The man picks up Aurora who is still sobbing with her lower lip out as she sniffles. He pulls at her cheeks as he smiles adoringly at her.
“Hey little one. I’m so sorry you fell”. He pats her hair.
He looks into her green eyes that remind him of hers. She finally smiles at him and someone else’s image comes into his mind.
He shakes his head trying to get rid of it. He reciprocates her smile. He turns to his sister with a huge smile. However, his sister looks impatient. Knowing the kind of person she is, he removes his phone from his pocket and sends a text to his driver.
“I just sent a text to the driver. He will be here soon. You can just go to the lounge to wait for him”. He informs her. She nods and leaves in the direction of the lounge without saying a word.
Caleb heaves a sigh of relief the minute she leaves. He had come to pick her up from the airport to prevent her from complaining about being abandoned later on.
He had even hoped that she would have helped him with the little girl. There was no single maternal bone in her body too.
He returns his face to the little girl in his arms.
“Hey. What is your name?”. She looks at him in silence for a few seconds. He almost concludes that she is mute until she cracks a toothy smile and speaks.
“Aurora”. He almost coos at her voice.
“You are very cute, Aurora.” He squeezes her cheek in fondness. Aurora places her chubby little hands on his cheeks, too, mirroring his action.
He chuckles at her action.
“Where is your mummy or daddy?”. He asks her. He knows she can not be here alone and whoever is here with her is worried sick.
At the question, her face turns sour and she starts crying. He starts to panic immediately trying to find a way to get her to stop crying.
He spots a cotton candy shop near them and an idea comes to him. He turns her in the direction of the cotton candy stand to put it in her line of view.
“Look! Do you want some cotton candy?”. He points at the stand. She rubs her eyes and follows his line of sight. Her eyes light up, which shows Caleb that he made the right decision.
“Pink! Pink!”. She points excitedly at it.
Pink? Well, a win is a win, he thinks to himself.
He goes to the cotton candy stand and buys one. After collecting it, he hands it to her. Wrong move to give such to a 3-year-old because it lands on the floor the second she carries it.
She starts a tantrum again and he knows that if he doesn’t get her another one soon, he will be in trouble. He gestures to the man who is making the cotton candy to make another one.
He takes out $50 from his wallet and hands it to the man.
“Oh sir. It’s just $10. I don’t have any change”.
“You can keep the change”. Caleb gives him a smile which the man reciprocates with a grateful nod.
In a few seconds, the cotton candy is ready. This time, he has learned his lesson, and he holds the stick with his left hand while allowing her to eat from it.
He starts walking away from the stand and looks for a chair to sit down. He decides to go to the immigration office with her once she is done with the cotton candy.
After making a mess of the whole thing, she finishes it with pink sugar all over her face. He uses his handkerchief to clean her face.
A part of him strangely wants to keep her but he finds it ridiculous because the kid is not even his. Her eyes though…. They remind him of his own eyes. And her smile? They look so much like that woman’s own.
He must be overthinking things now.
“Aurora, you want some water?”. She nods in response.
He bends down to take a bottle of water from the side of his bag. He opens it and helps her to drink it.
When she’s had her fill, he carries her up in his arms again.
“Mama”. She starts calling out again. She begins to rub her eyes again and he immediately knows that she is about to start crying.
“Yes, we are going to mummy, so no need to cry, okay?”. She nods and keeps quiet.
He gives her a peck on her cheek and starts walking. He pauses when he feels something on his cheek. He turns to her surprised.
“You like copying me, don’t you?”. He chuckles. She covers her mouth and lets out cute little giggles.
He cannot stop himself from hugging her, so he does it anyway.
“I am going to miss you, little one”. She smiles at him as if understanding him.
“Alright, let’s go find Mama,” He asks for directions to the immigration office.
Coincidentally, at the same time he is leaving the outdoor area of the airport, Ava starts calling out for Aurora through the mic.
Caleb only starts hearing her voice when he has almost reached the office. He knocks on the door and enters. Inside the office, two people, a man and a woman, seated behind a desk in uniforms.
“Good day. I came to ask if you could help me find this little girl’s mother. I found her lost and it doesn’t look like she can tell us her mother’s name right now. Her name is Aurora”. He tries to place her down into the chair but she holds on tightly to his shirt.
The woman looks amused at the scene.
“Are you sure that’s not your daughter you are trying to dump with us?”. Caleb laughs at her question.
He is about to reply when the door opens up. The person that steps in, leaves him utterly dumbstruck.
“Ava?”
“Mama!”. Aurora says with outstretched arms.
She was not comfortable with the way he had spoken to her over the phone. It seemed like something was wrong with him. She was standing in front of the building where she was about to drop Aurora. She had wanted Chris to go in with her but since he was big there with her, she had to go in by herself. She hated the feeling that she was having as she went there alone. She was attended to and they are so happy to have her daughter there. It was a smooth registration and she succeeded in keeping Aurora there. After making sure her daughter was fine, she headed to her shoot venue. She thought about Chris and how he did not sound okay over the phone. She wanted to go to his hotel room to find out what was wrong, but she had a shoot to be present on. " Ava, can we have you here?" One of the directors called her; she was torn between going after Chris, who did not sound okay, and going for her shoot. " I am not going to be here for a long time; something just came up, and I will have
She held her phone in her hands as she looked at the number, staring her back in the face. She wondered if it was necessary or if she could just go ask Ava if Caleb had been after her lately. " She is not going to answer me or tell me what I want to know," she sighed. She went ahead and dialed the number. She held the phone, waiting for him to pick it up. " Hey, how is it going with you?" She asked as soon as he picked up. " I'm good; it's been a while. Do you have a job for me?" his husked voice was heard from the other end of the phone. " Yes, can we meet up? I will send you the address" she said as she ended the call. She did not want the maid to know what she was talking about as she was still in Caleb's house. She turned her head and saw a maid standing close to her, she flew back in fear. Then she went closer to the maid. " Tell me, did you hear anything at all?" " I heard nothing, ma'am," she said fearfully. She did not want to believe the maid but she had to. She g
Ava Martin was on the screen as one of the top Actresses in the city. The shoot for that day was over and she was back home. She was in front of the television, watching the news, it was about her being so good at what she does. There was a bowl of popcorn in front of her and a cup of juice as well. She would dip her hands into the bowl and take some popcorn from it. She would also stretch herself to take the drink as well. Chris walked into the room. He had not gone yet, and that was because Aurora would not let him go; he had to follow them to the hotel room so he could please Aurora. " You are so good. Look who is on the screen again," he said. " They can not do without me, I happen to make the news, I'm the one always talked about" " I guess I manage you so well. Look who is being recognized again and again." he raised his shoulders up at how good he was at managing Ava. " I should get your pay increased," Ava burst out laughing. " That should not be a joke," he said. H
One would think that he was going to back down from going after her but no, it was not someone like Caleb Reed. He followed behind her like someone who was chasing after those who took something from him. His driver would look at him, expecting him to say something about them stopping and turning back but he kept a straight face. When he saw that his driver was stealing glances at him. He dropped his phone and looked at him. " Is anything the problem?" He asked him. " You will be late for work, should we not turn back and head to the office instead?" " The last time I checked, I was the one paying for your services, isn't that so?" " My apologies sir," he said as he slightly bowed his head. Caleb was a bit pissed with his driver, but his mood changed when he could see Ava clearly. A smile appeared on his face as his lips curved into a happy grin. His face turned into a frown almost immediately as he wondered why he was overly happy to see her. He thought to himself that he sho
Chapter 8When Caleb showed no intention of reciprocating the kiss, she tried to deepen it, but he pulled away. She attempted to lean in again, only to have him place a hand on her shoulder, keeping her at arm's length."Not tonight, Sophia," he said, causing her face to fall as he picked up her robe from the bed.Caleb walked back to Sophia and handed her the robe. "Put it on," he commanded, his voice firm yet calm."But—" Sophia began, but Caleb cut her off. "Just put it on, Sophia," he repeated, his tone more forceful this time, causing her to flinch.Reluctantly, Sophia took the robe from him and put it on, her forehead creased with frustration."I'm really tired. You should use the other room tonight," He stated, his words sounding like an order rather than a suggestion."But we always sleep together," Sophia protested, her fists clenched tightly. However, the seriousness in Caleb's expression made her think twice about arguing further."Okay," she conceded, forcing a smile. "Go
As she finished drying her hair, her phone began to ring, prompting her to pick it up to see who was calling. Noticing it was Chris, she answered the call promptly."Hey," Chris's calm and smooth voice greeted her as the call connected. "Are you settled in?""Yeah. Aurora just fell asleep," Ava responded, her gaze lingering on her daughter."I'm going out for lunch soon. Would you like to join me?""Sure. Just give me a minute to get dressed," Ava said, rising from the bed and walking towards the wardrobe to choose an outfit."Okay. I'll wait for you in the lobby," Chris replied before ending the call. After deciding on a simple casual outfit, Ava let her hair down and checked on Aurora once more before grabbing her bag and phone and leaving the room.Chris sat comfortably in the hotel lobby, his gaze fixed on his phone as he made necessary schedule changes for the upcoming movie shoot, scheduled in two days, while waiting for Ava to arrive. Finally, he caught a glimpse of her approac
