t born into

Lucas clicked his tongue again and looked at his diamond wristwatch. The room was quiet except for the soft tick-tock of the clock on the wall. The living room was spacious, Everything smelled like fresh roses and rich perfume.Lucas sat on one end of the long leather couch, legs crossed, back straight. He wore a sharp black suit with a silver chain running from the collar down to the chest. His white sleeve shirt underneath was spotless. His hair was curly and well-shaped, like he had just stepped out of a salon.Across from him sat, Justin. He also wore a black outfit, but his style was more relaxed. No chains. No glitter. Just a clean, matte-black tuxedo and watch. His beard was trimmed and his lips were tight in a serious line.Lucas glanced at him. “Any word on Easton?” he asked, voice smooth but cold.Justin gave a short nod. “Yes. I did some digging. He’s going to be there tonight.”Lucas narrowed his eyes. “At the Manhattan show?”Justin nodded again. “A lady called Mia Brown,

Easton dragged on his tie as he climbed out of his white Lamborghini. His head felt heavy and his body was weak. A bottle of whiskey was in his hand. He took one last gulp before tossing the bottle to the ground. It rolled under the car and shattered. He didn’t care.It was late in the evening when he got back from the bar he lounged in after clocking out of work. His mood has been totally out of fix since he got the news of his demotion. He looked at the car and scoffed.“If I’m demoted, they’ll take this too,” he muttered to himself. “They’ll take everything.”He stumbled toward his front door. His steps were lazy and tired. His mind was racing. His hands were shaking. The words from Justin’s mouth were still fresh in his ears. A demotion? After all he had done?He pushed the door open and walked into his house. The silence inside only made him feel worse. Since Clarissa moved out, there was a particular feeling the house had worn—a very disturbing one and the warmth has sort of det

Lucas glared at Clarissa. "You shouldn't poke your nose into my business, Darling." Clarissa bit her lower lip, the 'Darling' didn't sound endearing this time around. It was more like a warning to her that his boundaries can never be crossed. He won't and can't allow her come near—-she was meant to be at a distance. There was no room for her to be any where close. The awkwardness took a sharper turn when Lucas turned to his grandmother and ground out. "And you, Granny. Stop pulling this little stunts. Else, you might have to go back to your home sooner than you'd want to." There were no traces of smile or laughter on his face. His eyes were blank, but his gaze on them made the women want to crawl into some rock and hid. Mrs Chen sucked in a deep breath, hoping she was invincible enough for Lucas not to notice her. Granny Reed hummed. "Fine." She muttered softly before taking a sip from her tea again. An uneasy silence flooded the dining hall. The rest of the meal was awkward. No o

Clarissa didn't push any further, knowing it was a loose game to question the old woman about her grandson. It just seemed like she was the only one left out on the tea.Granny Reed stood up from the chair and walked over to the living room again to catch up on her favorite morning show.Mrs Chen walked over to the dining hall and began placing food on the table.Plates of scrambled eggs, pancakes, dumplings, and stir-fried vegetables lined up one by one on the long table.Clarissa blinked. "Is someone coming over?""No," Mrs Chen replied. "Just family."Clarissa smiled and looked around. Her smile faded a little when she spotted the time on the clock. It was close to 9:30AM.She glanced at Mrs Chen. "Wait... where's Lucas?"Granny Reed didn't look up, her gaze was fixated on the broad TV.Mrs Chen froze by the juice tray but Clarissa added. "He's not usually this late for work."Mrs Chen cleared her throat. "He... he probably slept late last night. He can clock in whenever he wants,
