Sophie’s POV

I picked up the three items from the desk and put them carefully into my bag. I stood, and we shook hands across the desk the way we had last time, and then I walked back down the corridor and through the waiting room with the television still going soundlessly on the wall, and out through the automatic doors into the grey morning air.

I stood on the pavement outside the hospital for a moment.

I breathed in. Breathed out.

Then I went to buy the flowers.

  • Ex-Husband's Regret: Your Uncle Wants Me Now   CHAPTER 118

Sophie’s POVHe led me to the couch and waited until I was down before he went to the kitchen. I lasted a few minutes. The quiet left too much room. Derek’s voice was still in my ears. So was the doctor’s. I had walked into that building sure I was counting down, and I had walked out with a future I did not know how to hold. I got up and followed the sound of the pan.Ares had his sleeves rolled. Butter was melting, sweet and warm. He glanced over when he heard me, and something in his face softened.“That was not sitting,” he said.“I wanted to watch you.”“Then watch me from the chair.” He nodded at the stool, but he did not sound like he meant it. “If you hover, I’ll put you on the counter.”I almost smiled. I stayed in the doorway instead and watched him crack the eggs. The yolks held, bright and whole, then spread. I kept telling myself this was not a dream. The floor was cool. My arm still ached from the needle. I was not going to die. The words would not stay. They kept slippin

Sophie’s POVThe words hit the air and stayed there. People turned. One of the guards shifted to block him, but Derek kept going, his voice climbing.“You’re my wife,” he yelled. “You don’t get to run off with him and send me papers like I’m nothing. You ungrateful little slut. After everything my family gave you. After I put a roof over your head. This is what you do?”Ares did not answer him. He did not slow down. He led me to the car, opened the door, and helped me in. His hand was firm at my elbow. His face was calm in the way that meant he was not calm at all.Derek’s voice followed us all the way to the door.“You think he wants you?” he shouted. “He wants to take what’s mine. That’s all you are to him. Something to take.”Ares shut the door between me and the sound. For a second the world went quieter. Then he walked around the car, got in, and pulled away from the curb without looking back.I sat with my hands in my lap and stared at the papers I could still see in my mind, cr

  • Ex-Husband's Regret: Your Uncle Wants Me Now   CHAPTER 116

Sophie’s POVI blinked.I blinked again, waiting for the room to change, waiting to wake up in the penthouse with Ares’s arm still around me. This had to be a dream. It did not feel like a dream. The chair was hard under me. Ares’s hand had gone tight around mine. The doctor’s watch made a small sound when he set his wrist on the desk.“What?” I said. The doctor turned one of the scans toward us. “There is no mass in your brain. There are no cancerous cells. Nothing on these images matches the diagnosis you were given.”I shook my head. “That’s impossible.”“I understand why it feels that way.”“No.” My voice rose. “I got the symptoms. I got blinding migraines for a long while, even before the diagnosis. I was dizzy. I went pale. I felt like my head was splitting open. A doctor told me I was dying.”Ares had gone

Sophie’s POVAres moved so fast I barely saw it.He stepped in front of me, his body between mine and the camera. One of his hands came back to my hip, holding me behind him. The other shot out and grabbed the camera. The man swore. Ares ripped it from his hands and smashed it on the ground. The lens cracked. Plastic scattered across the pavement. The sound was ugly and final. The woman stumbled back, eyes wide.“Stay away from us,” Ares said. His voice was low and cold. “If you come near her again, if you print her name again, if you put a camera in her face again, I will end whatever little career you think you have. Do you understand me?”She looked shocked. The man stared at the broken camera like he could not believe it was his. A piece of the lens lay near my shoe. I did not pick it up. I did not look at them again.Ares did not wait for an answer. He turned, wrapped an arm around my shoulder

  • Ex-Husband's Regret: Your Uncle Wants Me Now   CHAPTER 114

Sophie’s POVThe next day, Ares and I prepared to visit the oncologist.I woke before him, or maybe I never really slept. The penthouse was quiet in that deep way high places sometimes are, with the city held back behind glass and the only sound the low hum of air moving through the vents. City light still clung to the edges of the curtains, pale and thin, not quite morning and not quite night. I lay on my side and watched the slow rise of his chest. His arm was heavy across my waist. Even in sleep, he held me like he was afraid I might slip away if he loosened his grip. His fingers were curled into the fabric of my shirt. Every few minutes he shifted closer, as if some part of him was still keeping watch.I studied his face in the half-light. The line of his jaw. The faint crease between his brows that had not fully smoothed even in sleep. I thought about the night before, about the way he had cried when I told him, about the way he had packed my bags himself and driven me out of tha

  • Ex-Husband's Regret: Your Uncle Wants Me Now    CHAPTER 113

Sophie’s POVHe took my hand and led me back through the house to my room. I could feel how tightly he was holding himself together. Every few steps he looked at me, like he needed to make sure I was still walking beside me and not disappearing. In my room, he opened the closet himself.“Only what you want,” he said. “If you leave it, I’ll replace it. You’re not staying here because of clothes. You’re not staying here for them.”I packed only the clothes he had bought for me. The cream dress. The green one. The soft things that still smelled a little like the hotel in Italy. I left behind almost everything else. Those things belonged to a life where I had been small and unwanted and waiting to die. I did not want to take that version of myself into his home.Ares carried the bags. When we walked back through the house, I did not look toward Shirley’s wing. I did not look for Derek. I kept my eyes on Ares’s back and the door ahead of us.He put me in the car and drove. The mansion fell

Sophie’s POVThe force of it snapped my head to the side and knocked me completely off balance. My back hit the kitchen cabinet and then my legs gave way and I went down to the floor. Sophie’s POVI stood there in the pouring rain without an umbrella, soaking wet within seconds, and I thought about everything that had happened today from the moment I woke up to this exact moment and I almost laughed. Almost. The sound that came out wasn't quite a laugh and wasn't quite a cry. It
