Chapter 7

Luke Huxley had betrayed Vyonne twice, leaving her feeling disheartened. She shared her brief story with Warry before hanging up the phone. Little did Luke know that her soon-to-be ex-husband had just answered her call moments before he hung up.

Sitting in the car, Vyonne furrowed her brow. Aside from Warry, she found it difficult to make sense of the situation. Just the day before, her husband had requested a divorce through a lawyer, but at the last minute, he seemed hesitant.

She wasn’t naïve enough to believe that Luke Huxley was reluctant to let her go. She stopped dwelling on his motives, unable to understand them.

If Luke Huxley wanted a divorce, she would eventually comply. Right now, she had more pressing matters to attend to.

Turning the car around, she headed back to her house. Her phone rang as she drove.

“Dexie, I have the information on the topic she asked me to research. Do you need it now?” The voice on the other end of the phone chirped immediately when she answered.

“Yes, please send it to my email address. I’ll be home soon.”

After hanging up the phone, Dexie’s grip tightened on the steering wheel, her eyes freezing. Back at her downtown apartment, she quickly checked her email. Dexie smiled evilly as she examined the document that her subordinate had sent her.

“As expected, this is the true story of my stepsister, Roxane.”

Dexie’s father, Rodel Domino, was the Hansley family’s son-in-law, so she inherited her mother’s last name, Hansley.

Her mother, Wendy Hansley, had passed away when she was two years old because of a mental illness. Rodel had raised her alone until she was four years old, with no relationships with other women. Her grandfather had urged him to remarry.

Eventually, Rodel married Roxane’s mother, Sarry Todd. Because of Sarry’s influence, Roxane naturally adopted her stepfather’s last name.

Because of Rodel’s outstanding past performance, no one questioned the relationship among these three individuals. Since Dexie had lost her mother at a young age and Sarry had always treated her like a daughter since marrying into the family, Dexie had always trusted Sarry. In her previous life, she had stumbled upon a yellowed photo in Rodel’s study before her death. Rodel and Sarry were in the photo.

Judging by the appearance in the photo, Rodel seemed to be still young. Dexie suspected Rodel had already met and been in a relationship with Sarry before marrying her mother.

Roxane, the supposed “stepdaughter,” might not have been a true stepdaughter, either. She could have been Rodel’s illegitimate daughter from an affair. However, before Dexie could confirm this, Roxane tragically died in a car accident. Dexie looked at the documents in her hand with a mix of coldness and irony.

She carefully erased Roxane’s name from the file and smirked. “If you enjoy being a burden so much, have your fun,” she thought to herself. At Lutheran Hospital, Dexie visited her uncle.

“Mrs. Hansley, you’re here.”

“How is my uncle doing today?”

“Mr. Hansley’s condition remains unchanged. You can spend some time with him and talk.”

“Alright, I’ll go see him.” Dexie entered the ICU, where her uncle, Stephen Hansley, lay in bed.

Two years ago, after retiring from the army, her uncle fell into a coma. Despite passing two years, he remained in a vegetative state.

Her grandfather had informed her that the situation was like what had happened before her mother’s death.

The doctor could not find any cause and concluded that the Hansley family had a recessive genetic disease that had become dominant in his mother and her uncle, causing the cerebral cortex to lose its function and slowly turning them into vegetables.

For the past two years, she had been developing a drug that could repair nerve cells in the cerebral cortex. If successful, awakening her uncle could become a possibility, benefiting any vegetative patient. As usual, she chatted with Stephen for a while.

She could return to the Domino family and avenge them without going to the lab. As she left the hospital building and headed to the parking lot, someone stopped her at the door.

“Mrs. Dawson?”

Hearing her name, Dexie raised her head and saw a handsome young man walking towards her. Dexie recognized him as one of Luke Huxley’s subordinates, Sam Milvi, from one of the four rich families.

“Mr. Sam.”

“There’s no need to be formal. Call me Sam.”

Sam was particularly excited. He knew what was happening when he saw her leaving the hospital building. He still asked, “Are you here to see your uncle?”

Dexie nodded and added, “Mr. Sam, I have divorced Luke Huxley. You can refer to me as Mrs. Hansley or use my name. Please don’t call me Mrs. Dawson anymore. Luke Huxley wouldn’t like it, and I dislike it too.”

Sam’s eyes widened in disbelief. “What? Does Luke Huxley want a divorce?”

When he found out from Harold that Narda was coming home and Luke Huxley was going to divorce Dexie, he hadn’t believed it.

“Does Luke Huxley want to leave his wife for his ex-girlfriend, who abandoned him? That is just shameless,” Sam thought to himself.

Sam looked at Dexie. He had a calm temperament and rarely complained. Where else could he find such a lovely wife? Luke Huxley was crazy! If she were his wife, he would adore her. Why would Luke Huxley go back to his ex-girlfriend?

“Well, we’re divorced. Remember that next time you want to call me.”

Dexie shrugged indifferently, glanced at Sam, and left. As Dexie walked away, Sam took several photos of her retreating figure. It was dinner time when Dexie returned to the Domino family villa.

“Mrs. Dexie is back.” In the living room, the Domino family, who had been preparing for dinner, sat down, surprised when they saw Dexie. They rose to receive her with enthusiasm.

“Dexie is back? Why didn’t you tell mom before you came back?”

Sarry grasped Dexie’s hand intimately and greeted her, masking the facade of a caring mother.

If Dexie hadn’t uncovered those truths, she might have been content. Sarry’s insincere smile amused her. She discreetly withdrew her hand from Sarry’s grasp, remarking with a smile, “This is my home. I can return whenever I please. Is there a need for prior notification?” Dexie’s words caught Sarry off guard and left her slightly perturbed.

She had grown accustomed to feigning maternal affection over the years. She still relied on Dexie. Unable to argue, she suppressed her frustration.
