Simon forcefully slammed his legs on the brake, propelling himself forward. The seat belt around him was his one defense from hitting his head on the steering wheel.

He had almost hit her, and there had just been a few inches between her and the front of the car. It had been a very close call.

“What the h*ll,” He cursed under his breath as he unbuckled his belt, switched off the headlight, and hurried out of the car.

She had appeared out of nowhere, all dressed in black and blending with the night. She had a hood over her head, making it difficult to see her face fully.

She looked up, pulling the hood from her head, her hair cascading down her back in rich allure.

“What are you doing here?” Anna asked.

Simon whispered, cutting her off.Anna glanced over at the kids, seeing them concentrating on their conversation. Anna saw the look in Simon's eyes and knew whatever he was talking about was something serious."Hmm, do you want to play in the garden outside?" Anna asked the kids."Dad, can we play games on your phone?" James asked."No, you can't have…" Anna started to say."Of course, here you go," Simon replied with a grin.Anna shook her head at the wiseness of his decision but decided to remain quiet.Simon looked over at William and said, "Stay with the kids; we'll be right back.""Don't wander off, okay? Stay with Uncle William," Anna instructed."Okay, Mom," they chorused.Anna followed Simon up the stairs, down a short corridor, and then into a room that looked like a study. As soon as she

************* Five Hours Earlier ***********************Anna had a neutral look on her face as she watched Simon receive the call. From his expression, whatever he was being told surely was nothing pleasant."Mom, can we go upstairs?" Jasmine ran over to her to ask."No, you cannot; sit down. Have you forgotten why we are here?" Anna asked."No," Jasmine replied and glanced over at her father. It has not even been up to twenty-four hours since they met him, and they are already looking to him to smooth things over."James, Jayden, come here," Anna called. They were both staring at a piece of artwork and running around it. As soon as they heard their names, they came running."Here, sit down," Anna cautioned. They all saw the determined expression on their mother's face and knew not to argue with her when she was like that.Anna looked up and saw William staring at them, unable to mask his shock any longer."You know you're staring right," Anna stated."Oh god, I'm so sorry, I just ca

Paul stared at Noah with an intense look in his eyes, almost threatening."Then be prepared to face the consequences of your action. If it means involving the media and making this a dirty game, we will do it." Paul hissed."There is no point denying this, Uncle; just get Simon to the court, and we can all finish this peacefully." Gideon stated, his lips pulled into a wicked smile."You've got time still, so prepare yourselves." Paul said and walked past Noah.Gideon nodded at his uncle and followed suit, leaving behind a very stunned and worried Noah staring into space.Noah picked up his phone and dialed Simon's number, but it was busy. He ended the call, wondering what he was supposed to do.He decided to go wait it out; hopefully before the end of the day, he was going to call back. The day flew by, and by the time it was noon, there was still no call from Simon, nor did he get any from Emily."You know what? I am taking things into my hands." Noah muttered, picking up his phone a

There was a beat of silence as Clayton stared in confusion, glancing up briefly at Nat before standing up."What problem?" Clayton asked."The finance manager would like to have that discussion with you." The person responded."You should go; I'll take over vetting these documents." Nat said, patting his shoulder."Okay, thanks, I'll be right back; send me a text if Anna gets back before I do." Clayton replied."Sure, will do." Nat winked at him as he left. They rode the elevator further up the building until they got to the floor the finance department was situated on."Right down this way," the person said, pointing."Yes, I've got it from here, thank you." Clayton responded. The person nodded in understanding, walking away as Clayton made his way to the finance manager's office."Hello, Mr. Fisher, thank you for coming." Nat and Clayton stood in Anna’s room, staring out across the expanse of the backyard to watch them.“Is it really necessary for us to watch them like this?” Clayton asked.“Yes, what if Anna starts throwing some punches his way?” Nat asked him right back.“Anna won’t do that,” Clayton responded.Nat looked at him with her brow raised, her eyes narrowed at him in concentration. After a few seconds, Clayton said, “Okay, okay, maybe she can; as long as it involves her kids, there is nothing she won’t do, I know.”“Well, she won’t allow us to go with her, but we can watch from here.” Nat replied.“Well, no, not if they decide to go into the house.” Clayton pointed out."Then we are screwed," Nat stated.“Anna specifically told us to head to the office; we have some financials to go sort out, Nat. Let's quit this detective act and be on our way.” Clayton replied, turning away from the window.“I need to be sure, or I won’t stop thinking about what’s going on over there.” Nat stated.Clayto

Simon woke up from the bed, his eyes bloodshot and drowsy, his hair tousled in every direction. The event of the last few days was taking a toll on him. Those of the coming days were the ones that had him deprived of sleep.“F*ck” he mumbled as he stared at the roof. The night had been filled with turns and hisses, his thoughts consumed by what Anna’s decision would be.“When exactly is she going to…” He muttered, trailing off just as his phone vibrated. He saw the drop-down of two incoming texts at the same time, and she bolted up from the bed.The first was from Hillary, while the other was from Anna. Ignoring the one from Hillary, he opened the one from Anna.-Pick a place; let's meet by 10am.-Simon blinked as he stared at the text, unable to believe she had agreed to meet with him.He typed an address in response to her, his lips curling up in a smile.
