Chapter 3

Penulis: Anonymous
"You promised you'd spend Valentine's Day with me," I said. Celine didn't respond, but I saw her fingers curl up subconsciously. I could tell that she felt guilty.

After some time, I broke the silence once again, saying, "Let's just head home."

"I'm sorry," she whispered as the car began to move.

I rolled down the window and pretended like I didn't hear her. Then, I let the wind mess up my hair and brush the tears from my face. Fortunately for me, Celine couldn't see any of it.

The two of us stayed silent as the car sped down the road. As we were nearing home, I took a deep breath and composed myself. Subsequently, I opened the door and exited the vehicle.

Before I could even unlock the front door, I heard Will crying out from the inside of the house. Once I opened the door, he immediately threw himself into Celine's arms and exclaimed, "Mommy! You're finally home!"

He continued, "Dad locked me inside and wouldn't let me out. But I want to go to the amusement park!"

Upon hearing this, I froze. I didn't think that my child would be able to lie through his teeth like this. Celine paused and instinctively glanced toward me.

"He just didn't want to bring you there on his own. He didn't think that he'd be able to keep you safe. How about we both bring you to the amusement park today?"

She caressed Will's hair and explained on my behalf.

"I don't want him to go with me!" Will declared decisively. He turned away from me and rolled his eyes at me with obvious disdain.

I stared at this side profile and felt frozen in place. I had been trying to balance my work and my family, but it seemed like I had failed. As a result, my son was distant, and my wife didn't seem to love me.

I crouched down and reached forward to hold Will's hand. Then, I asked in a gentle voice, "You asked me to help you assemble a toy some time ago. Do you want to play with it together after I finish building it?"

Will finally turned his head over to look at me. Blinking at me, he nodded his head and replied, "Okay. But we can only do that after I get back from the amusement park."

His small promise warmed my heart. When I heard the door close, I glanced around the empty house and picked up Celine's phone once again.

"As long as you'll have me, my heart will always belong to you." I read the message out loud. The unsent message drafts contained Celine's feelings as a teenager.

"What about me?" I asked.

My fingers were trembling, but I still felt somewhat hopeful. Celine was 18 back then. Now, she was an adult with a family. She wouldn't have had a child with me if she didn't actually love me.

"I don't love him, so I had a child with him. I hoped that the child could love him for me, but the child takes after me, and he only loves you."

I felt my breath hitch in my throat. My vision became blurred, and my breathing began to grow heavy. Was this what she meant when she drunkenly claimed that the child was her gift to me?

Initially, I thought that she wanted us to have a child together. I assumed that our son was the proof of our love. But now, I could understand everything.

If I were still 18, I'd choose to walk away without a single shred of hesitation. But now, I had an adorable son and a family everyone envied.

I clenched my fists and returned to my room. As I stared up at the ceiling, tears began to stream down my face.

"You're a coward, James Sawyer!" I couldn't help but mock. Then, I eventually drifted off to sleep.

In my dream, I saw a young girl smiling at me as she stood in the sunlight. She waved at me before handing me a sketch that she had drawn just for me.

The girl only had eyes for me.

Once I woke up from my dream, I stared at the dark room around me and tried to locate the light switch. Crap! I hadn't assembled Will's toy!

I hurried downstairs, expecting to see my angry son. But to my surprise, the house was completely empty.

My vision blurred, and I slowed down. It was already 10:00 pm—why weren't they back yet?

"That's enough," I cut Will off sternly. As Ruby clenched her fists, I pulled her behind me and continued, "I'll always be your dad, Will."The certainty in my voice made Will break into a triumphant smile. However, once I completed the rest of my sentence, his expression immediately stiffened."However, I'll never return to you ever again," I declared. Will's eyes widened in shock. He walked toward me in disbelief and reached for my hand."We'll never be able to go back to the way things were." I yanked my hand away from him and tried to leave with Ruby.To my dismay, Celine reached out to grab my arm. "Will and I have been waiting for you to come home, James. "We're a family. As long as we sincerely admit to our wrongdoings, any mistake can be forgiven. Wasn't that what you told us?" she said in an appeasing manner."But we're not a family," I cut her off in a cruel voice. I found her desperate demeanor ridiculous and laughable. I took Ruby's hand and left without so much a

I didn't reply. Instead, I turned off my phone and shut my eyes. I had already arranged for someone to deliver Will's present to him. With Robert keeping him company, he probably didn't need me anymore. Noticing the shift in my mood, Ruby glanced at me nervously and asked, "Are we going to head back, sir?" She looked extremely anxious. She was probably afraid that our relationship would change if we went back. I patted her hand and said in a gentle voice, "No. We're going to a new place and starting a new life there."I continued, "If you want, I can be your dad. From this point onward, you'll be my only child. You can take my last name, and your new name will be Ruby Sawyer." I felt slightly nervous as I waited for her to respond. She held my hand and nodded firmly. "I'd be happy to."After we had arrived overseas, I didn't feel comfortable leaving Ruby at home alone. So, I brought her to work with me. To my surprise, I discovered her remarkable talent for photography.I pa

While I was waiting at the airport, two familiar figures appeared in my way. "I miss you, Dad. Can you please stay?" Will asked, staring up at me with a sad expression. He looked just like he did when he was still a newborn baby. I bent down and gently embraced him. I loved him, but the wound on my leg was still aching faintly. "I have to go." I let go of him. Then, I took a long, lingering look at him before finally turning to leave. Unfortunately, I didn't end up leaving the country. I didn't miss my flight because of Celine and Will; I missed my flight because of that young girl. My friend sent me a text. They claimed that the girl had been hospitalized after she got into a fight. I anxiously rushed to the hospital. When I caught sight of her fragile yet determined figure, my heart ached. This was all my fault—I shouldn't have left her alone. As it turned out, the young girl's name was Ruby Carson, and she was named after a precious gemstone. After the death of her par

I asked Celine to meet me at the coffee shop where we had our first date. Initially, I wanted to convince her to move quickly and amicably with the divorce. But to my dismay, she misunderstood my intentions.Celine and Will were sitting on the other end of the table. Her expression was just as gentle as it used to be. The sight of them looked almost picture-perfect. Unfortunately, Will was still sulking, and he refused to look at me. I glanced at him for a while longer before I finally turned my attention back to the divorce papers on the table. Celine had thoughtfully ordered my favorite coffee in advance. Smiling appeasingly, she pushed the beverage toward me and said, "I was foolish and deluded, James. I still believe that we can go back to the way we used to be." She paused and glanced at the boy next to her. "Besides, Will is only three. I don't want him to grow up in a single-parent household." "Give me custody of him then. I'll give him all the love he needs," I spat co

I walked down the dark street alone. Will was my own flesh and blood. Even if Celine had betrayed me, I believed that he would still choose to be on my side. Unfortunately, it seemed like no one actually cared about me. In hindsight, I had been nothing but a failure. As I was wallowing in self-mockery, I accidentally bumped into another person. "What are you doing here?" the two of us asked simultaneously.I stared at the girl's disheveled appearance and felt slightly puzzled. However, once I noticed the plastic bottle she was holding, I finally understood what was going on. Frowning, I recalled the shabby house she lived in and stared at her thin figure. She looked very young, yet she already bore the weight of life on her shoulders.I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Life was usually a lot harder on girls, too."It's late. It's not safe for you to be out here by yourself," I instinctively told her.She cut me off and replied, "But you're alone, too. Please make sure t

The next day, after getting everything sorted, I went back to Celine's place. Even though Will hurt my feelings yesterday, he was still my son. As long as he was willing, I'd be more than happy to take him with me.I made my way to Will's room. Before I could open the door, I heard someone speaking inside the room. "What's going to happen to Will after you divorce James? I don't think it's wise for a child to grow up in a single-parent household. "Are you going to look for another partner? Would you like me to be your new dad, Will?"Angered by what I had just heard, I immediately pushed my way in. In the room, Celine and Robert were sitting next to each other. Will, on the other hand, was playing with his toy cars a small distance away. The three of them looked just like a family. "I'm the only father Will will ever have," I declared. "I brought the divorce papers, Celine. I want full custody of our son. I'd like you to sign the papers right now.""You've got the wrong idea
