Two days later, Hilda returned or so everyone thought.

She entered Hayden’s office quietly, her heels clicking softly against the marble floor. But Hayden was unaware of her presence.

He stood with his back turned, focused on looking across the window.

She tiptoed closer and pressed a kiss to his cheek.

Startled, he jerked slightly, but when his eyes landed on her, his lips softened into a smile.

“You scared me,” he said.

“What were you thinking about?” Hilda asked, playfully brushing her finger down his tie.

“Nothing. Just brainstorming on some unfinished business.” He said, his voice lacked the conviction to be believed.

“I tried calling you. Where’d you dump your phone?” Hayden asked.

“Oh, forgot it at my mom's place for days,” she mumbled, turning away, but not fast enough for her to miss the hint of distraction in his eyes.

“I’m glad you’re back,” Hayden added. “How did it go?”

Hilda sighed and moved to the couch. “They haven’t caught anyone yet. Everything’s gone. I’m starting f

Hayden didn’t stop even when Briella called after him. He followed the faint cries down the hallway, pausing only when he reached a slightly open door decorated with tiny paper butterflies.Inside, the room was soft and sunlit, filled with the scent of baby powder. Elsa's small figure sat on the edge of the crib, face scrunched up, tears glistening on her chubby cheeks.“Hey…” Hayden whispered, stepping closer. “What’s all this noise, huh?”Elsa looked up at him, startled. For a second, she stopped crying, her big brown eyes blinking up at the unfamiliar face.Hayden crouched, lowering his voice even more. “Your mom’s downstairs, okay? She’ll be here soon.”But when he reached his hand toward her, she surprised him, she didn’t flinch. Instead, she reached back, small fingers curling around his thumb.Something in Hayden’s chest shifted. And he suddenly remembered when Rissa held her captive. He had seen Briella’s eyes in that little girl before, but now, looking at her closely, it was

Briella stood by the door for a long moment, frozen. Her fingers hovered over the handle. She hadn’t expected to see today. When she finally opened the door, Hayden stood there. His shirt was half way bottomed and a little rumpled, eyes shadowed from lack of sleep. For a brief second, something flashed across Briella’s face like a hint of guilt but it vanished as quickly as it came.Without a word, she turned and walked back toward the kitchen.Hayden remained by the doorway, his chest tight, watching her move. He wanted to say something but every word that came to mind felt wrong. He followed quietly. When they reached the kitchen, she reached for a chopping board, pretending not to notice his presence.“Can you wait and let’s talk?” he asked finally, his voice low, almost pleading.“I’m cooking,” she murmured, not looking at him. Her throat bobbed slightly as she swallowed the tightness gathering there.“I’ll wait,” he said, pulling out a chair. He wasn’t planning to leave until the

Hayden couldn’t sleep, he’d spent most of the night staring at his phone, the blue glow painting the ceiling as the hours crawled by. Every notification that popped up made his chest tighten, but none of them were her.No reply or missed call. Nothing.By seven, his head throbbed from too much thinking and not enough rest. He ran a tired hand down his face, exhaling heavily before unlocking his phone again. He typed, erased, typed again.Everything sounded wrong. Can we talk? Are you okay? Please don’t shut me out.He deleted them all. It wasn’t like they were together. He had no right to demand an explanation, and yet her silence, sharp and absolute gnawed at him in a way he couldn’t ignore. Finally, he wrote something simple.Hayden: Morning Brie. Can we meet later? Just want to see you.He stared at the message long after sending it, half-expecting it to vanish into the same void as the rest.A knock at the door broke his thoughts.“Room service,” someone called from outside. He m

Her fingers trembled around her phone. She wanted to blink and realize she’d misunderstood what she was seeing, that maybe the woman was a client, a colleague, anyone else. But the easy way Hayden smiled at her, the small familiarity in his gestures said otherwise. Her stomach twisted. She gazed away and took a shaky breath, forcing her feet to move.It was ridiculous to just stand there, waiting for an explanation that wasn’t hers to demand. Her phone buzzed again.Kristen: Don’t tell me you chickened out?Briella swallowed hard, her throat tight. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard before she typed quickly.Briella: Heading home. Something came up.She hit send before her courage could falter.Turning away, she forced her legs to move, each step feeling heavier than it should.By the time she reached the car stand, her chest ached like she’d run miles.Everywhere blurred a little from the sting in her eyes or the sinking in her stomach, she couldn’t tell. She pressed a hand agains

Butterflies moved in her stomach.Briella: You saw me less than twelve hours ago.Hayden: Yeah. And that’s twelve hours too long. Her breath hitched, her eyes lingering on his message. She could almost hear him saying it, that quiet sincerity in his voice that always made her walls melt. She smiled before she could stop herself. Hayden: By the way, are you still thinking about my proposal?Briella sent a funny sticker.Kristen’s voice pulled her back to the kitchen. “Thank God I have a boyfriend, I’d have been intimidated.”“Can you guys just let me be,” Briella muttered, though the corners of her mouth wouldn’t stop lifting.Crystal gave her a knowing look over her mug. “Mm-hmm. Guess I’m the only one left out now.”Rolling her eyes, Briella reached for the coffee pot. “Hayden wants to meet up today, but I can’t leave Elsa.” “Don’t overthink it, Brie. If you want to see him, just go.” Kristen muttered. “You’ve been through enough to deserve a little joy.” She smiled gently. “We’ll

The morning light slipped through the curtains, entering Briella’s eyes. She groaned and buried her head deeper into the pillow. Her whole body still ached from last night’s activities. She could still feel Hayden’s heartbeat, his voice, his kisses, his touch She opened her eyes slowly, For a moment, she just lay there, staring at the ceiling, smiling before she even realized she was. It felt strange and her heart felt lighter, like something heavy had finally been lifted from her chest.A knock came at the door.“Briella.. Brie?” Kristen’s voice came up playfully drawn out. “Are you alive in there?”Briella mumbled into the pillow, “Barely.”Yesterday she was able to dodge them and their questions but she wouldn't for too long now.“I’ll take that as a yes,” Crystal said, her tone teasing. “You better come down before Crystal drinks all the coffee. Oh, and Elsa’s been up since dawn crying.. The nanny couldn't stop her. I couldn't stop her.You might want to check on her before she c
