Chapter 1

[Give it a rest, you butch villainess. Mr. Black only has eyes for our Daisy. A poison like you is headed for the psych ward sooner or later.]

[Right? Tearing up a painting, big deal. Once Daisy becomes a top driver, Mr. Black will kick this dead weight to the curb.]

[God, he's so sweet. Shame all that devotion is wasted on the wrong woman.]

Watching the text scroll past, I couldn't help the cold laugh rising in my throat.

For eight years I'd stood beside Ethan, from the days he couldn't even afford a set of used tires to now, when he sat at the head of the country's top racing outfit, Redline Racing.

To clear the loan sharks off his back, I quit the circuit and ran underground street races night after night. I drank myself sick in bars chasing down sponsors for the team he was building.

Now he had the name, the money, the empire. And he wanted to use me as a stepping stone to lift up another woman.

"Babe?"

Ethan cradled my hand and blew on it gently.

"Did you cut your fingers? This is my fault. I never should have hung that ugly thing where it'd bother you."

His eyes were soft with worry. The whole performance was flawless.

If the floating text hadn't warned me, hadn't told me he'd one day lock me away and watch me waste to nothing, I'd probably have melted right there.

I yanked my hand back, and the tenderness on his face froze for an instant.

"What's wrong?"

I swallowed the nausea and pulled up a smile.

"Nothing. I don't feel like staying in. Let's go out to the team base. The new season's almost here."

Ethan blinked, then the smile slid back on.

"Sure. Whatever you want."

He drove me out to the base himself. The second we stepped out of the car, the head mechanic came sprinting over.

"Mr. Black, number three's engine is acting up again. You'd better come take a look."

Ethan patted the back of my hand, soothing.

"Babe, wait for me in the VIP lounge. I'll be quick."

Then he was gone.

I watched his back for a moment, then turned and walked the other way.

Toward Ethan's private office.

I pushed the door open and saw it right in the center of the display case. A custom pink helmet.

Two letters were set into the side in crushed diamonds. DD.

[Whoa. Is that the helmet Mr. Black had custom-made for Daisy? Three hundred grand. It's gorgeous.]

[Daisy said she couldn't afford good gear and was scared to go out on the track without it, so Mr. Black ordered her the best in the world, no questions asked. What kind of fairytale is this?]

[That madwoman Sara doesn't deserve a man like him.]

I lifted the helmet, heavy in my hands, and carried it out to the main team's practice ground.

Every driver stopped at once and turned to look at me.

"Whose helmet is this?"

I didn't raise my voice, but it carried clean across the whole floor.

A slim girl stepped out of the crowd, wearing my old racing suit. Her eyes were rimmed red, her lip caught between her teeth, the picture of fragile innocence.

"Mrs. Black, I'm sorry, it was a gift from Mr. Black. If you like it, please take it. I'll wear my old one. Safe or not, it really doesn't matter."

Whispers rippled around me at once, every glance landing thick with disapproval.

As if I were some petty boss's wife throwing my weight around, stealing a rookie's gear.

I smiled and ran a hand over the helmet's smooth shell, then spoke slow and easy.

"This is a fine piece. Top-grade carbon fiber, a limited run worldwide. The custom fee alone runs three hundred thousand dollars."

"Three hundred thousand?"

The room erupted.

Every driver's expression shifted, shock and envy and something more complicated, all of it aimed at Daisy, whose face had gone bone-white.

She opened her mouth to explain, and I cut her off, cold.

"As the boss's wife, I can't play favorites."

I swept my gaze across the room, my voice ringing clear.

"So here's my announcement. Every signed first-string driver at Redline Racing can order a helmet of the same grade. The bill's on me."

A beat of silence, and then the practice ground exploded with cheering.

"You're the best!"

"Thank you, Mrs. Black!"

Daisy stood in the middle of it all, biting down hard on her lip, shaking from head to toe.

That one-of-a-kind specialness of hers, I'd just smashed to pieces with money.

[This shrew. Spending Mr. Black's money to play generous. She'll be out on her ass soon enough.]

The text kept screaming. I'd stopped bothering to read it.

I walked up to Daisy and looked down at her.

"Your name's Daisy, right?"

"I'll remember you."

Then I turned, walked into Ethan's office, sat down in his big leather chair, and waited.

It wasn't long before he came in, still smiling.

"Babe, engine's fixed. See, you walk in and the team's luck turns around."

I tossed the team roster down in front of him, open to Daisy's page.

I tapped the photo, my voice flat and hard.

"Fire her."

Three months later.Alone, with my new helmet, I came to the starting line of the Isle of Man TT.Without a flicker of hesitation, I hit the gas.The wind screamed past my ears, the raw speed driving my adrenaline straight up.This course I'd once held as both faith and wound, I finally conquered it, on my own.I pulled to a clean stop at the finish line, lifted my helmet, and met the biting sea wind.It turned out that even without the person who'd sworn to ride beside me, the view here still set my blood roaring. My phone buzzed. It was Hunter Holt."How's the wind?"I smiled."Strong. But free."He replied fast."Next time, together."I sat on the bike, looking at the words on the screen, and didn't answer right away.I opened social media and posted a solo shot a staff member had taken for me.In the photo, I held my helmet, standing under the finish-line marker, my eyes proud and certain. The caption was one word."Apex."It had barely posted when Sophie liked it instantly."My qu

Hunter Holt's mentor was filming his retirement tribute, and as a special guest, I spent the whole day helping out.Watching the old coach in his original first-generation racing suit, his wife beside him with the same head of white hair and eyes full of love, I lifted the camera and felt my throat tighten without warning.Hunter Holt appeared at my side at some point and handed me a tissue."Wind's kicking up dust."I covered the move and dabbed at the corner of my eye, sighing."The two of them really do love each other."When the filming wrapped, the coach's wife took my hand warmly and wouldn't let go.She glanced at Hunter Holt a little ways off and smiled, a knowing curve to her mouth, then announced it to the room."Sara, you have no idea. The passenger seat of our Hunter's precious off-roader? Thirty-some years, and he's never let a single woman sit in it. You're the first."I froze.Hunter Holt's ears went red at a visible rate, and he tried to change the subject."Don't tell

I was reviewing data in the Apex Racing lounge when security led in a woman shaking like a leaf.I looked up. It was Daisy. She wore a pilled old sweater, an unhealed scrape across her face, none of the fresh innocence from the day we met.The moment she saw me, she dropped to her knees with a thud."Mrs. Black. I was wrong. Please, forgive me."I frowned, had someone pull her up, and took her to an empty meeting room. The second the door shut, she broke into wailing sobs. She poured out how, after the team went under, Ethan dumped all the blame on her.Not only did he beat her, he forced her to drink with greasy sponsors to help pay off the debt.Slap. Slap. She struck herself across the face, twice, hard, gasping between sobs."It's all my fault. I never should have been greedy. I never should have taken your place."I watched her performance with cold eyes, growing impatient."What you got wrong wasn't liking rich men."I cut her off. She froze, looking up at me through her tears."

"Holy shit, Sara. Best news ever."Sophie shrieked into the phone, electric with glee."Ethan's garbage team just got dropped by their biggest engine supplier. Out of nowhere."I was studying track footage and didn't pay it much mind. Then Sophie dropped the real bomb."And get this, I dug around. That supplier got bought outright a couple of days ago by Hunter Holt's family group.""He's absolutely doing it for you. A man going to war over a woman."Listening to her, something quietly began to thaw deep in my chest. That evening, Ethan was suddenly waiting downstairs from my loft.He looked hollowed out, his eyes sunk deep, like he'd aged ten years overnight. He begged me to come to the old repair shop we used to go to, to see him one last time.I went, my face cold.He sat on the battered couch and opened a bottle of the cheap soda I used to love."Sara, we..."I cut him off, not even glancing at the soda."Say what you have to say."He clenched his jaw and finally got to the point.

I used the money from my bought-out shares to rent a stripped-back, industrial-style loft near the racetrack. The living room was big enough for a full top-grade racing simulator. On moving day, my best friend Sophie showed up hauling two cases of beer. She sprawled across my beanbag chair and spent a solid hour cursing out Ethan's entire bloodline."That son of a bitch. He's a leech. He drained your talent and your blood dry to build his racing empire, then turned around and used everything you bled for to prop up that scheming little fake. He's lower than dirt."Sophie was so worked up her face went red.I cracked open a beer and pushed it into her hand, my voice even."The trash has been sorted and recycled. No point breathing in the smell anymore."Sophie took a long pull and slapped her thigh, exasperated with me."Your problem is you're too soft.""You should have bankrupted him. Put him on his knees begging in the street. Make him understand that without you, Sara, Ethan Black i

I thought with a lawyer handling it, the divorce would go smoothly.I didn't expect Ethan to threaten to kill himself if I didn't come, calling me out to an abandoned underground garage. It was the same place we'd worked out of back when we were just starting. He stood there in that grease-stained old work uniform, eyes manic, showing off the car parked in the center of the garage. It was my first race car, the one I'd wrecked in competition years ago. He'd spent a fortune rebuilding it, an exact replica, down to the bolt."Sara, look. I fixed it."His eyes were bloodshot, his voice raw, like he was flaunting some priceless treasure."Get in and try it. Please. Let's go back to how we were."I stood five meters off, looking at him the way you'd look at a man who had lost his mind completely. When I didn't move, he dropped to his knees with a thud and tried to crawl over and wrap his arms around my legs."Sara, I was wrong. I was so wrong. I'll give up Redline Racing, I'll stop being Mr
