ADRIANO

THE DAY COULD not get any worse, or so Adriano thought after he ended the call with Emily. He grabbed his jacket and left the house without Iris.

He got into his car and drove out, heading first to Avery's office. When he parked and looked, he saw that it was locked. She was not around.

Growling in frustration, he got back into his car and tried calling her again. She did not pick until the phone stopped ringing. He reversed out, and took the highway leading to her house.

He did not want to, but he did not have any other choice. If she was not going to speak to him on the phone, he was going to speak to her in the house.

When he got to her driveway, the memories from the previous night came flashing back. He gripped his steering wheel tightly until his knuckles flashed white. Taking a deep breath to gather his thoughts, he got out of his car and stormed her door.

He banged on the front door for a long while before he realized that she was not in the house too. He took in deep

~AVERY~The picture was everywhere, I couldn’t escape it. Adriano and Clarance, standing too close, his hand almost brushing hers, his smile too easy, the headlines plastered across the screen like they were proud to tear me open. I sat stiffly on Emily’s couch, unable to look away, even when my throat burned. When she finally grabbed the remote and muted the TV, the silence pressed in heavier than the voices had. My phone lit up again on the table, Adriano’s name flashing, buzzing against the wood like it was mocking me, and still I didn’t reach for it.Emily shifted beside me, her voice careful, soft, “You’re really not going to pick up?”I forced my eyes off the screen, shaking my head. “No. Why should I?”She looked like she wanted to argue but hesitated, her lips pressing together before she tried again. “Because maybe he has an explanation. It might not be what it looks like.”I let out a sharp laugh, too brittle to sound real. “It’s always not what it looks like. Isn’t that t

ADRIANOHE KNEW WHAT he had to do. He stood up from the floor and took in a deep breath. He was going to stand physically with Avery, look her in the eye and explain how Clarance had set him up.He snatched his car keys and was about to leave the house before he remembered that Iris would be all alone because he sent Nana away for the day.Cursing under his breath, he took tortured steps up the stairs to Iris's room. He could hear her inside as he knocked, but she did not open the door. She was angry at him, feeling betrayed, and understandably so. He needed to speak with Avery, but she was not picking his calls. The two females dearest to his heart shut him out, and it hurt more than he expected it would. He realized that he did not have Emily's number too, but he had her fiancé's business card. He immediately rushed to the laundry room. Knowing Nana, she would have already started the laundry as soon as he dropped the clothes last night. And he was right. The clothes were dry clean

ADRIANOADRIANO STAYED CROUCHED, staring at the empty space where she’d been. His chest burned. The warmth from earlier, the laugh, the promise of something like a family moment was gone, torn from him in seconds. He pressed his palms to the cold tile, forcing himself up. His jaw was tight enough to crack. Clarance. This was her. It had to be her. She had never cared about subtlety, and now she had her perfect opportunity, a well-placed hand, a fake smile, and a camera flash. Enough to plant doubt in anyone watching. Enough to reach Iris. Enough to reach Avery. She had planned all of this. He was sure she had planted the cameraman there to perfectly capture and "leak" the photos. His phone buzzed again. The sharp vibration cut through the silence of the kitchen. He didn’t even want to look, but he already knew who it would be. His management. His PR team. The vultures who always circled when Clarance’s name and his ended up in the same sentence.Adriano grabbed it off the counter. “

ADRIANO.The day could have started any other way for Adriano. Maybe he would have woken up thinking back on Nana’s words, probably regretting his actions on sleeping with Avery and how it could possibly affect Iris, but no.No, Adriano woke up with a smile on his face and the thoughts of wedding bells in his mind. How great would it be, he thought, to propose to Avery? That night with her was no mistake. He couldn’t see it as one when her face was the first image that came to his mind every morning, and the last before sleep claimed him. Avery Quinn. She had come into his life for Iris, but somewhere along the line she had claimed a piece of him too. He was not a man who believed in chance, but with her, he had stopped questioning.Adriano pulled himself out of bed, his bare feet hitting the cold marble. Sunlight was barely spilling through the curtains, muted and soft. It was a weekend. No boardroom. No suit. No mergers or men in ties calling him “sir” every second of the day. For

AVERYI WOKE UP aching in places I had forgotten I had. I stretched and felt a muscle between my legs spasm. I smiled and rolled around, expecting to touch Adriano beside me, but I was met by the cold sheets on my bed.My eyes snapped open. He was gone. All of him. There was not any proof that he had been here. It was like the night we shared was all in my head. If not for the faint scent that lingered on the bed, I would think so.I stood up, clutching the bedsheets to my chest as I went to the window. The sun was up and bright. I had overslept, because I slept late.I frowned slightly, this must be how he felt when I ran away from his hotel room all those years ago.Did he think this was a mistake? I asked myself as I poured out the old coffee and put in a fresh one.I picked up my phone, tempted to call him, just to hear his voice, but I closed my eyes, fought my willpower and dropped the phone on the bed.If he thought this was a mistake for him, I would comply with him and treat
