SLOANE

“As a couple, you'll have to decide which way the paternity would be tested. We have the non-invasive paternity test. It only requires blood work and a quick cheek swab and has a very high chance of accuracy," the obstetrician explained, and I nodded my head in understanding.

“For the invasive paternity test, it has a higher accuracy than the non-invasive, but there's a 30 percent risk of miscarriage."

My heart leaped and I shook my head in disagreement immediately.

That doctor — I hadn't even gotten his name — had told me that my baby was currently in a fragile state.

I was definitely not doing anything that was going to endanger this child more.

“We'll be going for the invasive paternity test since it has a higher accuracy," Nika suddenly stated, and I turned to her immediately.

She definitely wants my child dead.

“No, we're not," I disputed immediately, glaring at Killian to say something.

"Miss Sloane, I'm doing this because I care for Lian. He needs to be sure it's his child you're carrying.” I turned to Killian. He wasn't even attempting to say anything.

"Are you kidding me? You'd prefer the option that puts our child's life at risk just to be ‘very sure?’ Is that what you're saying?” My voice came out a little louder than intended, but I couldn't even care less anymore.

“It's not that dangerous, Sloane. Besides, it's also faster. Didn't you hear her? We could get the results today."

Anger surged through me.

This wasn't the husband I remembered. This was a beast unravelling itself, I had never seen this part of him ever.

“Of course. Why protect the baby when we can protect your ego?" I had forgotten that my voice could get that loud or that I could even talk back at Killian.

“We're taking the one Nika pointed out and that's final." My heart felt like it had been cut through with a thousand knives.

I stared at him for the longest moment since this divorce issue started and nodded slowly.

“Alright."

Once this baby is confirmed to be yours, Killian, I am going to take my revenge in the most ruthless way possible.

The procedure hadn't been painful much to my surprise, and we were told to wait a few hours to get the results.

Funny, because it was originally supposed to be about five to seven days, but rules had never applied much to my scumbag husband.

He had the money, the power, the affluence.

And when you had all those combined, you could bend the rules however you please.

I rested my back on the chair I was seated on, one hand placed on my stomach — that had suddenly become a habit for me since I learned I was pregnant.

Now I get why Nika was obsessed with her hands on her belly. Though hers was to show off that she was pregnant, mine was to reassure myself that the child was still in my womb.

“Mr. and Mrs. Ardenian?" one of the obstetricians called out, and I stood to my feet immediately.

Nika's face darkened as she just grabbed Killian's hand and walked toward the doctor.

Me?

I had already snatched the test results from the doctor.

“See that? Do you have any more doubts? The child is yours, Killian! Your little birdie can stop feeding you with nonsense ideas," I said, eyeing Nika. Killian's face hardened.

His eyes held monstrous intent, and his hands coiled up into fists at his sides.

Even now, even when it was confirmed I had his child, he was going to defend his mistress in front of me.

“Wow. So you did cheat on me?" Killian yelled, his palm striking my cheek immediately, the impact causing me to stagger backward.

My vision blurred, my head rang, and I shook my head to relieve myself of the dizziness that had just taken over me.

“You hit me,” I whispered slowly, tears rushing out of my eyes as my cheek burned.

I knew he defended Nika a lot, but he had never gone as far as hitting me.

But he actually did this for her?

"You actually tried to trick me with a pregnancy you got from some shameless fool out there, whore!” He yelled again, his eyes red in anger as he stared at the pregnancy test report I was holding out.

Wait.

What the heck is going on?

I turned the test result to myself immediately, my eyes quickly scanning it, and it felt like I had been struck in the head.

Killian Ardenian is not the father?

No!

No. There's no way!

I've never cheated. I've never slept with any man other than my husband.

I turned to the doctor immediately, grabbing her coat.

"This is fake. This isn't my pregnancy report. It can't be. Tell me!” Tears were streaming out of my eyes when Killian grabbed me by the hair again and sent another slap across my face.

It was like being struck by lightning.

"I fed you! Took care of you! And you actually had the guts to put this green hat on me? Cheating on me while under my roof. Tell me, who is the jerk? Who is the bastard's father?”

Cheat? The word didn't just hurt. It felt like being accused of a crime I knew nothing about.

"I had to put up with you, letting myself learn to endure your presence after you literally forced your way way into this marriage and you had the guts to cheat on me?"

It felt like I had been struck by heavy metal at the back of my head. What the hell was he talking about?

" You had to put up with me? I....forced you into this?" The words came out slowly like they never wanted to leave my tongue, disbelief clouding my vision.

"I'm definitely sure you planned for us to be filmed. Else, I would have married Nika! And yet you put this green hat on me?" He said again, his hands folded into fist like he was going to strike my face.

Hot liquid flooded down my eyes.

I swallowed hard, staring between him and Nika.

Nika! He had always wanted to marry her. All the times I had thought he loved me and treated me like an equal, he was only 'trying his best to put up with me?'

I scoffed, my heart feeling heavy and pierced like it had been jabbed with a thousand knives.

“Wow. This is quite…unexpected, Miss Sloane. So you did cheat on Lian?” Nika said, her expression really that of surprise.

"You're not going to say it, right? You're protecting the bastard, right? Who did you cheat on me with?” he said, shoving me to the ground and about to slam his fist into my face when a hand grabbed him.

“Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Killian Ardenian. If anything happens to my child, I will fight you, and I won't play nice.”

I glanced up immediately.

It was that doctor! The one from earlier. The one who gave me the pregnancy report. I still didn't even know his name.

Killian looked between the both of us, his eyes filled with rage.

"Your child? This is the bastard you cheated on me with? A fucking doctor?” Killian yelled.

"It's Doctor Rhys Storm.”

Blood, fucking hell! I didn't even know this man. We've never even met. Why the hell was he claiming my baby?

CHAPTER 13SLOANEWhen I got back to my mother’s room, I pushed the door open quietly and stepped inside, immediately fixing my expression into a calmer one when I noticed my mother awake. Her pale face turned slightly toward me and even though she looked weak against the hospital pillows, her eyes still carried the same sharpness I remembered growing up with.“You took long enough.” Her voice came out dry.Relief flooded through me so quickly that I nearly burst into tears.“You’re awake.” I whispered, rushing toward her bedside.“Yeah.” She muttered weakly before her gaze shifted past me toward the door. “Who was that man outside?”I slowly adjusted the tray of food in my hands and sat beside her carefully. “Which man?”“The tall one glaring like the hospital owed him money.” She replied flatly. “Was that your husband?”I let out a short breath and looked down at the soup I was stirring. “Unfortunately.”My mother was silent for a moment before speaking again. “He looks arrogant.”I

SLOANEThe hospital cafeteria was one floor down, and I had barely registered the distance between my mother’s ward and the elevator before exhaustion started to creep into my bones. Everything had been a blur since we arrived, machines, doctors, insurance forms, Rhys Storm’s unsettling presence hovering around every corner like he belonged both in my past and in places he had no right to be.But hunger didn’t care about emotional chaos. My mother needed food, and I needed to keep moving before my mind caught up with everything threatening to break me apart.I stepped out of the stairwell door, adjusting my hospital pass at my wrist when I saw Killian and Nika. They stood near the corridor leading to the oncology wing, too composed, too intentional to be just passing through. Killian’s posture was straight, his expression unreadable at first glance, but I knew him too well not to notice the tension in his jaw. Nika stood slightly behind him, her hand resting lightly on her stomach

KILLIANThe meeting had dragged on for nearly three hours, and by the time the fifth board member began repeating a point that had already been discussed twice, irritation sat heavily beneath my skin.Usually, I would have tolerated it, usually I had patience for businessBut lately, it’s been a different thing altogether. Ever since the scandal surrounding my marriage exploded publicly, everything had become unbearable. Investors were whispering, shareholders were asking questions indirectly, and media outlets kept dancing around headlines they were too careful to publish outright.Killian Ardenian’s wife involved in infidelity scandal. The mere thought darkened my mood instantly.I leaned back in my chair silently while one of the executives continued presenting quarterly projections across the screen. Nobody in the room dared acknowledge the tension hanging over me, but I noticed the cautious glances anyway. They all knew and what irritated me most wasn’t even the cheating itself.

SLOANEThe moment we arrived at Norcane International Medical Center, everything became chaos.Nurses moved briskly around my mother’s wheelchair while attendants pushed open double doors leading deeper into the private oncology wing. The sharp scent of antiseptic filled my lungs as I walked beside her bed with trembling fingers wrapped tightly around the rail.“Mum?” I called softly, brushing her cold hand. “We’re here now.”Her eyes fluttered weakly, exhaustion etched into every fragile inch of her face, and guilt clawed viciously through my chest all over again. The flight had drained her badly.I walked ahead speaking with one of the administrative staff while my father remained beside me in complete silence. His expression looked carved from stone as always, but I noticed the faint tightness in his jaw every time my mother coughed. The nurses finally wheeled her into a private ward and immediately began hooking her up to machines while another doctor reviewed the medical files Ve

CHAPTER 9SLOANE“Did you really divorce your husband, Sloane?”I stared at Dominic silently after the question left his mouth, my fingers tightening unconsciously around my mother’s frail hand. There it was, the curiosity, the judgment and the need to know exactly how badly my life had fallen apart.A humorless smile tugged at my lips as I slowly looked away from him.“You’ve gotten quite bold over the years,” I muttered quietly. “Asking about my private life like you actually have the right.”His brows furrowed slightly. “That’s not what I meant.”“Then what exactly did you mean?” I snapped, exhaustion creeping sharply into my voice. “Because unless I suddenly missed the part where we became close, I don’t remember owing you explanations.”Dominic remained silent for a few seconds before sighing quietly. “I wasn’t trying to upset you.”“Well, congratulations,” I answered bitterly. “You failed.”The room fell quiet again and I could feel him staring at me, probably trying to figure o
