Chapter 1

Author: Splitting Spring
To climb my way into the upper ranks of the Nostra family, I had built a past out of lies. It was all just to stay inside a world obsessed with bloodlines and loyalty.

The day everything came crashing down, the study reeked of expensive cigars.

Don Lorenzo Nostra eyed me like I was a defective product.

I pressed a razor to my wrist. The veins pulsed faintly under my skin. "Throw me out, and I'll die right here."

He took a slow drag of his cigar and blew a ring of smoke across the room.

"Bene. If you're that desperate to be my wife, I'll give you what you want," he said. "Just don't regret it."

I had earned my title with blood, and it became the running joke of the Nostra family.

After that, his humiliation continued to escalate. He brought different women back to the house. The worst was when he forced me to kneel on the cold marble floor outside his bedroom.

"You'll do anything for status, won't you?" he mocked from behind the door. "Then watch. This is how you please your Don."

That night, the pain in my knees was nothing compared to the chill in my chest. Every sound from that room cut me like a knife.

When he was done, he stepped out and tossed a used rubber at my face. It was sticky and revolting. "You'll endure anything for a title."

He looked at me like I was trash. "Go buy more. Adesso."

I didn't cry or argue. I just left obediently. I even thoughtfully picked out different types for them.

Enduring him was the only way I could survive in his world.

A month later, Lorenzo walked in with a civilian woman named Maria Romano, announcing that she was his new secretary. He ordered me to pick an evening gown for her.

"Sofia," he said, leaving no room for debate. "Bring Madre's sapphire necklace. Give it to Maria."

My stomach sank.

That necklace was Amelia Nostra's treasured heirloom. It was a symbol of power in the family. Other women had coveted it before, but he had never allowed anyone to touch it.

Now, he wanted to hand it to Maria.

Sensing my hesitation, Maria said, "Don Nostra, is your housekeeper always this disobedient? You gave her an order, but she didn't even move."

Her eyes glinted with challenge. She knew exactly who I was.

Lorenzo's face darkened. He slapped me hard enough to make me stagger.

"Are you disobeying me?" he snapped. "Look at yourself, how are you any different from a housekeeper? Move! Do you think you can afford to delay Maria and meet the Consigliere?"

Maria gasped, covering her mouth. "Oh, you're the wife? I'm sorry, I thought you were the housekeeper. Your clothes… I didn't recognize you."

I glanced down. House clothes and an apron. She wasn't wrong.

"Really, Don Nostra? Making your wife run errands for me?" she said. "I'm just a secretary. Look, her face is all swollen. She'll be angry at you."

Lorenzo laughed. "Her? Angry? A woman who lied her way in and threatened to kill herself to stay doesn't get to feel anger."

He gripped my jaw and squeezed until my eyes stung. "Isn't that right, Sofia?"

But this time, he was wrong.

I pulled out the divorce papers I had kept hidden for years and steadily declared, "Don Nostra, we're done."

Five years were up. I had finally fulfilled the promise I had made to the dead.

I froze. I had never imagined that he hadn't signed the divorce agreement."Why didn't you sign it? Weren't you the one who couldn't wait to get rid of me? I've already kept the promise I made to Donna Nostra. What we had should've ended a long time ago."Lorenzo shook his head violently. "I don't want that! Why do you all think you can decide my life for me? Now that I finally know the truth, you want to leave? Sofia, what do you take me for? I won't sign it! You're my wife! You can only be mine!"After that, Lorenzo started camping outside my hotel. Every time I stepped outside, he clung to me.Riccardo pulled me into his arms. "I'll take care of it. I'll end this once and for all.""Let me talk to him. Don't worry, I can handle it," I reassured, pushing him away gently. When he heard that I was willing to meet him, Lorenzo's face lit up with hope. "Sofia, I knew you still cared about me! I don't mind whatever happened between you and Riccardo. If you just come back to me, we c

Lorenzo searched every room in the villa, but I was nowhere to be found. I had signed my name on it and hadn't asked for a single thing from him. I left everything behind.Lorenzo's fingers trembled. Panic rose in his chest like a flood. For the first time, he realized I might truly be done with him.He immediately tried calling me, but my phone was already turned off.Maria, who had followed him inside, saw the divorce papers and couldn't hide her smile. "I told you Mrs. Nostra and Don Alessi were seeing each other. Look, she didn't hesitate to divorce you. Clearly, she's found someone better."Lorenzo said nothing.Maria leaned her head against his chest. "You never liked her anyway. So what if she left? Now you don't have to be angry at her anymore. And we can finally be together openly. I'll take ca

Matteo had fallen for Donna Nostra the moment he first met her. Unfortunately, her heart had already belonged to someone else.He buried that feeling deep inside and stayed by her side in silence, never marrying for the rest of his life. After Donna Nostra passed away, he treated Lorenzo like his own son, guiding and supporting him through everything.Unlike Lorenzo's father, who only cared about his own affairs, Matteo was the one who truly acted like a father figure to Lorenzo. He trusted and respected him more than anyone.Lorenzo staggered, guilt written all over his face. "So you're really telling the truth? I misunderstood Sofia? She never wronged me. Instead, I was the one who had hurt her all these years…"Matteo sighed and patted Lorenzo's shoulder."Your Madre knew your pride too well. If she told you that she arranged this marriage, you would've rejected it immediately. That's why she kept it from you. "She thought that once you two spent enough time together, feelin

I sighed. "He was your Madre's most trusted Consigliere. Even if you don't believe me, you should at least believe him."Maybe it was the seriousness in my expression—something he had never seen from me before—but Lorenzo's eyes flickered with doubt. He stared at me in disbelief. "I don't believe you," he said. "I'm going to find Consigliere Luciani right now and get the truth out of him. I'll tear off that mask of yours with my own hands."With that, he staggered off.Maria shot me a venomous glare before rushing after him.By the time they reached Matteo Luciani's estate, Lorenzo still refused to believe a single word I had said. All he wanted was for Matteo to confirm that I was a liar.He was just about to open the door when he heard a voice drifting from inside the garden. Matteo was standing among the peonies, speaking softly to himself."Rest assured, Donna Nostra. Lorenzo can stand on his own now. It seems your decision back then was right. Sofia really is talented. I was an orphan.Back then, I had been working part-time to pay for design school when I collapsed from exhaustion on the street. Because of her, I achieved my dream and even won several international awards. However, I never imagined that right after graduation, Donna Nostra would come to me with a request. She said she admired my resilience. Her son, Lorenzo, had grown up spoiled inside the family. He was arrogant and untouchable. She feared that once she passed, his temper would make him lose his place in the family.Faced with the woman who saved me, I couldn't say no.Donna Nostra told me Lorenzo wasn't bad at heart. Lorenzo froze. His fury faltered, leaving him looking almost ridiculous. "What… What are you talking about?"Maria immediately jumped in. Her voice was sharp and shrill as she tried to sway the crowd. "Mrs. Nostra! I know you don't want people finding out how you deceived the Don, but you can't just shift the blame onto someone who's no longer alive to defend herself!"Donna Nostra was loyal to the Nostras beyond measure. How dare you smear a dead woman's name?"Her words snapped Lorenzo out of his shock. Disbelief darkened into disgust. "Sofia! I thought your lies were shameless enough, but it turns out you can sink even lower. That was my Madre! Why would she ever help an outsider like you lie to her own son?""Her own son?" I scoffed. It was time I let this sheltered don see the truth he had been blind to. "That's exactly why she lied to you."His fury spiked, but uneasiness flickered in his eyes. "What the hell are you implying? Why would Madre do any of that?""It's because
