Chapter 7

Author: Ginger Sprout
Camille went to the hospital to check on Michael. When Dianne realized that Camille was his surgeon, a wave of gratitude hit her so hard she nearly sank to her knees.

The medical staff accompanying Camille caught her just in time and helped her back to her feet.

"Please, don't. Saving lives is our duty," Camille said.

"If it weren't for you, Michael wouldn't have made it. You gave him a chance. I can never thank you enough."

Dianne was well into her years. She wept uncontrollably, not from grief, but from the overwhelming relief that Michael had survived.

Camille and the others were medical professionals who'd stared death in the face more times than they could count. There was nothing more gratifying than saving a life.

Michael was out of danger after the surgery. Considering everything, the fact that he suffered no serious complications was as lucky as he could've gotten.

Camille took Dianne's arm to steady her, murmured a few comforting words, and reminded her of a few things before leaving the hospital room alongside the medical staff.

Back in her office, her phone rang. It was her father, Greg Stowell.

She hesitated for a long moment before finally deciding to answer.

"Cami, can you come home with Julian?"

Camille felt a flutter of unease, and her expression sank. "If there's something you need, just say it."

"What's that supposed to mean? Do I need a reason to tell you to come home? Just make sure you're back this afternoon."

Before Camille could protest, Greg ended the call.

While Julian sat through a meeting at Hatcher Group, his phone buzzed. It was a message from Kimberly.

"Julian, Xav's already at kindergarten. Thank you. If it weren't for you, Xav wouldn't even be able to go to school."

He read the message, tapped the screen, and typed a simple reply. "No problem."

When he opened WhatsApp, his eyes went straight to Camille's chat. That was when he realized her final message had been sent on the eighth of last month.

She'd asked if he was coming home that weekend, but he never replied. After that, she stopped texting him altogether.

She really knew how to keep her cool.

That afternoon, Camille lingered outside the Stowell residence, hesitating, before finally crossing the threshold.

Her mother, Erica Bellamy, spotted her and stepped forward, a warm smile on her face. "Cami, you're back."

Her eyes darted to the doorway, and a shadow of disappointment flitted across her face.

Camille caught it immediately and said lightly, "Don't bother looking. I'm the only one who came back."

Erica's smile wavered.

Just then, Greg came down the stairs. When he didn't see Julian, his expression tightened with irritation.

"Didn't I tell you to bring Julian along?"

"He's busy," Camille replied.

"What do you mean he's busy? That's your husband! Every couple argues and makes up, yet you can't even get him home for a single meal? Are you really that useless?"

Camille felt a chill of disappointment. No one—not even her own family—could understand her.

Greg didn't even ask for an explanation. He launched straight into scolding her, holding her responsible for everything that went wrong.

Six years had passed, and nothing had changed.

Camille remembered how radiant Greg and Erica had been the day she married Julian. They insisted the wedding gifts didn't matter in the slightest.

The Stowells were a modest family—much smaller than the Hatchers—but by any ordinary measure, they were comfortably well-off.

At the time, Camille had truly believed that Greg and Erica were sincere, that they genuinely wanted her happiness.

But after the wedding, everything shifted. Greg and Erica began urging her to ask Julian for money now that she was Mrs. Hatcher.

At first, their demands were simple—money for a villa and a new car for her brother, Harvey Stowell. Later, when Greg suffered losses in his business, he expected Julian to bail him out as well.

To Greg and Erica, Harvey always came first. In their eyes, Camille was nothing more than a cash cow, having latched onto the wealthy Hatchers.

She snapped back to the present, her voice perfectly calm. "I'm afraid I can't help you with that. We're getting a divorce."

The moment the word "divorce" hit his ears, Greg's expression darkened like a gathering storm. He struck her across the face.

Surprise flickered across Camille's face. She stared at Julian, bewildered. "What do you mean by that, Julian?""I mean exactly what you just heard."Her fists clenched before she even realized it.When had Julian suddenly grown a conscience? He'd always loathed the Stowells. Since when had he ever shown kindness? Or was this just a way to keep Harvey close so Julian could use him against her later? While Camille was lost in a daze, Julian's gaze lingered over her plain outfit. His voice, calm and measured, sliced through her fog. "Get in the car. I'll take you to pick out a few new outfits."Before Camille could reply, Naomi swung open the car door and took the box from her hands. "Ms. Stowell, please."Camille stayed still, her expression calm. "Just get to the point instead of beating around the bush."Julian stopped fiddling with his watch and looked up. "Dad's back. We're having dinner at Hatcher Manor tonight."That was it.Arthur's work kept him away most of the year,

Julian motioned for Dustin to get in the car.Dustin went around, opened the door, and slid inside. "The officer on duty that day was a relative of Mr. Hodgson. No matter how hard I pressed him, he kept insisting he'd fallen asleep while on duty, claiming no one had reported the incident."To make matters worse, the indoor cameras had been logged for maintenance that day. The officer in the surveillance room assumed they were being repaired and figured that, since the suspects were locked up together, nothing serious could happen. So…"Every word made it harder for him to go on. That lapse at the police station had left Harvey, the suspect, seriously injured. If the higher-ups ever found out, his position as police chief would be gone.Julian loosened his tie. "The officer on duty fell asleep? The cameras were under maintenance? Even if the room holding suspects had a broken camera, someone would still be watching it 24 hours a day, right?"He shot Dustin a sharp, disdainful look.

"Camille, are you enjoying provoking me?" Julian demanded. His hand clamped around her wrist, the grip so tight it made her flinch. A sharp jolt of pain shot up her arm, snapping her wide awake."Mr. Hatcher, I didn't realize you thought so highly of yourself. Why would I waste my time trying to provoke you?"Julian said nothing. He studied her calmly, as though he were trying to look straight through her."Let go! You're hurting me!"Camille's wrist throbbed under his grip, the pain sharpening until she couldn't bear it anymore. Her eyes burned with frustration.Julian released her without a thought.Freed at last, she rubbed her wrist and snapped, "What the hell are you trying to do, Julian?"She couldn't make sense of it. He'd brushed her off every other time, so why couldn't he brush her off now?"I told you to stay away from Seth," Julian muttered."I never interfered in your relationship with Kimberly. So what gives you the right to meddle in mine?"His expression reve

Camille's smile faded as she met her gaze. "If we're talking about cheating, Julian was the one who cheated on me first."Contempt curled Giselle's lips into a sneer. "Don't flatter yourself. You know exactly why you were with Jules. Who do you think you're fooling with that innocent act?"You chose to be a desperate fool, Camille. Nobody forced you. Jules didn't love you, and that alone was enough to break you? What a joke!"If you wanted to hook up with some random guy, you should've left Jules first. Don't sleep around with other men and come back to him, bringing disease with you—"Camille's expression went cold as she slapped Giselle, jerking her head sharply to the side.Giselle froze, pressing a hand to her cheek before slowly turning back to Camille. "H-how dare you hit me?"No one had ever dared, except Anita.Camille had long since had enough of her. "I've already done it. What else is there to dare? Am I supposed to sit back and take it? Camille wasn't prideful. She just wanted to get the divorce over with quickly, without getting tangled up in arguments about money. After all, Julian had always believed she married him for his wealth. If she asked for too much, there was no way he would let her have it.To him, a million dollars and the apartment in Aetheria Heights were nothing compared to his other assets.Casper saw that Camille was determined and didn't press further. He went over the terms of the agreement to ensure every detail was clear. After confirming, Camille said, "I want you to send this divorce agreement to Julian for me on the very last day of the month.""You're not going to talk things over with Mr. Hatcher in person?"Camille paused briefly, then offered a faint smile. "There's nothing more to talk about."Casper nodded, collected the papers from the desk, and stood up to leave.Camille held her hand, cold to the touch, and stared at the spot where her ring had sat.
