The beeping sound of machines was tormenting, with the smell of disinfectant accompanying it. I quickly figured I was in a hospital.

I tried to figure out when I got here and how when I felt a hand gently caressing mine, it was rough, comforting, and weirdly familiar. I shot my eyes open and was met with the white ceiling. I sat up and quickly turned to my right since that's the hand that was caressed.

“You're awake, get the doctor, she's awake!” He weirdly sounded worried.

Yes, it was Rodrigo, my husband, well, soon-to-be ex-husband.

I shouldn't have, but I was strangely glad.

“Don't worry, the doctor will come and check on you now; just stay calm, okay?” He said, still not leaving my hand, which made me look down at it.

Was I in heaven? Because the last thing I remember was him asking for a divorce.

“I'm sorry, Val, I'm truly sorry.”

“Huh?” I was so confused right now.

“I saw the papers. God, I shouldn't have known she tricked me.”

“I—”

ILLINOIS, CHICAGOV A L E R I AI sipped on my glass of water before responding, “You can spend the money however you want, Ms. Single; you deserve it.”“I know I do, and it wouldn't have been possible without you, Ms. Sterling. I can't thank you enough.”“Trust me, your commission was enough.” I laughed.“Well, you know he's a politician. I thought I wouldn't win. I mean, he did try to bribe you with more than my commission, so I am grateful for your faithfulness.”“Again, you don't have to thank me; I was just doing my job, and besides, I didn't do this alone.”“I know you didn't; that's why I'm inviting you and your team out for a wild night. I'm spending my settlement on a strip club; you should come.”“I will pass the invite to my team, but I can't; I'm busy,” I said, looking at the box of puzzles on my desk.“Come on, I know you're a divorce attorney, but even lawyers have fun.”“You do know that I have plans.”“Oh, if it's a man, then take it from me, have fun, bounce on dick o

I don't know where I was headed, but I was now in my car, on the road, stepping on the pedal. She can't go. I can't let her go. I love her; I do, and she deserves to experience the love she has been giving for years.“Drive, fuck!” I hit the horn as the fuck in front of me drove like a sick bastard. My phone was ringing. I knew who that was; it had to be Aaliyah or Madeline since Oscar didn't have the guts to face me, but I didn't give a shit. I needed to stop Valeria. I mean, there was no stopping her now, but I needed to get to her, to bring her back.I didn't realize I was driving to the airport until I was parking there. Shit, was I losing my mind? After parking the car, I removed the seatbelt and was going to get out when someone entered through the passenger seat. I was ready to pull out my gun until I saw it was Christian.“Boss—”“Don't boss me. Did you book my flight?” He shook his head with a sorry look, and I joined everything in my head. I held him by his shirt collar, and

R O D R I G OI sipped on my glass of scotch before I adjusted the computer so I could have a better view of my son.He was in PE class; they were playing basketball, and I must admit my son was talented. He knew how to work with the ball.“Mr. Roberts?” A voice snapped me back to reality, and turning that way, I saw the panicked man standing in front of me.“What?”“I wanted to know if you want to go to the field for a better view, of course.”“Get out.”“Sir?”“I hate repeating myself.”“Okay, sir. Whatever you say.” He bowed, hesitated before turning toward the door. I thought he had left until I heard his annoying voice at this point: “Would you like a cigarette, maybe?” he asked. I could see the fear in his eyes, which told me a cigarette wasn’t what he wanted to offer me first.“How does a school have cigarettes?”“I’m the principal, the same way I have alcohol is the—”“No, now get out before I change my mind and cut your head.” Shit, he was sweating like a pig. I mean, for a p

“No, I can't do that; you're asking for a lot.”“Then forget about me signing.” I didn't mean it, but I had to act serious.“Val, you know that’s not going to happen, twenty million? Really?”“Money is not a problem to you, Mr. Roberts, and you should be thanking me. We are married, and you didn't sign any prenup, so–”“That's because our marriage wasn't any ordinary one. What will your father say when he hears this?”“He will know that I took his brain. Now, Rodrigo, either that or no deal, and I know you run Atlanta. I know the police and even divorce attorneys won't help, but the media—yes, you can surely buy two or three, but a post made online can't be erased. Your reputation—”“Fine! Fine, I'll give you the money, but not twenty, five.”“Fifteen.”“Ten.”“Deal.” I sounded like a divorce settlement attorney.“Shit.” He cursed, running his hands through his hair.I really didn't get why twenty million was a problem when he had billions. I mean, I had access to his accounts as his

I inwardly cursed as I struggled to remove the IV from my wrist. Shit, this was hard, but if I needed to save myself now, I had to get out of this hospital.I was still struggling when I heard the clearing of throats, not one but two, and so without stopping, I looked in the direction it came from, and it was the director and his wife; they were just staring at me without any comments.“I think you need a nurse to help with that.” The woman said, and I almost cursed her, as how could I call for a nurse when I'm locked here? But I remembered her husband was the only person who could help me, so I stopped, nodded my head, and kindly asked her if she could get me a nurse.“I need to get home.”“Home?”“Yes, anything wrong?” Like, why did she sound like that?“Um, I don't mean to rub salt in your wound, but my husband told me about the incident. If your sister did that, then imagine what she would do when she sees you.”“I don't care about that; my accounts are frozen, I'm pregnant, and I

Okay, this must be a dream because… I started biting my inner cheeks, and when it didn't change anything, I started slapping my cheeks.“Mrs. Roberts, you need to calm down.” The doctor said his voice was soft.“It's not a dream, it's true; your baby is alive and healthy.” The director reassured me, realizing how unsettled I was after hearing the news.Well, he seemed to be the only person I could trust for now. He had a wedding ring on his finger, and even though that never stopped a man, I still respected a married man, so, clearing my voice, I asked that the doctor and nurse give us the room. They didn't hesitate; the nurse said she would be back with my breakfast, and I nodded, thanking her in my heart, as I didn't have enough voice for her, but I was surely hungry—that I couldn't deny.“How are you feeling?” The director asked after the door was closed, and I forced a smile, shifting slightly, “The two nurses begged and told me your sister put them to the task.”“You can't call m

I used to beg them not to do it in the past days; I even used to threaten that my husband would deal with them, that he ran Atlanta, but after today I think that would be a waste of my breath, especially after he showed up today and showed interest in their boss, Aaliyah.“Calm, obedience, or memory reset?” One of them asked, playing with the remote control.“We can't use a memory reset for now; remember what Ms. Aaliyah said?”“Oh, she won’t sign if she loses her memory now. Okay, let’s do obedience.” She answered the other, who now moved the plugs from my temples to my back.“Bitch, you're not going to beg for your life?” The other asked, maybe they were used to my begging, but I didn't have it in me today.“It's not like we will listen, but it's what makes this whole experience more fun.” The other admitted, and I just closed my eyes and waited for it to be over.“I don't like this.”“What?”“She's being rude, and she is a nobody to be rude to us.”“You're right, I also want to hit

All the emotions I bottled up, everything that had happened that I kept to myself, came crashing down because of Millie's comfort, and I couldn't help but let myself be and cry freely.Millie was my good friend and the only person who didn't treat me differently in our world because, let's be honest, being Oscar's surrogate daughter didn't automatically command respect from others within our class. At all the events I was invited to, they always talked down on me, calling me dirty-poor blood because, well, they were like royalty or something, but I didn't choose this.I didn't ask my mother, whoever she was, to be a surrogate for this family.Millie was from another wealthy family, married to another billionaire; frankly, her life was all easy, so you can just understand what she went through to be my friend, but we grew up together, and the fact that her husband, Miles, was Rodrigo's best friend brought us even closer.“She has lost it; your friend has lost it.” I heard Rodrigo say,
