Chapter 3

Author: Ginger Sprout
Julian hadn't seen the mention of divorce coming. His face darkened with each passing second.

"I won't agree to a divorce," he said.

Camille stiffened. Could the reason he was refusing the divorce be…

Then he added, "Grandma wouldn't agree either."

The sound of the door closing came right after.

Camille stood frozen, a suffocating weight pressing on her chest. The idea that had briefly crossed her mind just now seemed laughably absurd.

How could he be refusing the divorce for her sake? What truly held him back was fear of Anita's disapproval. He had no clue she'd already agreed.

They parted on bitter terms that night and went to bed in separate rooms.

The next morning, once the maid, Viola Dorsey, had arrived, Julian slipped out. Camille ate breakfast alone, as if nothing had happened.

Once she'd finished tidying the rooms, Viola stepped out and asked, "Mrs. Hatcher, why are so many things missing from the house?"

Camille paused. Even Viola had noticed how much was missing, yet Julian seemed completely unaware of it. The contrast left no question about his indifference.

She forced a tight smile. "Everything was old, so I got rid of it. None of it was important."

Viola didn't press her any further.

At midday, Camille got a call from Joe. There was a major surgery to be done, and the patient's condition was critical.

The surgeon who specialized in cranial surgeries was out of town on business, leaving Camille as the only one who could operate on Michael Lyle.

She hurried to Centrum Hospital, changed into her scrubs, and entered the operating room. All the attending physicians were there, including Kimberly.

The air was heavy with the sharp, metallic tang of blood.

While the other doctors moved in to assess Michael's injuries, Kimberly hung back. She fought the rising tide of nausea, gagging despite herself.

"Dr. Stowell, you're here."

Avery Torres, the anesthesiologist, approached Camille.

"The patient had a fall at a construction site. He was brought in just now, and he's unconscious."

Camille couldn't help but gasp at how serious it was.

An eight-inch rebar had gone straight through Michael's skull and eye. He was unconscious, yet his vital signs persisted. It was nothing short of a miracle.

Swallowing hard against the queasy churn in her stomach, Kimberly asked, "Dr. Stowell, can you really handle this surgery? One misstep and he's dead."

"Or are you volunteering?" Camille shot back.

Kimberly's face twisted with displeasure.

Camille slipped on her gloves and turned to the other doctors. "We'll begin with a decompressive craniotomy, then remove as much of the clot as possible."

Avery and the doctors were ready.

Kimberly bit her lip. "Should I stay?"

"Everyone who isn't needed, out," Camille said, already knowing Kimberly's presence would only get in the way.

"But—"

"Dr. Walsh, the patient's condition is critical. Go and calm the family. That's where you're needed."

None of Centrum Hospital's surgeons would touch the case. One wrong move, and a career could vanish in an instant.

And everyone had seen Kimberly's expression when she walked in. Without her powerful backing, they would've shredded her long ago.

Left with no choice, she clenched her fists and slipped out of the operating room.

After confirming that Michael's brainstem was intact and that the cerebral blood vessels showed no visible damage, Camille and her team spent five grueling hours extracting the rebar.

After that, they moved on to reconstruct the skull base.

The surgery stretched into the evening. When the team finally confirmed that Michael's vital signs were stable, a long, collective sigh of relief filled the room.

Once the surgery was over, the other doctors immediately went to inform the family. Camille, however, went directly to the hospital director's office.

When Joe heard that the surgery had gone successfully, a surge of excitement washed over him. "Cami, we really owe this one to you."

"It's not just me. The team worked together perfectly, and the patient was fortunate. The rebar went straight through the brain, but it missed every critical structure. Otherwise, not even a miracle could have saved him."

Joe nodded, then tried again to convince her to stay. "You're really not going to reconsider the transfer?"

He could see for himself just how capable Camille was. Not only was she the youngest surgeon, but she was also a woman, which was a rarity in the medical field.

Orivane was a small city, and its hospital couldn't compete with the benefits and pay offered by those in Solvane. It was a real loss, giving up such a prime position just to transfer to Orivane Hospital.

Camille shook her head, a small smile playing on her lips. "I've made my decision. But don't worry. If you ever need me, I'll find the time to help whenever I can."

Hearing that, Joe let go of any further attempts to persuade her.

After leaving Joe's office, Camille spotted Julian walking toward her.

She stopped and started to speak, but he passed by her, calling out, "Dr. Stowell, I need to talk with you."

Camille followed Julian out onto the balcony, still visibly drained from a long surgery.

"What do you—"

"Why did you go after Kimberly in the operating room?"

Surprise flickered across Camille's face. She stared at Julian, bewildered. "What do you mean by that, Julian?""I mean exactly what you just heard."Her fists clenched before she even realized it.When had Julian suddenly grown a conscience? He'd always loathed the Stowells. Since when had he ever shown kindness? Or was this just a way to keep Harvey close so Julian could use him against her later? While Camille was lost in a daze, Julian's gaze lingered over her plain outfit. His voice, calm and measured, sliced through her fog. "Get in the car. I'll take you to pick out a few new outfits."Before Camille could reply, Naomi swung open the car door and took the box from her hands. "Ms. Stowell, please."Camille stayed still, her expression calm. "Just get to the point instead of beating around the bush."Julian stopped fiddling with his watch and looked up. "Dad's back. We're having dinner at Hatcher Manor tonight."That was it.Arthur's work kept him away most of the year,

Julian motioned for Dustin to get in the car.Dustin went around, opened the door, and slid inside. "The officer on duty that day was a relative of Mr. Hodgson. No matter how hard I pressed him, he kept insisting he'd fallen asleep while on duty, claiming no one had reported the incident."To make matters worse, the indoor cameras had been logged for maintenance that day. The officer in the surveillance room assumed they were being repaired and figured that, since the suspects were locked up together, nothing serious could happen. So…"Every word made it harder for him to go on. That lapse at the police station had left Harvey, the suspect, seriously injured. If the higher-ups ever found out, his position as police chief would be gone.Julian loosened his tie. "The officer on duty fell asleep? The cameras were under maintenance? Even if the room holding suspects had a broken camera, someone would still be watching it 24 hours a day, right?"He shot Dustin a sharp, disdainful look.

"Camille, are you enjoying provoking me?" Julian demanded. His hand clamped around her wrist, the grip so tight it made her flinch. A sharp jolt of pain shot up her arm, snapping her wide awake."Mr. Hatcher, I didn't realize you thought so highly of yourself. Why would I waste my time trying to provoke you?"Julian said nothing. He studied her calmly, as though he were trying to look straight through her."Let go! You're hurting me!"Camille's wrist throbbed under his grip, the pain sharpening until she couldn't bear it anymore. Her eyes burned with frustration.Julian released her without a thought.Freed at last, she rubbed her wrist and snapped, "What the hell are you trying to do, Julian?"She couldn't make sense of it. He'd brushed her off every other time, so why couldn't he brush her off now?"I told you to stay away from Seth," Julian muttered."I never interfered in your relationship with Kimberly. So what gives you the right to meddle in mine?"His expression reve

Camille's smile faded as she met her gaze. "If we're talking about cheating, Julian was the one who cheated on me first."Contempt curled Giselle's lips into a sneer. "Don't flatter yourself. You know exactly why you were with Jules. Who do you think you're fooling with that innocent act?"You chose to be a desperate fool, Camille. Nobody forced you. Jules didn't love you, and that alone was enough to break you? What a joke!"If you wanted to hook up with some random guy, you should've left Jules first. Don't sleep around with other men and come back to him, bringing disease with you—"Camille's expression went cold as she slapped Giselle, jerking her head sharply to the side.Giselle froze, pressing a hand to her cheek before slowly turning back to Camille. "H-how dare you hit me?"No one had ever dared, except Anita.Camille had long since had enough of her. "I've already done it. What else is there to dare? Am I supposed to sit back and take it? Say whatever you want about me

Camille wasn't prideful. She just wanted to get the divorce over with quickly, without getting tangled up in arguments about money. After all, Julian had always believed she married him for his wealth. If she asked for too much, there was no way he would let her have it.To him, a million dollars and the apartment in Aetheria Heights were nothing compared to his other assets.Casper saw that Camille was determined and didn't press further. He went over the terms of the agreement to ensure every detail was clear. After confirming, Camille said, "I want you to send this divorce agreement to Julian for me on the very last day of the month.""You're not going to talk things over with Mr. Hatcher in person?"Camille paused briefly, then offered a faint smile. "There's nothing more to talk about."Casper nodded, collected the papers from the desk, and stood up to leave.Camille held her hand, cold to the touch, and stared at the spot where her ring had sat. Camille followed Julian back to Aetheria Heights. Once he had made up his mind, there was never any point in trying to argue with him.He punched in the code, stepped inside, and she followed close behind. When the entrance lights flickered on, he shrugged off his coat and slid his watch from his wrist without a word.Every movement he made in the tight space had a predatory edge. She couldn't shake the sense of danger that clung to him."I'm sleeping in the guest room."Camille made her intentions clear and walked past Julian toward the guest room.He watched her go without a word.As soon as she entered the room, her first instinct was to lock the door. She was terrified of losing control, and she refused to let it happen.Above all, she feared that losing control would make her stance falter.…The next morning, Camille arrived at the hospital early. Outside the ICU, two different bodyguards were posted. It looked like they were taking turns keeping watch.Camille stepped
