A million butterflies had settled into my belly. I arrived at the luxury grand ball room alone, dressed in a stunning golden gown that I was sure Derek would love. Derek and I had been married for three years in secret, due to his life and his work situation. If more than anything I was happy to be his wife, in public or private. But today was the day he would announce our marriage to the world. I could barely keep my smiles down as I paced the hall. Time ticked by, and the hall began to fill with guests. Men dressed in exquisite tuxedos. And the ladies in designer gowns. Yes there was no sign of Derek . My skin crawled as these men stared at me with lustful looks in their eyes. As far as they were concerned, I was Derek’s mistress. And none of them would dare touch me knowing that. Yet, I felt uncomfortable under their eyes. This banquet was thrown by Derek to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Leonardo group. All his friends and partners are here. But only I knew that he would announce our wedding today. The thought alone made me giddy. About an hour later, the grand doors swung open and Derek walked in. My heart skipped a beat as I saw my husband. Tall and dashing, his blond hair swept back, his blue eyes stunning as a clear afternoon sky. I took a step forward, about to greet him with a smile. Suddenly I froze. There was a woman behind him. They walked in together, and he didn't even glance at me. Murmurs rose into the air, and everyone rushed to their side. They greeted the woman fondly, smiling and shaking her hand. "Who is she?" I asked the person closest to me. The man turned to me. “You don't know her?! That's Anna Silver. The famous supermodel!” I stared at the lady. My heart thumped so hard I feared it'd burst. Who cares if she's a supermodel or not? I just want to know why she walked in with my husband! "It turns out that Derek was late to pick her up. Derek really didn't forget her. It seems that today's banquet is a welcoming banquet held by Derek for her.” the man further said. That's not why he threw this banquet! I wanted to shout the words. I grabbed a champagne flute and drank it all, trying to calm my racing heart. Derek had his arm around Anna's waist as they talked to guests. Together they looked so stunning. My heart wrenched. I pieced together their love story from bits and pieces of information from people around me, how much they loved each other and how inseparable they were, but he never mentioned it to me, not even once. Dance music suddenly started to play and everyone took to the dance floor. My stomach twisted and tears pricked my eyes as Derek and Anna danced, the whole guests smiling and cheering them on. Suddenly, Anna twisted her ankle and fell. Derek hugged her and carried her out of the hall. Murmurs rose in the air, mingled with the clinking of champagne glasses and mocking laughter. I felt exposed, like a spotlight had been shone on me. I stood and watched Derek leave with Anna without turning his head, never glancing once at me. There were boos and sneers from the crowd. I don’t know who said loudly: "Since Mr. Leonardo has abandoned you, would you consider becoming my mistress? I will take care of you!" That was all it took. Amid the growing laughter, I ran out of the banquet hall and rushed home. I tried to be strong and hold it in, but the tears came rushing anyway. The memories flooded my mind. Whenever I was in trouble and asked for help, they all advised me to be a mistress. But Derek loved me, and asked me to marry him. he respected me at least. Or so I thought. Instead he hid our relationship. But he hadn't ever been bad to me. He provided for me, and he was kind to me. Maybe it's all a misunderstanding. Maybe they're just friends. I don't know how long I sat there like that until Derek came back and I tried to get up to greet him, only to realize my feet were numb. “Derek,” I said, my voice cracking. "Darling," He sighed. He walked up to me and planted a bold kiss on my lips. My eyes widened. He kissed me hard, his lips warm against mine. Tingles ran down my spine and my eyes fluttered shut. He began to tug on my gown, trying to get it off me. "Derek," I gasped softly. "Hold on." I said. I turned to get the zip and he hugged me, his jaw resting on my shoulder. I shivered, feeling his warmth and hardness pressed to my back all at once. A scent caught my attention. A woman's perfume. Soft, delicate, flowery. A strange perfume that wasn't mine. Bile rose in my throat and I shoved Derek away from me. I felt like I was going to vomit. I looked up and met his gloomy gaze. The sight startled me, I knew this was a sign that he was angry about something. “I feel a little uncomfortable.” I explained quickly. He stared at me, his eyes scanning my face closely. I wished he would say or do something. "Actually," he started to say. His phone suddenly rang. I glanced at it but couldn't make out the caller. He picked it up. I couldn't tell what was being said. He frowned and walked out. "Derek!" I called out. He didn't turn. The door slammed, and he was gone.Derek’s POV:“Derek!” Anna exclaimed and rushed into my arms the moment I stepped into her private hospital room. I caught her and kept her an arms length away from me. She didn’t look like someone who had just attempted a suicide. Her hair was done perfectly and she had makeup on. Save for the hospital gown and the bandages on her wrists, I would have thought she was fine.“Anna, what in gods name are you trying to do!”Her eyes went big and she gasped. “Trying to do? What do you mean?”“You tried to kill yourself?!” I yelled. I couldn’t fathom why on earth she would do such a thing. I grabbed her wrists and shoved them in her face. They were covered with thick white bandages, and I grimaced thinking about her dragging a blade across them. “What is this? You want to send you parents to an early grave?”Her bottom lip wobbled and a tear rolled down her face. “You’re so mean to me, Derek, we weren’t always like this.”“Well times have changed, Anna. I told you the last time we met, its
Sally’s POV:Various scenes from my life played behind my eyes like a movie. Deep down I could hear an annoying persistent noise, but I couldn’t place where it was from. The air around me felt cold and had a strange smell in the air. What was it? My brain was too muddled to figure it out.The first scene was an office. I recognized it, the office of Mr Stanford, the owner of the dance trope I was a member of before I joined Unicorn. He smiled at me, his eyes leering and practically undressing me where I stood.“Yes, Miss Xavier. I can help you out. How much did you say you needed?” he’d said, stroking his pitiful excuse for a beard.“Five hundred thousand dollars,” I said with a shaky tone. “I promise to pay back, I just…”He had grabbed my arm, his eyes that of a dog that had seen a fresh piece of meat. I wanted to hurl and run away. “There is other way you can repay me, Miss Xavier,”Ah, I see.My memories. They’re playing in a feedback in my head. Are these my last seven minutes? D
Sally's POV:“Mr and Mrs. Armani, what is matter?” Derek asked calmly.Mrs. Armani tried to speak but ended up bursting into tears. Mr. Armani calmly stepped forward, one arm around her shoulders. “Please, you have to go and see Anna. Talk to her, anything you can do…it will be much appreciated. Anna just…she just tried to kill herself. She slit her own wrist… gods it was terrible. If we hadn’t found her in time and rushed her here, she would have died. She kept saying your name, over and over again. I beg of you, please see her.”Mr. Armani sounded so pained, and I wanted to feel sorry for him. But the mention of Anna’s name made my heart twist and a bad taste settle in my mouth. I subconsciously pushed myself closer to Derek and squeezed his hand. He turned to me, and a part of my heart splintered. I could see the crack in his face, the hesitation. Why is he hesitant? He should tell them that he’s busy right now. He’s with his wife about to see a doctor because of their baby.Sudden
Sally’s POV:“argh!” I nearly lost my grip on the steering wheel. I grit my teeth hard as I felt a pain in my lower stomach. At first it was a light jab, like I had eaten something my body didn’t agree with. Through my windshield I could see the rain slicked road, the heavens still had refused to let the rain stop. The pain started to get worse, to the point where I couldn’t ignore it.Suddenly a sharp pain exploded in my abdomen, like a hot dagger pressed into my flesh. I grabbed my stomach, and I could swear I felt the life inside me pulse into my hand.A chill filled my bones, cold and sharp. I forced myself to focus on the road ahead, even as my hands on the steering started to tremble. I grabbed on harder till my knuckles turned white. Each stab of pain felt like it was draining my strength. My eyes drifted and my arms nearly relaxed at my sides with how heavy they were getting.Keep your eyes on the road, Sally. I chanted it to myself like a mantra.Something is wrong with my b
Derek's POV:I watched Sally drive off, her taillights flashing in the rain. "Damn it." I cursed under my breath. This was so messed up right now! I immediately got into my car and started the engine. Suddenly the car door was pulled open. "Derek!" Anna cried. "Stop please!""What is it?" I asked impatiently. In the rearview mirror Sally's car had vanished down the road. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to ruin your relationship with Sally," Anna said in a trembling voice. "I was...I was just too sad and I drank a little too much and ruined everything."I pinched the bridge of my nose and sighed. "Anna it's okay. But make me mistake, this is the last time something like this will happen. "She nodded vigorously. "Yes,""No, you don't understand. Next time, I wouldn't care if you really died. I've told you before, it's over between us."Without the patience to wait for Anna's response, I slammed the door and immediately drove in the direction Sally left.It immediately crossed my mind to c
Sally’s POV:I walked hand in hand with my mom into the banquet hall. The night was quite chilly and the sky overcast with clouds. The scent of the garden hung lightly in the air. Due to the fact that it was still early, there weren’t a lot of cars parked outside. Mother and I walked into the hall.Inside was magnificent. The walls stretched high, covered in luxurious drapes. Three giant crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling, bathing the hall in a warm golden light. The tables were set with expensive china,. The live band was practicing in the corner, and a few staff ran about making sure everything was set.Tonight wasn’t just any banquet, it was a very special banquet. It was the night I was going to be introduced as the Chief of the Unicorn dancing troupe. It was the biggest turning point of my career. I could barely contain my excitement. As the minutes ticked by, more guests began to arrive. Music filled the hall and mingled with it the sounds of laughter and conversations. M
