HE PUT THE thick toe of his shoe, stopping the door from closing fully and pushed his way through. "Avery, can we talk?" He asked.

"Please step outside for a moment, Mr Mancini.”

I didn’t give him more than a glance, my voice clipped as I walked closer and gently started to close the door in his face. His gaze lingered on me but again, I wasn't looking.

I turned back to Iris and went to sit across from her with my best smile on.

“So, Iris. How are we feeling today?”

She sat across from me, unusually quiet, her gaze on the floor for longer than I expected.

Finally, she whispered, “I saw the picture.”

My heart sank. “You did?” I cleared my throat. “How…did that make you feel?”

She nodded, her voice barely audible. “It made me feel like maybe my dad is going to leave again. Like he doesn’t want to stay.”

The ache in her words cut deeper than anything I’d felt all weekend. I leaned forward, covering her hand with mine. Even if Adriano lied to me, he was a good father.
