Chapter 23

Author: Lean
Otherwise, the Frost Group wouldn't have ended up directly in Ryan's hands.

"What about you? Are you happy?" I looked up and asked hesitantly.

"In these three years of being married to you?" He forced a smile, sighed, and continued, "I'm very happy."

His answer made me want to cry even more.

Was that regret?

Clearly, if it weren't for Jessica, we could have grown old together.

On the way back, neither of us spoke. We silently understood that saying more wouldn't help.

He couldn't truly change the situation, and I couldn't pretend everything was fine.

It was better to let go, while we still weren't too repulsive of each other.

With the short days and long nights of Autumn, through the car window, his figure was bathed in a golden light by the setting sun.

"I'll walk you up." When we reached the Lake Garden, he spoke before I could. I didn't refuse.

We went upstairs together, standing at the door, I pursed my lips. "I'm home now, you should go back."

"Alright." Ryan nodded li

Jack either didn't catch the implication, or he didn't want to dwell on the matter. He just smiled. "No big deal. Why don't you guys go wash your hands? Dinner is ready."Jack was also a great cook, and the table was filled with dishes that were great in looks, fragrance, and taste. It would make anyone's mouth water. Both Tom and Jane couldn't stop praising Jack.I couldn't help but compliment, "Jack, your dishes look amazing!""Go ahead and have a bite. See if it suits your taste."Jack brought out the last two dishes from the kitchen, and placed a plate of spicy shrimp in front of me, with a warm smile. "You should love this."I was a little surprised.Except for Jane, everyone assumed my taste was as bland as Ryan's. However, before I could say anything, Ryan chimed in coldly, "She can't handle spicy food. Although you were quite close during college, you still don't understand her taste...""Mr. Frost." Jane tried to defend me with a smile on her face. "Who have you been p

The two of them also prepared gifts for me. Jack also handed me an exquisite gift box. "Hope you like it.""Thank you, Jack," I thanked him with a smile.Seeing a delicately unique dress inside the box, I was a bit surprised and looked at him, "Did you design this?""Yeah, just this one." Jack smiled."Jack is so thoughtful!"After Jane finished praising them, she intentionally teased Ryan, "Mr. Frost, since you came to attend the housewarming party, I'm sure you brought a gift too, right?"I wanted to interrupt, but was stopped by Jane.Even before I stepped into the house, I didn't know they had prepared a housewarming party for me, so how could Ryan have prepared a gift in advance?Ryan fixed his dark eyes on me and reached into his suit pocket, taking out a velvet square box and placing it in front of me.He concealed the surge of emotions in his eyes, and the curve of his lips seemed shallow. "I couldn't find the opportunity to give it to you before, but it seems like now

Thinking back, I found such a thought ridiculous. On my wedding night, I was left alone. Several times on my birthday, my husband was absent. The gifts I longed for were given to others. Even on the day of my prenatal checkup, my husband went to accompany someone else. Now that we reached the point of divorce, he couldn't accept it when my friends came to throw me a housewarming party. I smirked and looked down at him. "If you don't leave, I'll call Jessica."He wouldn't be able to handle the situation if Jessica came over.Ryan suddenly tightened his grip around my waist, resting his forehead on my chest, his voice was hoarse. "Charlotte, I never wanted things to turn out like this, really." With him like this, my heart couldn't help but soften. At that moment when I wanted to speak, his phone, casually placed on the dining table, rang. The caller ID displayed "Jessica".Such a sight sent shivers down my back and I immediately became sober. I pushed him away. "You've got a ca

"Do you really want to thank me?" Jack walked to the car, pushed Tom into the back seat, leaned against the car, and looked at me with a smile and lowered eyes.I nodded. "Of course.""Then promise me, don't always say 'thank you' to me in the future." This remark had a slightly unusual flavor. Before I could figure out what he meant, he added with a smile, "It makes things too formal."I chuckled. "Alright, got it."He got into the car as well and then said, "I'm leaving, you should head back upstairs now."When I went upstairs, the living room was empty. Ryan wasn't there. I felt my heart sank for a moment. But just for a moment. Leaving silently was his style. It was probably another "urgent matter" from Jessica's side.Back in the bedroom, I gently patted Jane. "Jane, wake up. I'll help you change into pajamas so you can sleep more comfortably.""Mm." Jane moaned slightly, and upon seeing me, she reached out to hug me, letting me take off her top. She then murmured, "Charlot

Her words might have had some effect on me if she said them a while ago, but now that I had accepted facts like "Ryan had never had any feelings for me", I no longer had the urge to question her. I just looked at her calmly and said, "You seem to have everything under control, so why bother harassing me every day?"She came to my office early in the morning and made it seem like she was the wife and was interrogating the mistress. Seeing my indifferent reaction, Jessica became a little anxious. Without waiting for me to ask, she spoke triumphantly, "It's because of me."She leaned forward on my desk as if looking at a defeated opponent. "Charlotte, if it weren't for me, he wouldn't have married you! You wouldn't even have had the chance to set foot in their house!"After hearing those words, I clenched my fists and an indescribable feeling arose in my heart, causing it to race. She curved her red lips in satisfaction, and crossed her arms over her chest. "My back hurts so much..." She nestled in Ryan's arms, crying as she complained, "I just asked about her progress at work, and she pushed me... Ryan, can't you just let her be the director? Everyone else supports her too. I really don't want to work in this kind of environment anymore."Listening to her, I couldn't help but admire her skill at making up lies. I almost burst out laughing, but then I met Ryan's scrutinizing gaze."Is that so?" His voice was icy, sending a chill down my spine.I chuckled self-deprecatingly. "If I say it's not true, would you believe me?""Ryan..."Jessica's eyes welled up with tears, her delicate fingers tugging at his collar. This suit was one I personally designed and tailored for him. It was a gift I gave him for Valentine's Day this year.He didn't answer my question. Instead, he just lowered his gaze to the woman in his arms, furrowing his brow. He seemed impatient but concerned as he said, "You're not a child. Crying like this after a fall? Le

I was startled by the sudden noise. Only then did I touch my ears. The blood had already dried and some red scabs came off. The touch brought back a twinge of pain to my ears.My ears were bleeding and I didn’t even notice.Jane patted my hand. "Why are you so stubborn? Doesn't it hurt?"With that, she took out an iodine cotton swab from her bag, tied my hair up, and carefully disinfected my ears. "How did this happen?""Jessica tried to pull my earrings off." I briefly explained the situation to her.Jane cursed angrily, "Who the hell does she think she is? I swear to god she’s a nosy bitch. She loves sticking her nose into other people’s businesses. She even wants to take things that don’t belong to her. What a thief.""Why do you always know how to curse people?" After Jane’s bombardment, my gloomy mood from earlier in the day lifted a little.Jane glared at me. "With a friend like you, I have to learn how to curse.""Oh."I waited for Jane to take care of my ears. The

It wasn't worth the trouble.Jane forced herself to calm down. "Alright then. Let's make the payment and leave. I don't want to see them."After making the payment, the salesperson led us to the front of the store to see the car. After being in repairs for so many days, all the traces of the car crash disappeared. It looked just like a brand-new car."Wait a sec. I need to use the bathroom."With that said, Jane rushed to the toilets.I smiled and decided to wait for her in the car.As soon as I got in, I heard someone order with a beautiful voice, "I want that car!"Whatever car she liked had nothing to do with me.I closed the door and planned on leaving as soon as Jane returned. What I didn't expect was that a salesperson came knocking on my window first.I lowered the window a little and asked impatiently, "What is it?""Hello, one of our customers wants to take a look at your car. Will that be alright?""I don't just want to take a look at it. I want to buy it," Jessi

Whitney had nothing to say.Even if Caleb's accusations were unreasonable, even if he was deliberately making things difficult, she still had to go along with it—and endure it."I'll keep that in mind."Caleb didn't feel any joy at her answer, but he still asked, "What exactly will you keep in mind?"Whitney replied obediently, "If the same thing happens again, I'll either send you a text or call you."Beneath his large palm was her small, soft hand. He brushed his thumb slowly across her skin and asked, "If I'm not home by six in the evening, what will you do?"Whitney answered with surprising seriousness, "Does a traffic jam count?"Caleb took a deep breath. "No. Let's say it's a normal day, I should be home on time, but I don't show up.""Oh..." Whitney nodded thoughtfully. "Then I'll call you and ask why you haven't come home."‘Good enough.’This topic could be put to rest.He released her hand and said, "I'm thirsty."Whitney immediately got up to pour him a glass of

"Perfect."Caleb was rendered speechless.Half an hour later, Whitney arrived at the hospital room.It was clear she had rushed over—she was still breathing heavily, chest rising and falling with each gulp of air.Caleb felt a pang of guilt for tricking her like this. He was just about to sit up when his mother pressed him back down.Janet's eyes reddened instantly, tears threatening to fall at will.Business was like war—and in war, sometimes a bit of acting was essential. After all, his mother had spent years navigating the cutthroat world of commerce. Her acting skills were easily on par with half the entertainment industry."Darling..."Whitney still looked confused. She stepped closer and saw Caleb's lips pale and bloodless. He had been perfectly fine just last night—how had it come to this so suddenly? And he hadn't even drunk that much at the Hilton family dinner.Far less than what he had consumed at their wedding, in fact."Mom, please don't cry..." Whitney helped

Since they got married, this had never happened before.Though Caleb was a busy man, his parents hadn't completely stepped back from the family business yet, so he didn't need to clock in every day.He only went in for important matters, or meetings he couldn't avoid. But at night, he was always home.In the morning, he always got up at the same time as her.She had early classes at eight in the morning.Still, she didn't overthink it, assuming something urgent had come up at the last minute.Caleb was indeed at the office that morning. But there was absolutely nothing on the schedule. No one could understand why the he had shown up so early, sitting alone at his desk doing nothing.Philip pushed open the door to his office and found Caleb slouched lazily on the sofa.He raised his hand to stop the secretary from reporting anything. The secretary quickly nodded, stepped out, and shut the door behind her."Had an argument?"Philip didn't think that was likely. After all,

There was no rush.Whitney deeply admired Dianne's way of living—a strong mind, never anxious, never consumed by internal battles.Whatever came her way, she simply found a way to deal with it.She believed there were always more solutions than problems."Are you tired?"Caleb sat down beside her. "Do you want to go back and rest?"They had just flown back from an island. When they got off the plane, Whitney had barely been able to walk on her own.If not for this dinner with the Hilton family—one they truly couldn't skip—she would have preferred to go straight home and sleep. But since no one had left, she couldn't excuse herself either, and had just waited quietly. Now that Caleb asked, she hesitated, then nodded. He took her hand and helped her up, then said to the rest of the family, "We're heading back first. Just got back from out of town, and we're both exhausted."Lia nodded. "Come by more often."Whitney nodded politely.Caleb led her to the entryway to change th

The man who had just sat down was Caleb's younger cousin, Blake Hilton. He was a police officer. His parents had died in the line of duty. The Hilton family had originally not wanted him to follow the same path. But he had chosen it anyway, without hesitation.Whether it was because of his profession, or the fact that his own parents were no longer around — even though the Hilton family was tightly bonded — he remained quiet and reserved.Whitney wasn't much of a talker either, so she had barely exchanged more than a few words with him.Besides, every time the family had a meal, he was always the last to arrive. She had long since gotten used to it, never questioning why.Lately, though, she had heard rumors that he had fallen for someone. She had noticed the slap mark on his face at the last family gathering. And this time, his aunt had used the word "again".Blake said nothing. The others understood without needing to say a word, but Dianne had always been the type to spea

She really hadn't expected that someone could ask their parents for pocket money so brazenly. She had never seen it before. It truly opened her eyes."Are you okay?" Janet quickly patted her back to help her catch her breath, while Caleb pulled out a tissue and gently wiped her mouth.Whitney, embarrassed, said, "I'm sorry, I...""What are you apologizing for?" Caleb casually wiped the table as well. "It's nothing. Everyone chokes on water now and then.""Exactly," Millie chimed in cheerfully. "I choked on water just yesterday.""Alright, enough talking. Bring out the dishes and let's eat!" Lia called out, setting a plate of food in front of Whitney. "Try this and see if you like it."Whitney had always felt that, to the Hilton family, she was an outsider. So every time she came over, she couldn't help but feel nervous and constrained.Especially facing so many elders, she was neither sweet-tongued nor good at small talk.Every time, it was Caleb who managed all the social i

Whitney quickly stood up and called out, "Aunt Stephanie."Stephanie curved her lips into a smile and nodded."Stephanie!" Lia said as she came out of the kitchen. "How come you’re here by yourself? Where's Steve?"Steve Hilton was Lia’s eldest son and also Stephanie’s husband."He had something to take care of and will be a bit late. We can start eating first."She looked at Millie and asked, "Millie, what were you saying about me?"Millie immediately tattled, saying that Gilbert had bullied her.Stephanie didn't even ask for details, she just swung her fist and punched Gilbert. She had trained before, so the punch was solid and strong. But Gilbert had also trained, and he had grown up. Otherwise, if it had been when he was little, he wouldn't have been able to take it.This kind of situation had often happened when Millie was young — as long as the little girl cried and complained, he would get beaten by his own mother."I don’t think she’s your daughter-in-law. Whitney wanted to thank Georgina through Millie, but Georgina said there was no need. However, simply having a meal together was acceptable.Up to now, they had only eaten together once. She wasn't very good at interpersonal interactions. On top of that, she had been busy with work early on and had gone on a business trip for a while, and almost all of her remaining time had been taken up by Caleb."Whitney, if you have time, I'd like to ask Georgina out for a meal. Sorry to trouble you.""No problem. Georgina told me that she’s missed you as well."Whitney didn't know what to say, so she could only force a smile.Millie already knew her personality and didn't mind, continuing to talk about amusing things on her own.She even asked how the wedding had gone for her this time.Whitney said, "It was great.
