Chapter 2

Penulis: Anonymous
Robert was Celine's senior in college. On top of that, he used to be my superior. However, after I married Celine, I stepped back from my career and no longer kept in contact with him.

Like me, he was also infatuated with Lara Lawson. However, he was the man that Lara was in love with.

I told myself that Robert might be unaware of Celine's feelings. But despite that, I couldn't stop my hands from trembling.

"Stay at home and get some rest, Will. I'm going to go look for your mom."

Once I had recomposed myself, I started up my car and had no idea where to go. Afterward, I somehow ended up at Robert's home.

To my surprise, I actually saw Celine outside of his home. I began to follow her discreetly.

Once I remembered that she didn't return home last night, my heart sank. My wife, whom I hadn't seen since the day before, had spent her Valentine's Day with another man.

Celine was holding a bouquet of flowers. When I saw how ecstatic she looked, I clenched my fists and felt extremely dejected. We had been married for seven years, yet she had never once bought me flowers. Now, she was buying them for another man…

She suddenly stopped as if something had just occurred to her. When she turned around and saw me, she jumped in surprise.

Looking slightly anxious, she asked in an accusatory voice, "What are you doing here?"

I didn't respond, but the look on my face told her everything she needed to know.

A flicker of guilt flashed across her face. She instinctively reached for my hand. But before she could say anything, someone appeared behind her.

"James? What are you doing here?" Robert's voice rang out.

He made his way over to us and stood next to Celine. The pair looked like a great match.

I stared at them with a complicated expression. I wanted to respond, but I ultimately chose to stay quiet.

When I didn't reply, Robert laughed and took the bouquet of flowers from Celine. "I hope you don't get the wrong idea. I actually asked Celine to get me these flowers. She didn't buy them for me as a gift."

He sounded apologetic, but I could tell that he was actively trying to hide something from me. I frowned. But before I could say something else, I was interrupted once again.

"What are you doing here?" This marked the third time I had been asked that question since I had stepped out of my car.

When I heard my mother-in-law's voice, I turned around in disbelief. Subsequently, I found that she was now walking up from behind me.

"My back was acting up again last night, so I asked my daughter to come over and take care of me. Do you have any problems with that?" asked my mother-in-law, Elizabeth.

Upon hearing this, I had no choice but to suppress my frustration and force a smile onto my face as I answered, "Not at all."

"Robert and I are neighbors. I happened to run into him on my way out. So, I asked Celine to help me deliver something to him. Do you have any issues with that?"

"Not at all…"

I couldn't quite put a finger on it, but the entire exchange felt odd. As far as I could recall, Elizabeth lived in this neighborhood. However, it didn't seem like she stayed in this exact building.

Then again, I seldom visited her after Celine and I got married. So, I could've been mistaken. More importantly, I needed to resolve the current situation between Celine and me.

I didn't want to air out our dirty laundry in public. Hence, I looked toward my wife and said, "Let's go home, Celine."

To my dismay, Elizabeth stepped in.

"You should head back first, James. I need to speak with Celine alone," she claimed.

My instincts told me to say no. However, when I met Elizabeth's firm gaze, I still turned around and left.

After ten minutes of waiting, Celine hurriedly made her way to the parking garage.

"I genuinely couldn't make it yesterday, James. My mother's back injury acted up again," she explained, "But you don't have to worry about it. She's okay now. She—"

Celine abruptly stopped talking. When she saw the look on my face, she fell silent.

"You know that's not what I'm upset about."

"That's enough," I cut Will off sternly. As Ruby clenched her fists, I pulled her behind me and continued, "I'll always be your dad, Will."The certainty in my voice made Will break into a triumphant smile. However, once I completed the rest of my sentence, his expression immediately stiffened."However, I'll never return to you ever again," I declared. Will's eyes widened in shock. He walked toward me in disbelief and reached for my hand."We'll never be able to go back to the way things were." I yanked my hand away from him and tried to leave with Ruby.To my dismay, Celine reached out to grab my arm. "Will and I have been waiting for you to come home, James. "We're a family. As long as we sincerely admit to our wrongdoings, any mistake can be forgiven. Wasn't that what you told us?" she said in an appeasing manner."But we're not a family," I cut her off in a cruel voice. I found her desperate demeanor ridiculous and laughable. I took Ruby's hand and left without so much a

I didn't reply. Instead, I turned off my phone and shut my eyes. I had already arranged for someone to deliver Will's present to him. With Robert keeping him company, he probably didn't need me anymore. Noticing the shift in my mood, Ruby glanced at me nervously and asked, "Are we going to head back, sir?" She looked extremely anxious. She was probably afraid that our relationship would change if we went back. I patted her hand and said in a gentle voice, "No. We're going to a new place and starting a new life there."I continued, "If you want, I can be your dad. From this point onward, you'll be my only child. You can take my last name, and your new name will be Ruby Sawyer." I felt slightly nervous as I waited for her to respond. She held my hand and nodded firmly. "I'd be happy to."After we had arrived overseas, I didn't feel comfortable leaving Ruby at home alone. So, I brought her to work with me. To my surprise, I discovered her remarkable talent for photography.I pa

While I was waiting at the airport, two familiar figures appeared in my way. "I miss you, Dad. Can you please stay?" Will asked, staring up at me with a sad expression. He looked just like he did when he was still a newborn baby. I bent down and gently embraced him. I loved him, but the wound on my leg was still aching faintly. "I have to go." I let go of him. Then, I took a long, lingering look at him before finally turning to leave. Unfortunately, I didn't end up leaving the country. I didn't miss my flight because of Celine and Will; I missed my flight because of that young girl. My friend sent me a text. They claimed that the girl had been hospitalized after she got into a fight. I anxiously rushed to the hospital. When I caught sight of her fragile yet determined figure, my heart ached. This was all my fault—I shouldn't have left her alone. As it turned out, the young girl's name was Ruby Carson, and she was named after a precious gemstone. After the death of her par

I asked Celine to meet me at the coffee shop where we had our first date. Initially, I wanted to convince her to move quickly and amicably with the divorce. But to my dismay, she misunderstood my intentions.Celine and Will were sitting on the other end of the table. Her expression was just as gentle as it used to be. The sight of them looked almost picture-perfect. Unfortunately, Will was still sulking, and he refused to look at me. I glanced at him for a while longer before I finally turned my attention back to the divorce papers on the table. Celine had thoughtfully ordered my favorite coffee in advance. Smiling appeasingly, she pushed the beverage toward me and said, "I was foolish and deluded, James. I still believe that we can go back to the way we used to be." She paused and glanced at the boy next to her. "Besides, Will is only three. I don't want him to grow up in a single-parent household." "Give me custody of him then. I'll give him all the love he needs," I spat co

I walked down the dark street alone. Will was my own flesh and blood. Even if Celine had betrayed me, I believed that he would still choose to be on my side. Unfortunately, it seemed like no one actually cared about me. In hindsight, I had been nothing but a failure. As I was wallowing in self-mockery, I accidentally bumped into another person. "What are you doing here?" the two of us asked simultaneously.I stared at the girl's disheveled appearance and felt slightly puzzled. However, once I noticed the plastic bottle she was holding, I finally understood what was going on. Frowning, I recalled the shabby house she lived in and stared at her thin figure. She looked very young, yet she already bore the weight of life on her shoulders.I couldn't help but feel sorry for her. Life was usually a lot harder on girls, too."It's late. It's not safe for you to be out here by yourself," I instinctively told her.She cut me off and replied, "But you're alone, too. Please make sure t

The next day, after getting everything sorted, I went back to Celine's place. Even though Will hurt my feelings yesterday, he was still my son. As long as he was willing, I'd be more than happy to take him with me.I made my way to Will's room. Before I could open the door, I heard someone speaking inside the room. "What's going to happen to Will after you divorce James? I don't think it's wise for a child to grow up in a single-parent household. "Are you going to look for another partner? Would you like me to be your new dad, Will?"Angered by what I had just heard, I immediately pushed my way in. In the room, Celine and Robert were sitting next to each other. Will, on the other hand, was playing with his toy cars a small distance away. The three of them looked just like a family. "I'm the only father Will will ever have," I declared. "I brought the divorce papers, Celine. I want full custody of our son. I'd like you to sign the papers right now.""You've got the wrong idea
