The wheels of the plane screeched against to a stop jolting Briella out of her thoughts. It was Ten a.m in California time. The place was filled with memories she had tried so hard to leave behind.

Crystal and Kristen were waiting at arrivals, their arms flung open, with wide smiles plastered across their faces.

“You shouldn’t have come all the way,” Briella pouted as they crushed her in a bear hug. “I know you girls have a thousand other things to do.”

“It’s fine,” Crystal waved off, brushing back her hair with a grin. “We wanted to.”

“Why all the lies Violet?” Violet’s throat bobbed as she swallowed. “I.. I’m not lying.”He pushed back his chair and stood, looming over her. “You wanted to trap me in a loveless marriage? You thought I wouldn’t find out?” His gaze dropped briefly to her stomach before he shook his head bitterly. “Were you ever pregnant Violet… were you?” he yelled. Her lips trembled, her hands twisting together. “Brian please.. I lost the baby.”“And I'm supposed to believe that? With these despicable acts of yours,” he spat, “you actually thought I would ever be with you? You will never be a match for Briella. Never.”“Please,” Violet’s voice cracked. She sank to her knees, clutching his hand. “Forgive me, Brian. I just didn’t want to lose you.“At that moment, the door burst open. Heavy footsteps echoed across the floor, followed by the cold command of authority.“Miss Violet,” one officer announced, stepping forward with a badge in hand, “you are under arrest for the attempted murder of Miss Br

Brian tightened his grip on the metal rod, his knuckles pale against the rust. His voice was steady, though his chest pounded.“I won't tell you twice.”The man holding Violet only smirked. His fingers dug into her arm until she winced. “Are you deaf, pay our balance. Don't try to play the hero, else you'll regret it.”Brian didn’t answer. He took a step forward, his eyes fixed on the man’s wrist. The leader shoved Violet aside and came at him with a wild swing. Brian ducked and drove the rod hard into the man’s ribs. A grunt tore out of him as he staggered back, cursing. Two others jumped in at once. One grabbed for Brian’s shoulder, the other swung from the side. Brian shoved the first off and blocked the second with his forearm. The impact stung, but he pivoted quickly, smashing the rod against the attacker’s knee. The man howled, collapsing onto the dusty floor.Violet scrambled to the corner, clutching her head with shaking hands as blood flowed out, her breath shallow and panick

Briella woke in the middle of the night, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths, a nightmare had yanked her out of sleep. Her cheeks were damp with tears.“Jaylen…” she called out. Fresh tears spilled, and soon her sobs filled the quiet room.A knock echoed against the door. She didn’t answer. Her body curled in on itself and she trembled. After more knocks, the door creaked open and Hayden stepped inside, his tall frame shadowed in the dim light. He crossed the room quietly, stopping only when he was right in front of her.Briella didn’t notice until she lifted her head, her eyes swollen.“Why did you lie to me?” Her voice cracked.Hayden crouched down so his face was level with hers, reaching for her hands. She jerked them away, scooting back until the distance between them was filled with her tears. He rubbed the back of his neck, his jaw tight. “Do you remember Jaylen’s last words? He asked me to look after you. You and the baby. That’s what I did. That’s what I’ll keep

That night, Briella refused to let go of Hayden. Her small frame curled against his chest. He held her stiff at first, then softer when her breathing evened out.Eventually, she drifted into sleep. Her cheek rested over his heart, and with every rise and fall of his chest, she whispered his brother’s name in her dreams. Hayden lay wide awake staring at the ceiling. He couldn’t shake the feeling off. She wasn’t clinging to him but not really. She was holding onto a ghost. At dawn, the pale light of morning slid through the curtains. Hayden hadn’t slept, but he didn’t move. When Briella stirred, stretching slightly and rubbing at her swollen eyes, he slipped free as gently as he could not to wake her.By the time she sat up, he returned with a tray of freshly baked bread, fruit, and a light broth.“You should eat something,” he said quietly, placing it by the bed.She blinked at the food, then at him, and gave a faint smile. “You’re fussing too much.”“You need strength. For you and…” H

Briella’s knees gave way, her body crashing to the cold floor. “No!” she screamed, her palms slamming against the tiles. “No, it can't be true!”Kristen dropped to her side, trying to hold her shoulders. “Briella please..”But Briella fought against her grip. Her sobs turned into choking wails that shook her whole body. “He promised me! He promised that he wouldn’t leave me! He can’t die now..” Her fists pounded weakly against her chest. “He can’t be gone.”Brian crouched down, his voice trembling, but she shoved him back, her cries echoing through the corridor. “Don’t touch me! Don’t touch me! Bring him back!”Her voice cracked into a howl, shattering whatever calm had been left in the hall. Some nurses rushed forward, trying to help, but Briella’s grief was feral and uncontrollable.“Please!” she sobbed, her body shaking violently. “Please don’t take him from me… not after everything.”Her vision blurred, her chest heaving until black spots clouded her sight. Her body folded in on
